Ernestine N. Jones
DURHAM, N.C. - Ernestine Newsome Jones died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002 at her home in here.
Mrs. Jones was born June 28, 1919 daughter of the late Mamie Petree Newsome and Ernest Andrew Newsome. Following her father's death, she moved to Durham, N.C. with her mother and stepfather, the late Ray H. Wilson. Upon graduation from Durham High School, she attended the Women's College in Greensboro, N.C. and graduated with honors from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During the second World War, Mrs. Jones married her husband, the late Julian Mace Jones, while he was stationed at Camp Butner. Her married life was spent in Cambridge, where she exhibited prize-winning iris and began her teaching career at the Academy School.
Returning to Durham, she taught at the former Durham City Schools of Holloway Street, Southside, Carr Jr. High, and Durham High. Mrs. Jones will be remembered for her classes in Senior English, Advanced Composition, and Black Studies, as well as being the advisor to the Folk Music Club, the PARNASSIAN literary magazine, and the MESSENGER yearbook at Durham High. During her career as an educator, she inspired her students with a love of literature, art, music and travel.
She is survived by her daughter, Carol Jones Barnes; her son-in-law, Billy Barnes; her grandson, Preston Sterling Barnes; her nephew, John Robert Newsome Jr.; family friends, Laure Argiri and David Terry; and her many former students.
Friends will be received at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home 7-9 p.m. Friday. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Maplewood Cemetery.
Flowers are accepted, or memorials may be made in Mrs. Jones' name to Hospice at The Meadowlands, 1001 Corporate Drive, Hillsborough, N.C. 27278.

Harold Jones
CAMBRIDGE - Harold Jones, 80, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002 at the Dorchester General Hospital.
He was born June 1, 2002 in Dorchester County, son of the late Benjamin Sampson Sr. and Martina Virginia Jones.
Mr. Jones was educated in the public schools of Dorchester County. Upon his retirement from Easton Memorial Hospital in 1987, he continued his employment with The Dorchester Developmental Unit for specialized training for several years.
Mr. Jones was a member of Union Chapel AME Church.
He is survived by three sons, Frederick Jones and Gregory Candy (Sherita), all of Cambridge and Keith Hubbard of Federalsburg; two adopted sons, Charles Neal Jr. of Cambridge and Willie Candy of Harrisburg, Pa.; four daughters, Barbara McKnight, Constance Elliott (Frederick) and Francine Harris (Everett) all of Cambridge and Claretha Nichols (Darcy) of Hurlock; and two adopted daughters, Katherine McSwain (Lewis) of Atlanta, Ga. and Lottie Neal of Delmar. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Esther Wilson (Leroy) and Mary L. Pinder, both of Cambridge and Bessie Stewart (Eugene) of Fort Washington; three brothers, Arthur Sampson (Rosalee), Joe Sampson (Doretha) and Rufus Sampson (Arlette) all of Cambridge; a special cousin that was like a sister to him, Doris Cain of East New Market and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mr. Jones was preceded in death by three daughters, Alfrieda Demby, Vandora Jones and Thelma Jones; one son, Harold Jones Jr.; five brothers, Emerson Sampson, Johnny Sampson, Benjamin Sampson Jr., Elwood Sampson and Wilbur Sampson Sr.; one grandson, Kevin Demby and three great-grandchildren, Harold Williams, Humberto Maltez Jr. and Shania Maltez.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Bethel AME Church in Cambridge. Burial will be in the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery, Eastern Shore at Beulah.
A viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Bennie Smith Funeral Home in Cambridge.
Seth J. Potter Sr.
EASTON - Seth J. Potter Sr., 47 died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002.
He was born May 4, 1955 in Easton, the son of the late Virgie and William Potter.
Mr. Potter attended the Talbot County Public Schools and had been employed at the Bay Street Laboratories and later at the Annapolis Paint Co. before becoming ill.
He is survived by six sisters: Valerie Potter, Rowena Potter, Sonya Potter Lewis and Yolanda Potter of Easton, Lynne Potter Blake of Leesville, La. and Linda Cornish of Cambridge; three brothers: Roger Potter and Herbert Potter of Easton and Hilbert Potter of Louisville, Ky. He is also survived by three sons, Monte Banks of Easton, Seth Potter Jr. and Jamal P otter of Philadelphia; a daughter, Shontia Potter of Philadelphia and a special friend, Joyce Banks of Easton; two grandchildren; one brother-in-law; one sister-in-law and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Union Baptist Church in Easton. There will be a viewing from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Bennie Smith Funeral Home and from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at the church.
Reginald E. Thomas Jr.
CAMBRIDGE - Reginald E. "Rabbit" Thomas Jr., 69, passed away on Saturday morning, Nov. 2, 2002 at the emergency room of Dorchester General Hospital. Mr. Thomas had been in failing health for several months.
He was born July 12, 1933 in Cambridge, the son of the late Reginald Edwin and Eulah Shorter Thomas. He was raised in Cambridge and was a 1952 graduate of Cambridge High School.
Mr. Thomas retired from Cambridge International in June of 1998 after 46 years of service there. He was a member of the Elliott United Methodist Church. He enjoyed doing things for his church and he loved animals.
Mr. Thomas is survived by his wife, the former Diana Insley, to whom he was married on Oct. 31, 1961; two sons, Reginald E. Thomas III and his wife, Patricia and John C. Thomas, both of Cambridge; two aunts, Louise Pinder of Queenstown and Mildred Wagner of Cambridge and one uncle, James O. Thomas of Cambridge.
A funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Elliott United Methodist Church by the Rev. Mary Ann Farnell. Burial will take place in Dorchester Memorial Park. Friends will be received by his family at the church during the hour before the service.

William E. Jarrell Jr.
CAMBRIDGE - William E. Jarrell Jr., 84, passed away early Sunday morning, Nov. 3, 2002 at Dorchester General Hospital. He was the husband of the former Naomi Duncan.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Thomas Funeral Home with the Rev. Dale L. Vroman officiating. Burial will take place in the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery, Eastern Shore at Beulah. Friends will be received at the funeral home during the hour before the service.

Roy W. Rouse
HURLOCK - Roy W. Rouse, 41, died at his home near Hurlock on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002.
He was born Oct. 30, 1961 in Easton, the son of Eleanor M. Lambe Rouse of Federalsburg and the late John "Jack" Rouse.
Mr. Rouse was a graduate of North Caroline High School's Class of 1979. He worked on building construction over his life being employed for Ken Burns, J. R. Smith and also Willow Construction.
For many years he played in the pool league in Denton. He was a former member of the Moose Lodge near Greensboro.
He was engaged to be married to Kimberly Wanex of Hurlock.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Rouse is survived by a daughter, Courtney Amber Rouse of Baltimore; two sisters, Sandra Bilbrough of Secretary and Mary Sellers of Denton; a brother, John L. Rouse of Salisbury and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by two brothers, J. Robin Rouse and Donald W. Rouse.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home in Federalsburg. Burial will take place in Greensboro Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. and also on Thursday from noon to 1 p.m.
Blanche R. Richardson
CAMBRIDGE - Blanche Ruth Keene Richardson, 82, formerly of Princess Anne, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002 at Dorchester General Hospital.
She was born March 9, 1920 in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of the late Robert E. Swaney and Alice Burns Swaney. A late husband, George A. Keene Jr., passed away in 1984.
Mrs. Richardson had worked as a seamstress at the former Gant Shirt Factory in Salisbury. She was a member of Unit 91, American Legion Auxiliary in Cambridge, the Women of the Moose 654 in Salisbury, and member of the VFW in Salisbury. Mrs. Richardson was a former member and past unit president of O. T. Beauchamp 95, American Legion Auxiliary and a past district president of the southeastern shore district of the American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband, Bill Richardson of Cambridge; a daughter and son-in-law, Gwen and George "Snooky" Walston Jr. of Princess Anne; a son and daughter-in-law, George A. and Bobby Keene of Princess Anne; a son and daughter-in-law, Leroy and Sandy Brunke of Newton Falls, Ohio; a son, William C. Brunke of Salisbury; stepchildren, Terry Willis, Jennifer Lindner, Jamie Richardson and William Richardson, all of Cambridge. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Robert Brunke, Lisa Jones, Denise Allen, Timmy Brunke, Lisa Brunke, Robert Brunke, Charles Brunke, Tammy Brunke, Kenny Walson, Mike Keene and Chris Keene; four great-grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Mary Sherman of Tarpon Springs, Fla.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Hinman Funeral Home in Princess Anne, where friends may call tonight from 7 to 9. The Rev. Olivia Costango will be officiating. Burial will be held in Beechwood Cemetery in Princess Anne.

Pauline P. Hastings
FEDERALSBURG - Pauline "Polly" Virginia Powell Hastings, 84, passed away Saturday afternoon, Nov. 2, 2002 at her daughter's home.
She was born May 18, 1918 in Frederick, the only daughter of the late Raymond Erickson Powell and Myrtle House Powell Bear and stepdaughter of the late John Worthington Bear.
She was raised in Frederick and was Valedictorian of her graduating class of Frederick High School, Class of 1935.
Following her graduation she moved to Baltimore and worked for the University of Maryland Dental School and met Ernest F. Hastings and they were married on Feb. 1, 1944. She and her new family moved to Federalsburg in 1948. "Polly" as she was best known and her husband Ernest "Fiddler" Hastings owned and operated Hastings Food Market in Federalsburg for many years. He died on April 8, 2002.
Mrs. Hastings was a member of Christ United Methodist Church and the Philethea Circle of the church. Ina ddition her memberships include the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 5246 and the former Nanticoke Chapter 62 Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by a daughter, Brenda Walker and her husband, Jim of Federalsburg; two sons, Frank Hastings and his wife, Gail of Delmar, Md. and Gary Hastings and his wife, Georgia of Newtown, Pa.; six grandchildren, Brad Hastings of Easton, Matt Hastings of Delmar, Jaime Walker of Baltimore, Janna Walker of Federalsburg, Jeffrey Hastings of Newtown, Pa., and Jeni Hastings of Newtown, Pa. She is also survived by a brother, Richard Powell of Hagerstown; a caregiver, Elaine Phillips and a close friend, Ann Wyatt, both of Federalsburg.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Roy Powell, Donald Powell and Jack Powell.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday at the Williamson Funeal Home in Federalsburg with the Rev. Glenn Lyburn and the Rev. David Heistand officiating. Burial will take place at Hillcrest Cemetery in Federalsburg.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Katherine M. Nichols
PRESTON - Katherine Marie Adams Nichols, 84, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002 at the Shore Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Denton.
She was born June 9, 1918 in Harmony, the daughter of the late John Adams and Lottie Stanford Adams. Her husband, Floyd L. Nichols preceded her in death.
Mrs. Nichols was a graduate of Lockerman High School, Class of 1938. She started working at Phillips Packing House in Cambridge and later worked for John Wright's Cannery, Bumble Bee Tuna Co. and Caroline Poultry. She later performed Home Health Services in Caroline County and even housed patients in her own home for personal care.
She is survived by one daughter, Jean Adams Brummell and her husband, Fred Brummell Sr. of Denton; one brother, Lewis H. Adams of Denton; four grandchildren; Fred Brummell Jr. (Bernette), Derick Brummell (Yvonne), Shelton Brummell, Kevin Brummell (Cynthia); four great-grandchildren, Orlando, Kevin, Sierra, Derick Jr. and a number of nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by five sisters, Mary, Alverta, Alice, Louise, Lucy and four brothers, Howard, Harvey, Edward and Leonard.
Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Ross Chapel near Denton with the Rev. Randolph Fitchett Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Federal Hill Cemetery in Federalsburg. Friends may call at the church from 6-8 p.m. Friday.

Kenneth Leaper
PRINCESS ANNE - Kenneth Leaper, 91, of Cambridge, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002 at the Manokin Manor Nursing Home.

Leona W. Nave
TRAPPE - Leona Warden Nave, 94, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002 at her home after a lengthy illness. She was the wife of the late Isaac M. Nave.
She was born Jan. 6, 1908 in Laurel Bloomery, Tenn., the youngest of nine children to the late Irving Jackson and Elizabeth Graybeal Warden. She attended the public schools in Laurel Bloomery and was a 1926 graduate of Mountain City High School.
On Dec. 17, 1927 she married Mr. Nave in Bristol, Va. and in 1937 the Naves moved to Dorchester County. Since 1949 they had resided in Trappe. Mr. Nave passed away on March 4, 1989.
Mrs. Nave was known in garden club circles as an accomplished gardener, raising and exhibiting orchids, roses and many unusual flowers in her garden and greenhouse. She was also well known for the quality and the quantity of her fruits, vegetables and nuts. She was a life member of the Dorchester Garden Club and Minerva Chapter 50, Order of Eastern Star.
Mrs. Nave is survived by two daughters, Sara N. "Sally" Blizzard and her husband, Charles A. Blizzard IV of Trappe and Cora Sue Cheves and her husband, Allen of Jackson, Ga.; two sons, Jackson M. Nave and his wife, Faye Hurley Nave and Julian H. Nave and his wife, Dorothy Beckwith Nave, both of Trappe; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Cora, Mary Belle, Margaret and Myrtle and four brothers, Arthur, Luther, Ted and Earl.
Her family is honoring her request that there be no funeral service or memorial service. Burial will be private at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Easton.

Ruth M. Sterling
PRESTON - Ruth Marie Sterling, 81, passed away Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at William Hill Manor in Easton.
Born in Boston on March 5, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Anne Greene Hagen. She worked for years at Harris Seafood in Kent Narrow before joining the Queen Anne's County Department of Social Services and Upper Shore Aging prior to her retirement nine years ago.
She attended Chapel of the Holy Child Roman Catholic Church in Bethlehem.
She is survived by two sons, William Carroll Sterling and Donald Joseph Sterling of Preston; one sister, Gertrude McMellon of Hartford, Conn.; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll Wesley Sterling, who passed away in 1981; one son, Richard Sterling, who passed away Feb. 16, 2001; and one brother and one sister.
A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. today at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery at Beulah.
Iona B. Whittington
CAMBRIDGE - Iona Bromwell Whittington, 99, passed away Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at Mallard Bay Care Center.
Born July 9, 1903, in Old Field, she was the daughter of Joseph Bromwell and Sophia Jolley Bromwell. She was education in the Dorchester County Public School System. In her younger years, she did seasonal work in canning factories and babysat for Mr. and Mrs. Stack, who were neighbors and friends.
She resided on Pine Street for many years. Then in failing health, she resided with niece Elsie Churchwell, who was her caretaker. She had resided at Mallard Bay for the past two years. Mrs. Whittington was a member of Zion Baptist Church, which she attended faithfully until her health failed.
She was married to William Opher for many years until he passed away. In later years, she married James Whittington, with whom she was united until his death.
She is survived by five nieces, Ella Mae Downs, Valerie Woods, Savannah Askins, Elsie Churchwell and Daphine Mitchell; one nephew, Leon Askins; 37 great-nieces and great-nephews; 63 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews, and several great-great-great nieces and great-great-great nephews.
Besides her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Alice Askins and Maggie Waters; two brothers, Joseph Bromwell and Leon Bromwell; two nieces, Marzella Elliott and Eva Burton; and two nephews, Clifton Askins and George Askins.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Bethel AME Church. The Rev. Henry Carswell will officiate. Burial will follow at Bethel Cemetery.
Members of the family will serve as pallbearers.
Friends may join the family 7 to 8 tonight at the Boardley Funeral Home, 812 Hubbard St. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service Tuesday.
Roy C. Nichols
OAKLAND, Calif. - Bishop Roy Calvin Nichols, 84, passed away Oct. 9, 2002.
Born in Hurlock on March 19, 1918, he was the son of the late Mamie V. Nichols and Roy C. Nichols. His family moved to Philadelphia, where his mother passed away when he was 5. His family then lived with Lulu and Percy Williams, who helped raise him and his sisters.
He attended Central High School in Philadelphia, afterward enrolling at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, using scholarship funding and money he saved from jobs in Philadelphia and Atlantic City, N.J. He received a bachelor's degree in philosophy and economics. He then moved to California to attend the Pacific School of Religion, where he received his divinity degree.
At age 8, he joined the First African Baptist Church in Philadelphia, where he was baptized. After receiving his divinity degree, he became the founding co-pastor of the South Berkeley Community Church in Berkeley, Calif., in 1943. After several years, he founded Downs Memorial United Methodist Church in Oakland, where he remained for 15 years. Under his leadership, the Downs sanctuary was constructed, and the church's congregation grew to 800.
In 1964, he became pastor at Salem United Methodist Church in Harlem, N.Y., where he ministered for about four years, during which time the church built a multipurpose center. He was elected the first African-American bishop of the United Methodist Church in 1968. He served as bishop of the Pittsburgh area for 12 years. In 1980, he was assigned as bishop of the New York area, where he served until retiring in 1984.
After his retirement, he became bishop emeritus of the New York and Pittsburgh areas, bishop in residence at Downs Memorial Methodist Church and pastor emeritus at Salem United Methodist Church. During that period, he worked as a consultant, preacher and lecturer. Most recently, he served as interim pastor of the Church by the Side of the Road in Oakland.
While in Berkeley and Oakland, he championed community issues. He was elected to the Berkeley School Board, where he served as president, and participated in a weekly Sunday evening radio program, "The Christian Answer," on KRE as a radio preacher from 1950 to 1964.
As a bishop, he served as president of the Council of Bishops, president of the New York City Council of Church Executives, a member of the World Council of Churches' executive and central committee, president of the United Methodist Church's global division and a guest preacher on CBS television's "Protestant Hour."
During his years in the ministry, Bishop Nichols authored articles and three books, "Footsteps in the Sea," "Greening of the Gospel" and "Doing the Gospel." He received several honors, including having a $500,000 chair of education established by the Pittsburgh area in his and his wife's name at Africa University. The Downs Community Development Committee of Downs Church established a senior housing complex and community center in his name. He also received several honorary degrees.
In 1944, he met and married Ruth Richardson, a podiatrist practicing in the San Francisco area.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Melisande Schwartzfarb and husband, Martin, and Allegra Lewis and husband, Robert; one son, Nathan Nichols and wife, Diane; seven grandchildren, Joy and husband Kevin, Debra Schwartzfarb, Neil Schwartzfarb and wife Jodie, Roberto Lewis, Marcos Lewis, Xavier Lewis and Kim Nichols; two sisters, Evelyn Spencer and Evangeline Baker; one nephew, Gregory and wife Norene; four great-nieces and nephews, Nakida, Rasii, Roniche and LaTrelle; and several friends and relatives.
He was preceded in death by one nephew, Ronald Baker.
A funeral service was held Oct. 17 at Downs Memorial United Methodist Church. The Rev. Kelvin Sauls and Bishop Beverly J. Shamana officiated. Burial was held at Rolling Hills Memorial Park in Richmond, Calif.
Active pallbearers included Jim Taylor, Marcos Lewis, Kevin Young, Roberto Lewis, Xavier Lewis and Neil Schwartzfarb. Honorary pallbearers included Frank Earvin, Dr. Garfield Bryant, Wesley Jones, the Rev. Wilbur Johnson, James Johnson, the Rev. Milton Combs, Clarence Kyle, George Faulks, Judge Gordon Baranco and the Rev. Donald Fellers.
Delia M. Bangert
CAMBRIDGE - Delia M. Bangert, 91, passed away Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at Chesapeake Woods Center, where she had been a patient since Aug. 4.
Born in Bishops Head on Dec. 19, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Riley and Santa Anna Todd Hughes. She attended schools in Dorchester County. She had worked in Dr. Albert Bunker's office.
Mrs. Bangert volunteered with the Robin Hood Shop, Salvation Army and Lutheran Mission Society. She had made her home at the Bradford House for several years.
In 1939, she married John Bangert, who passed away Aug. 4, 1965. For more than 20 years, she was a companion to Joseph "Dutch" Thomas, who passed away several years ago.
She is survived by 10 grandchildren, Harry Mowbray of Magnolia, Del., Albert Mowbray of Washington state, Wanda Mowbray of Cambridge, Patsy Mitchell of Dover, Del., Charles Rosetta of California, Steve Mowbray of Cambridge, John Mowbray of Illinois, Sandra Rosetta of Florida and Sharon Tyler and Brenda Busta of Cambridge; several great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Elizabeth Mowbray and Juanita Niblett; one son, Melvin Willey; and four grandsons, Wayne Rosetta, Norman Mowbray, Earl Meekins and Jackie Willey.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Thomas Funeral Home. The Rev. David Wooten will officiate.
The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service.
