Leon G. Slacum
SEAFORD, Del. - Leon "Buck" Gorman, Slacum, 81, died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002 at the Seaford Genesis Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born Dec. 3, 1920, the son of the late Gorman Goldsborough Slacum and Grace Hopkins Moore Slacum.
He was a graduate of Federalsburg High School, class of 1938. Mr. Slacum served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II in the South Pacific serving as Flight Officer for the 19th Bombardment Squadron flying B29 bombers.
Mr. Slacum retired as fire marshal on Jan. 19, 1983 from the E. I. Dupont Co. in Seaford after 43 years of service. After his retirement he fulfilled his dream to grow flowers and vegetables in his garden.
He was a member of Bethel UM Church where he sang in the choir and served for many years as chairman of its Board of Trustees. He was a member of Nanticoke Masonic Lodge 172, A.F. & A.M.; a life member of Federalsburg Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5246 and was presently serving as president of the Del-Mar-Va Beagle Club.
Mr. Slacum is survived by his wife of 33 years, Lucy Cohee Slacum, whom he married Dec. 15, 1969; a son, William L. Slacum of Dothan, Ala.; a stepson, Jon Dyer of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; a brother, Eugene Slacum of Dover, Del. and two sisters, Rose Wheatley of Seaford and Emily Johnson of Bridgeville, Del. He is also survived by an aunt, Lillian Baird of Bridgeville, Del. and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William Slacum and a sister, Doris May Slacum.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethel Um Church, Harper Road near Federalsburg with the Rev. Diane Melson officiating. Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 1:45 p.m. by members of VFW Post 5246.
Serving as pallbearers will be Barry Johnson, Mark Johnson, Tim Mills, Donald McWilliams, Junior Mills, Kenneth Fishell, Bill O'Day, Donald Robinson and Bobby Patterson.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Bethel Community House Inc., c/o Pauline Callaway, 20857 Callaway Road, Bridgeville, DE 19933.

Mildred O. Johnson
CAMBRIDGE - Mildred O. Johnson, 81, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002 at the Mallard Bay Care Center.
She was born April 4, 1921 in Woolford, the daughter of the late S. Richard Johnson and Bertie L. Newcomb Johnson Larrimore.
Ms. Johnson worked for many years at the J.C. Penney Store in Cambridge. After moving from Linkwood to Oxford she worked for many years at the Robert Morris Inn.
She is survived by her sister, Peggy J. Colburn and a half sister, Judy Dawson, both of Cambridge and several nieces and nephews: Sen. Richard Colburn, Marie Colburn, Billy Dawson, Greg Dawson, Wayne Dawson, Ray Dawson, Cheri Tubman, Sue Cusick and Lisa Slacum.
Besides her parents, Ms. Johnson was preceded in death by a sister, Rosalie Slacum; a brother, William Johnson and a half sister, Edna Robbins.
Funeral services will be held privately.

Mary M. Stevenson
CAMBRIDGE - Mary Madgaline Stevenson, 67, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Phil Carr on Washington Street.
She was born Dec. 30, 1934 in Edenton, N.C., the daughter of the late Christopher Eugene and Effie Hoffler.
She attended the public schools in Pitt County and later in life moved to Cambridge.
Mrs. Stevenson is survived by a daughter, Linda Faye Carr of Cambridge; four sons, Ricky, Samuel and Raymond Stevenson, all of Cambridge and Christopher Stevenson of Hampden, Conn.; a son-in-law, Phil Carr of Cambridge; four daughters-in-law, Druscilla Greene, LaTania and Edna Stevenson, all of Cambridge and Brenda Stevenson of Hampden, Conn; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Evelyn Wilkins and a brother-in-law, Kenneth Wilkins, both of Preston; a stepsister, Beulah May Shaw of Elizabeth City, N.C.; four nephews; four nieces and a number of other relatives including a special cousin, Ethel Hardy of New Haven, Conn.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clevern Earl Stevenson Sr.; a son, Clevern Earl Stevenson Jr. and a grandson, Ricky Eugene (Skitter) Carter.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Henry Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge. Burial will follow in the Bethel Cemetery.
There will be a viewing one hour prior to the service.
James F. Patchett Jr.
FEDERALSBURG - James F. Patchett Jr., 83, passed away Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002 at the Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, in Seaford, Del.
He was born in Preston, the son of the late James Franklin Patchett and Mary Ward Patchett.
Mr. Patchett graduated from Preston High School, class of 1935. He attended Goldey Beacom College. He enlisted in the United States Navy and served during World War II.
Mr. Patchett was a master plumber for his family business, J. Frank Patchett and Son.
He was a member of the VFW Post 5246 of Federalsburg and the American Legion Post 243 in Hurlock. He was a past member of the Preston Volunteer Fire Company and Ducks Unlimited.
Mr. Patchett is survived by his wife of 52 years, Josephine Johnson Patchett; three daughters, Penny P. Bunting of Greenwood, Joanne P. Simmons and her husband, David of Havre de Grace, Joanne D. Patchett of Preston; seven grandchildren: Troy Williams, Laura Rogala, Daniel Patchett, Bain Bunting, T. J. Bunting, Clark Andrews III, Chad Andrews; four great-grandchildren, Grant Williams, Emilee Patchett, Olivia Patchett, Alison Patchett; a sister, Dorothy "Dot" Lee King of Woodstock, Ga.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, James F. Patchett III and two sisters, Bette Wilson and Jean Auer.

Dorothy G. Windsor
EASTON - Dorothy G. "Dot" Windsor, 77, of Cambridge, passed away at the Memorial Hospital in Easton on Friday morning, Oct. 4, 2002. She was the wife of the late Matthew M. "Bucky" Windsor and had been hospitalized since Aug. 15.
She was born in Baltimore on Jan. 17, 1925, the daughter of the late Thornie Clay and Margaret Burton Phillips. She was raised and attended public schools in Baltimore and Cambridge.
She married Mr. Windsor on Dec. 18, 1954 and always enjoyed sewing and cooking. Mrs. Windsor worked at the Rob Roy Co. and served as a shop steward for the garment workers' union. She later worked at the Commander Garment Co. Mr. Windsor passed away on Aug. 8, 1993.
Mrs. Windsor is survived by two daughters, Dottie C. Abbott and Alice Tente, both of Cambridge; one son, Charles K. Orem III of Marathon, Fla.; three grandchildren, Randi Lowe, Charles K. Orem IV, and Tiffani Abbott; one great-grandchild, Colby Christopher; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a great-grandchild, Ciera Raye Abbott; one sister, Virginia Hummer; and two brothers, Thornie C. Phillips Jr. and Preston L. "Bunny" Phillips.
A funeral service will be conducted at the Thomas Funeral Home today at 1 p.m. by the Rev. William K. George. Burial will follow in East New Market Cemetery.

Henry M. Shenton
CAMBRIDGE - Henry M. Shenton, 94, of Cambridge, passed away early Saturday morning, Oct. 5, 2002 at the Mallard Bay Care Center. He had resided at the local nursing home for the past two years.
He was born at Taylors Island on Feb. 8, 1908, the son of the late Anthony W. and Cornelia Geoghegan Shenton. He was raised at Taylors Island and was a 1927 graduate of Cambridge High School.
At that time he moved to Baltimore and on Nov. 26, 1930 married the former Helen Kunkel. As a young man he worked at Montgomery Ward as a department manager and attended Johns Hopkins University at night.
He later worked at Bethlehem Steel Shipbuilding Co. for 37 years, retiring as an industrial engineer. Upon retirement, the Shentons moved to Cambridge.
Since living in Cambridge, they were both active in Zion United Methodist Church and Mr. Shenton was active in the Men's Bible Class.
For many years, Mr. Shenton was a mason. He was a member of Cambridge Lodge 66 A.F.& A.M. and formerly held membership in Hiram Lodge 107 in Baltimore. He was also a member of Baltimore Forest 47, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Sparrows Point Anchor Club, Dundalk Square Club and Middle River Square Club.
Mrs. Shenton passed away on March 11, 1998.
Mr. Shenton is survived by one daughter, Carole H. Smith and her husband Jimmy of Cambridge; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Martina Asplen; and three brothers, Anthony W. Shenton Jr., Alton S. Shenton and a twin, Harvey Shenton.
Officers and members of Cambridge Lodge 66 will conduct a Masonic memorial service at the Thomas Funeral Home today at 3:30 p.m., immediately followed by a funeral service which will be conducted by the Rev. Dale L. Vroman and the Rev. Delmer Willey Jr.
Friends will be received by his family at the funeral home during the hour before the services. Burial will take place in Parkwood Cemetery in Baltimore at a later time. Memorials may be made to the Endowment Fund of Zion U.M. Church, 612 Locust St., Cambridge MD 21613.
Bobby T. Wheatley
CAMBRIDGE - Bobby T. Wheatley, 68, of Cambridge, passed away at his home on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002 after a lengthy illness. Mr. Wheatley was a long-time employee of the Cambridge Wire Cloth Co. and the husband of the former Ernestine Adams.
A funeral service will be conducted at the Thomas Funeral Home on Tuesday afternoon by the Rev. Pardee Bramble. Friends will be received at the funeral home during the hour before the service. Burial will take place in Dorchester Memorial Park.

Betty Phillips
SALISBURY - Betty Phillips, formerly of Fishing Creek, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002 at the Deer's Head Center in Salisbury. She was the wife of the late Charles G. Phillips.

Martin R. Kennard
CAMBRIDGE - Martin R. Kennard, 92, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002 at the Chesapeake Woods Center.
He was born June 3, 1910 in Baltimore, the son of the late Raymond C. Kennard Sr. and Lola V. Boykin Kennard.
On June 3, 1935 he married the former Jessie W. Andrews. She died on Feb. 21, 1986.
Mr. Kennard was an accountant and a professional singer. He was a frequent singing guest on the Jerry Lewis Telethons.
Mr. Kennard was a life member of the Masonic Lodge and the Tall Cedars of Lebanon No. 139, College Park. He was also a member of the Silver Spring Volunteer Fire Department, Hyattsville.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Cambridge.
Surviving is a sister, Jo Redmer; a brother and sister-in-law, Gordon and Dolores Kennard, both of Baltimore; two local sisters-in-law, Elsie Andrews Booze, Maysie Mister Todd; nieces and nephews, Arthur Todd, Wayne Todd, Phyllis Cook, Gordon Kennard Jr., David Stephen Kennard, Jill Noreen Holtschneider, Albie Redmer, Gregg Redmer; several great-nieces and great-nephews and friends, Louise Wilberger, Pat Adams and Jack Berge.
Preceding him in death, besides his parents and wife, was a daughter, June A. Kennard; three sisters, Norma Bauer, Lee Basil, Betty Jane Kennard and a brother, Raymond Kennard Jr.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A. where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Officiating at the service will be the Rev. Douglas Ridley. Burial will follow at Crapo Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery, Crapo.
Pallbearers will be Henry Cook, Arthur Todd, Wayne Todd, Dale Cook, Paul Basil and Albie Redmer. Honorary pallbearers will be Gordon Kennard, Jo Redmer and Pat Adams.

RICHMOND, Va. - Gerald Lee Holliday died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002 of a boating accident.

Keith L. Phillips
CAMBRIDGE - Keith L. Phillips, 42, of Cambridge, passed away suddenly on Tuesday morning, Oct. 15, 2002 at the Emergency Room of Dorchester General Hospital.
He was born in Baltimore on Oct. 18, 1959, the son of Leroy T. and Loretta Muller Phillips. Being raised in a military family, he attended public schools in Clovis, N.M., Mansfield, Ohio, and Dorchester County.
He was an avid fan of NASCAR and the San Francisco Forty Niners. He had worked in construction and home improvement for most of his life and was currently working with Riverside Home Improvements.
He is survived by two daughters, Megan Airey of Cambridge, and Amanda Phillips of Laurel, Del.; one son, Keja Phillips of Laurel; one grandson, Christian Berman of Cambridge; his parents of Cambridge; three sisters, Connie Folderauer and her husband Mark of Baltimore, Sherry Collins and her husband Calvin of Federalsburg, and Ruth Engle of Cambridge; one brother, Andy Phillips and his friend Sheila Peddicord of Cambridge; and a half-brother, Yancy Gatheright and his wife Sherry of Fort Towson, Okla. Also surviving are two aunts, Nancy Corkran and Patricia Maddox; two uncles, Vernon W. Phillips and Marvin L. Phillips; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted at the Thomas Funeral Home on Friday at 1 p.m., by the Rev. Dale L. Brown, pastor of St. Paul's U.M. Church. Burial will take place in East New Market Cemetery.

Hammond W. McAllen
EAST NEW MARKET - Hammond Webster McAllen, 82, of East New Market, died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Richardson McAllen of East New Market; one daughter, Lynn M. Nossick of Secretary; one son, Malcolm W. McAllen of Preston; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Marjorie Arnett of Clearwater, Fla.
One son, Richard M. McAllen, preceded him in death.

MANTEO, N.C. - Howard M. Simmons, formerly of Hurlock, died today in Manteo, N.C. He was 73.

Robert W. Collins
EAST NEW MARKET - Robert William Collins, 76, died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, at Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge.
Born Aug. 26, 1926, he was the son of the late Thomas Henry Collins and Olga Caroline Gertz Collins.
He is survived by three sons, Richard Collins, David Collins and Paul Collins; one daughter, Janet Collins; one sister, Alva Era; and one brother, Charles "Buddy" Collins.
He was preceded in death by one son, Bobby W. Collins Jr.
Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Good Counsel Cemetery in Secretary.
A viewing will be held 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Zeller Funeral Home in East New Market. A prayer service will be held at 8 p.m.
Bertha M. Conway
SEAFORD, Del. - Bertha Mitchell Conway, 106, formerly of Dorchester County, passed away Monday, Oct. 14, 2002.
Born in Hicksburg on June 6, 1896, she was the daughter of the late James and Martina Jackson Mitchell. She worked in the poultry industry and would inform young people that she never earned $1 an hour in her life.
Mrs. Conway was a member of John Wesley Church in Seaford. She was the oldest and last survivor of her brothers and sisters, having lived during three centuries.
She married the late Samuel Conway, with whom she had four daughters, all deceased.
She is survived by her grandchildren and two sons-in-law.
Funeral services will be held noon Saturday at United Deliverance Bible Center in Laurel, Del. Burial will be held in Seaford.
Iona Whittington
CAMBRIDGE - Iona Whittington, 99, passed away Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at Mallard Bay Care Center. She was born July 9, 1903.
She is survived by two nieces, Elsie E. Churchwell and Ella Mae Downs; and one nephew, Leon Askins.
Arrangements are being handled by Boardley Funeral Home.
Howard M. Simmons
MANTEO, N.C. - Howard M. Simmons, 73, passed away Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 16, 2002, at Outer Banks Memorial Hospital in Nag's Head, N.C.
Born on Hooper Island on Jan. 10, 1929, he was the son of the late Clinton R. Simmons and the late Elizabeth "Libby" Aaron Simmons. He attended schools in Fishing Creek and Cambridge.
After World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1946-48. He served in the U.S. Army from 1948-54. He worked as a painter for most of his life and had worked with Richard Dietrich for several years.
He had lived in Hurlock, but made his home in Manteo during the past three years. He had been in failing health for the past year.
He is survived by two daughters, JoAnn S. Wyatt and husband, C. Leroy, of Hurlock and Teresa Cosden of Easton; a companion, Betty Lou Middleton of Manteo, N.C.; one sister, Joan S. Adams of Trappe; one brother, Clinton M. Simmons of Easton; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Nancy Lee Dillon and Mary Lou Ward.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge. Burial will follow at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery near Hurlock.
The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service.
