J. Ellen Asplen
DUNDALK - Josephine Ellen Bowie Richardson Asplen, 59, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002 at the Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care in Baltimore. She was the manager of Baltimore County's Re-employment Assistance Center.
Born Aug. 2, 1943 in Baltimore, Mrs. Asplen was the daughter of Antoinette Belt Eggen Richardson and Philip Stevens Richardson of Hurlock. She was the sister of the late Col. Philip Stevens Richardson Jr. of Gloucester, Va. and the late Jon Blake Richardson of Hurlock.
Mrs. Asplen grew up in Hurlock and attended Stuart Hall in Staunton, Va. She graduated from Goucher College in 1963 with a bachelor's degree in political science and married George Herbert Asplen an engineer from Church Creek on June 26, 1965. When Mr. Asplen began working at Bethlehem Steel Corp. at Sparrow Point in 1966 the Asplens moved to Dundalk, where they made their home.
As a young mother, Mrs. Asplen was an active volunteer in numerous local organizations. She served on the Board of Directors for the Baltimore County League of Women Voters and on the Baltimore County Charter Revision Commission. She was also a member of the Dundalk Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, the Inner Wheel of the Dundalk Rotary Club, the Dundalk Concert Association, the Heritage Association in Dundalk, and the Woman's Club of Dundalk.
Mrs. Asplen devoted her career to public service, working first for the federal government at Fort Holabird, then moving to county government, where she had served in management positions at the county Office of Employment and Training for 22 years. In 1993, she developed the first Baltimore County Outplacement Assistance Center for 250 laid-off Baltimore County employees. After its success, Mrs. Asplen designed a full-service center to serve dislocated workers in the county. The Re-employment Assistance Center opened in Towson in 1994, and Mrs. Asplen had managed it since its inception.
Mrs. Asplen remained active in civic, church and political activities throughout her life. Among other contributions, she had served as the chairperson of the Service Providers Agency Network, a member of the Board of Directors of the Human Resource Development Agency and a vestryman and Sunday school superintendent for St. George's and St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Dundalk.
Mrs. Asplen is survived by her husband, George, who recently retired from Bethlehem Steel Corp.; her son, George Blake Asplen; her daughter, Jennifer Ellen Bowie Asplen Corrigan; two grandchildren; and other family members. George Blake Asplen, an account executive for First Indiana Bank, lives in Baltimore with his wife, Kristin Tull Asplen, and their daughter, Caroline Leigh Asplen. Jennifer Corrigan, an assistant to the associate head of school at Collegiate School, lives in Richmond with her husband, Scott Corrigan, and their son, Cole Blake Corrigan.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Old Trinity Episcopal Church in Church Creek with the Rev. Jansen String officiating. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Sunday at St. George's and St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Dundalk.

Charles W. Stanley
TRAPPE - Charles William Stanley, 91, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002 at the House of the Pines in Easton.
He was born May 11, 1912 in Baltimore, the son of the late Lottie Stanley and Samuel Young.
He attended the public schools in Baltimore. Later in life he moved to Trappe and made his home there. "Charlie" as family and friends called him, held various jobs in the area. He retired as a farmer on the Kennedy farm after many years of service.
Upon retirement he moved to the Bradford House in Cambridge and lived there until his health failed. The Kennedys supported him during this time. Because of his health, Mr. Stanley was moved to The House of the Pines in Easton until his death.
Mr. Stanley is survived by a sister, Thelma Russell at the House of the Pines, Easton; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Rachel Rozier, Mary E. Brown and Arnita Purnell; and one brother, George Stanley.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. today at the Henry Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge. Burial will follow in Paradise Cemetery, Trappe.
There will be a viewing one hour prior to the service.

Jean S. Wooten
CAMBRIDGE - Jean S. Wooten, 74, passed away Friday, Sept. 27, 2002 at the Mallard Bay Care Center after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Wooten was born Sept. 14, 1928 in Trevorton, Pa., the daughter of the late Cloyd Chalmers and Florence Miller Crissinger.
She had graduated from Trevorton High School in 1946 and had also attended Eastern Pilgrim College. On June 6, 1953 she was married to the Rev. D. J. Wooten. They have made their home in Cambridge for many years, where Mrs. Wooten had helped her husband with his ministries at a number of churches and also as a school teacher.
Mrs. Wooten was a member of the Bay Country Bible Church in Cambridge.
She had been in failing health for several years, and had been a patient at the care center for two weeks.
In addition to her husband of 49 years, Mrs. Wooten is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, the Rev. David J. Wooten and Diane Wooten, Dennis J. Wooten and Robin Wooten, Donald J. Wooten and Lanie Wooten and the Rev. Douglas J. Wooten and Roberta Wooten, all of Cambridge. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Jordan Wooten, Dylan Wooten, Brooke Wooten, Jessica Wooten, Devon Wooten, Becca Wooten, Faith Wooten, Jared Wooten and Jonathan Wooten; three sisters, Pauline Lahr and Evelyn Brown of Trevorton, Pa., Lois Shankweiler of Allentown, Pa. and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kimberly Wooten; one sister, Naomi Crissinger; one brother, James Crissinger and four brothers-in-law, Willard Brown, Henry Lahr, Harold Berrien and Harry Shankweiler.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Open Bible Church in Cambridge with the Rev. D. J. Wooten, the Rev. David J. Wooten and the Rev. Douglas J. Wooten officiating. Burial will follow at the Bucktown United Methodist Churchyard. The family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m. Wednesday.
Pallbearers will be Randy Stauffer, Doug Stauffer, Duane Stauffer, Dr. Joe Cacioppo, Jordan Wooten, Dylan Wooten, Brian Taylor and Charlie Murry. Honorary bearers will be Warren Kibe, Chuck Foxwell and the men of the Bay Country Bible Church.

Amara Ca'zhai Smith
CAMBRIDGE - Amara Ca'zhai Smith, infant daughter of Yolanda Nicole Smith and Alonza Manokey Jr., died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
Besides her parents, she is survived by a brother, Ayonbre' Manokey; her grandparents, Phyllis Smith and Oliver Freeman of Cambridge, Virgil Elliott of Hurlock, and Moneil Dockins of Cambridge; great-grandparents, Pearl Smith and Zenno Smith, both of Ridgely, Emerson Elliott Sr. of Federalsburg and Emma Elliott of Hurlock; aunts, Mikesha Smith and Kasy Johnson of Ridgely, Lynisha Smith of Cambridge, Makia Manokey of Dover, Del., Chanere Christian and Mia Dockins of Cambridge; and an uncle, Corey Warner of Ridgely.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Alonza Manokey Sr.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bethel Cemetery in Cambridge. Arrangements are being handled by the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home in Federalsburg.
Minnie S. Dennis
CAMBRIDGE - Minnie Stanley Dennis, 93, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002 at her home.
She was born Jan. 22, 1909 in the community of Taylors Island, daughter of the late William Webster and Fannie Stanley.
Mrs. Dennis was educated in Dorchester County. When she was a youngster she worked as a domestic. She later moved to Cambridge and worked for the largest store in Cambridge, Harrington and Bailey. In later years she became a homemaker. She became a good cook, which she really loved.
She married Ashton Dennis. Then Mrs. Dennis opened a restaurant on the corner of Pine and Muir streets.
As time went on she was employed by the Dorchester County Board of Education as cafeteria manager at Mace's Lane Middle School. She worked 31 1/2 years without missing a day.
Mrs. Dennis was a dedicated member of Bethel AME Church officiating as president of the Trustee Aides for 37 years and president of the Tribe of Levi. She was also a member of the Emergency Board, Usher Board, the Missionary Society, Sunshine Club and Homecoming Committee. Mrs. Dennis cooked in the kitchen for various affairs - the Poor Man's Supper and the Friends and Family Day being her favorite. She was well known for her rolls and cinnamon buns.
Mrs. Dennis was also president of the Carnation Club, a member of the Dorchester County Retired Educator's Association, Elks Lodge 223, Seafood, Apple and Strawberry Festival.
Her survivors include a son, Joseph Stanley and a daughter, Diane Wilson, both of Cambridge; seven grandchildren: Joseph Stanley Jr. of East New Market, Linda Chester of Glen Burnie, Troy, Natasha, Nicole and Bridgette Wilson, all of Cambridge, Monique Wilson of Essex and a daughter-in-law, Avonderine Stanley. She is also survived by three nephews, Donald Stanley and Raymond Hooper, both of Baltimore, Herbert Hooper of Cambridge; 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, two special friends, Gloria Bailey and her No. 1 daughter, Barbara Jones, both of Cambridge.
Mrs. Wilson was preceded in death by four sisters, Sarah Bell, Margie Cole, Lena Bell and Elsie Hooper and a brother, Oliver Stanley.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bethel AME Church with the Rev. Leon B. Hall Sr. officiating. Burial will follow at Lane's Cemetery at Taylors Island.
There will be a viewing from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Calvin E. Bolden
FEDERALSBURG - Calvin Edgar Bolden, 67, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at his home on Brooklyn Avenue.
Born April 23, 1935, he was the son of the late Elmer Lee Bolden Sr. and Alice Cannon Bolden. When he was 17, he went to work for Ellis Concrete in Federalsburg. He worked as a truck driver, delivering cement blocks and steps for the next 42 years.
He is survived by his wife, Daisy Stanley Bolden; three daughters, Calvileen Bolden, Verna Bolden and Gloria Greene, all of Federalsburg; one son, Donnie Bolden of Federalsburg; two sisters-in-law that he raised, Delores Greene of Preston and Lolita Stanley of Seaford, Del.; a brother-in-law that he raised, Marvin Santanna of Philadelphia; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Wallace Bolden of Federalsburg and Elmer Lee Bolden Jr. of Washington, D.C.; one sister, Martha Mae Carr of Baltmore; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law that he raised, Thomas Stanley; a sister, Shirley Mae Bolden; and three brothers, Corinthian Bolden, Sylvester Bolden and Leon Bolden.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Zion United Methodist Church in Federalsburg. The Rev. Dr. Vanessa Stephens Lee will officiate. BUrial will follow at Federal Hill Cemetery.

Raymond T. Applegarth Jr.
METAIRIE, La. - Raymond Thurston Applegarth Jr., 83, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at his home.
Born in Cambridge, the son of the late Raymond T. Applegarth, he had lived in Metairie for the past 51 years. He attended Western Maryland College in Westminster and was the assistant director of Vieux Carre Commission for three years. He was a retired architect. Mr. Applegarth served as a major in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was a member of the American Institute of Architects, Sons of the American Revolution, Military Order of Foreign Wars, Jefferson Genealogy Society, Jefferson Historical Society and Maryland Upper Shore Genealogy Society.
He is survived by his wife, June Ryan Applegarth; two sons, Bruce Ryan and Raymond Thurston Applegarth III; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Lena Mae Applegarth.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Joseph Bennett Applegarth.
A funeral service was held at L.A. Muhleisen & Son Funeral Home in Metairie. Burial was held at Garden of Memories Cemetery.
James C. Hackett
HURLOCK - James Carol Hackett, 76, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at Memorial Hospital at Easton.
Born Dec. 24, 1925, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Benjamin Hooper Hackett and Stella Bender Hackett. A 1942 graduate of Federalsburg High School, he as a linotype operator at the Federalsburg Times and J.W. Stoles Printing Co. for 42 years, retiring in 1982. After retirement from the printing industry, he worked at the power plant in Vienna as a security guard for 12 years, retiring from that position in 1999. He enjoyed crossword puzzles and collecting antique metal die cast cars.
He was a member of the Union Church of Federalsburg and a past member of Federalsburg VFW Post 5246 and Hurlock American Legion Post 243.
He is survived by one daughter, Brenda H. Bell and husband, Bunky, of Vienna; one son, Kevin Carroll Hackett and wife of Easton; three grandchildren, Lori A. Bradley and husband Dwaine of Vienna, Kevin C. Hackett II of Easton and Kelley Marie Hackett of Easton; one great-granddaughter, Taylor M. Bradley of Vienna; one brother, Harry Hackett of Federalsburg; one sister, Betty Anthony of Federalsburg; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Louise Hackett; one brother, George Hackett; and one sister, Mary Beth LeCates.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market. The Rev. Mary Ann Farnell will officiate. Burial will follow at East New Market Cemetery.

Dorothy S. Hall
CAMBRIDGE - Dorothy S. Hall, 73, passed away Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at Dorchester General Hospital, where she had been admitted on Wednesday.
Born Sept. 22, 1929 in Hudson, she was the daughter of the late Walter Bryan and Bertie Ellen Hubbard Spedden. She attended schools in Hudson and Cambridge, graduating from Cambridge High School in 1946. She worked for the Dorchester County Board of Education for 34 years, retiring in 1983.
She was a 50-year member of Grace United Methodist Church and had been the church historian for a number of years. She also taught Sunday school. She was a docent of the Dorchester Arts Center and a member of the Dorchester General Hospital Auxiliary.
She is survived by two daughters, Kathy S. Brooks and husband, William, of Cambridge, and Amy S. Meekins and husband, Richard, also of Cambridge; three grandchildren, Matthew Meekins, Patrick Brooks and Susannah Brooks; two sisters, Mildred Seward and Mary Frances Warfield, both of Hudson; two brothers, the Rev. Harold P. Spedden of Ocean Pines and Maurice F. Spedden of Chester; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Grace United Methodist Church. The Rev. Douglas M. Ridley will officiate. Burial will follow at Spedden Seward Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be William W. Brooks, Richard W. Meekins, the Rev. Harold P. Spedden, Maurice F. Spedden, Warren McWilliams and John Warfield.
The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service Sunday.

Maggie Thomas
CAMBRIDGE - Maggie Thomas, 91, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at Dorchester General Hospital.
Born April 10, 1911, in Aireys, she was the daughter of the late William and Rosie Dutton Thompson. She worked as a domestic worker for private residences in the Dorchester County area for a number of years. She had been a resident of Chesapeake Woods Nursing Center since September 2001.
Mrs. Thomas was a member of the Church of God in Prophecy in Hurlock.
She was survived by five Children, Melvin Thomas, Virginia Sherwood and Mary Louise Thomas, all of Cambridge, Sherwood Thomas of Happy Camp, Calif., and John Thomas of Capital Heights, Md.
She was preceded in death by four children, Alonzo Thomas, Emma Thomas, Joshua Thomas Jr. and Lillian Thomas.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Henry Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Bucktown Cemetery.

Estella K. Ennels
CAMBRIDGE - Estella Olive Margaret Keene Ennels, 91, passed away Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton.
She was born Dec. 19, 1910 at Lina's Road, the daughter of the late Harry P. Keene Sr. and Aurilla Banks Keene.
Mrs. Ennels was the last remaining sibling of 17; the last eldest female from Lina's Road and the eldest member of the Christ Rock community.
As a child, she attended and joined John Wesley United Methodist Church in Lina's Road. She received her formal education in the local schools of Dorchester County.
In 1929 she moved to Christ Rock with her late husband, Roy Elmer Ennels, and their infant daughter, the late Aurilla Ennels Locust.
Mrs. Ennels became a member of Christ Rock United Methodist Church and served in the following capacities: President and Treasurer of the United Methodist Women and its predecessor organizations; Sunday School teacher and Superintendent; Communion Stewardess; and a member of the Usher Board. She also served on the Christ Rock Cemetery Committee.
Her mothering skills extended beyond her immediate family to include an "adopted" daughter, Etta Nelson McNamara. Mrs. Ennels did domestic work, factory work and retired as a Board of Education employee having served as cafeteria manager at Mace's Lane High School.
She volunteered at the Cambridge Maryland Hospital Gift Shop and the Robin Hood Shop. She also distributed The Upper Room and served as a contact person for homebound elderly citizens of Dorchester County for the MAC Center. She was the organizer in her community of the Neighborhood Watch.
Mrs. Ennels was the recipient of former President William J. Clinton's Longevity Award, the MAC Multi-Service Senior Center of Dorchester County Award, Mace's Lane High School Alumnae Association's Recognition Award and the Christ Rock United Methodist Women's Special Recognition Award.
Her survivors include: five daughters, Barbara E. Lake, Hattie E. Green, Edna E. Thornton, Gloria E. McLean and Estella Sylvia E. Jones; a son, Jerome Michael Ennels; grandchildren - Ellen Bronte' and Benito DePriest Lake Jr., Lisa Marie Thornton Angelety and James Andre' Thornton, Stephanie Michelle Green Fitzhugh and Vaughn Edwin Jones; great-grandchildren - Lea Simone, Rodney David II, Darius Matthew and Chelsea Vaughn Jones, Lauren Marie Angelety and Allaina Michelle Fitzhugh. She is also survived by sons-in-law - Fred Locust, Benito Lake Sr., Clifton Green, James H. Thornton, Jerome J. McLean, Paul D. Jones; nephews - Ivy Ennels Sr., Andrew "Buddy" Ennels, George M. LeCompte, Tyrone Chester; nieces - Ada Ennels Briscoe, Florence (Susie) Ennels; great-nephews - Edward (Eddie), Tyrone, Kenneth and Jerome Ennels; great-niece, Mary Ennels Elliott and many cousins, among who are Mildred O. Dean Henry, Ruby Banks Kane, Roberta Travers Foster and Edward Dean and other relatives.
Preceding her in death, besides her parents and husband, were 16 siblings; her lat husband's 13 siblings; one grandson, Rodney David Jones and a cousin, the eldest in her lineage, Roxie Phillips Dredden.
A funeral service will be held noon Saturday at Bethel AME Church in Cambridge with the Rev. Turhan Potter officiating. Burial will follow in the Christ Rock Cemetery.
A viewing will be held 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday at the church.

Norma L. Gray
LAUREL, Del. - Norma Lee Spedden Gray, 61, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002 at her home in Laurel.
She was born in Cambridge, daughter of James William "Speddie" Spedden and Wilsie Willey Spedden of Cambridge.
Mrs. Gray worked for the North Laurel School as a teacher's aide. She was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church in Bethel, Del. and was a volunteer at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford.
Mrs. Gray was a member of the Seaford Moose Lodge and the Martha Rebekah Lodge 21 in Laurel.
Besides her parents, Mrs. Gray's survivors include her husband, Wayne E. Gray of Laurel, Del.; a son and daughter-in-law, Wayne E. Gray Jr. and Tammy of Seaford; two brothers, Donald Spedden of Cambridge and James Spedden of Secretary; a sister, Joyce Slacum of East New Market; two grandchildren, Shelton James Gray and Thomas Wayne Gray and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. today at the Bethel UM Church in Bethel, Del. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery. Friends will be received from noon to 1 p.m. today at the church.
