MILTON L. CROWE
Milton Lee Crowe, 68, Cumberland, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999, at his home.
Born June 19, 1931, at New Germany, he was a son of the late Samuel Webster Crowe and Melva Leora (Broadwater) Crowe. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Hubert Crowe, Owen Crowe, and Archie Crowe.
He was a member of the Bedford Road Baptist Church. He retired after 34 years of service from the Cumberland Coca-Cola Bottling Company, where he was a warehouse manager. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving as a sergeant in the Engineer Corps. He was a member of the NRA, a life member of DAV, a lifetime member of the North American Hunting Club, and the Fort Hill Rifle and Pistol Club.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Sandra Lee (Twigg) Crowe; one daughter, Shelly Lee Cox, Newark, Del.; two sons, Danny Lee Crowe, Middletown, Del., and Deane Lee Crowe, Cumberland; five grandchildren; and three sisters, Diona Broadwater, Avilton, Arlene Morris, New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and Helen Broadwater, Salisbury, Pa.
Friends will be received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Hwy., LaVale, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, Thursday. A service will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Friday, Nov. 5, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Joseph DiNicola officiating. Interment will follow in the New Germany Methodist Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded at the cemetery.
ALTA H. FOWLER
Alta Harriet Fowler, 80, Relay, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at St. Agnes Hospital.
Born July 6, 1919, in Zion, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Harry Brock and Harriet Louise (Enlow) Fredrickson. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Elwood Harry Fredrickson.
She was a descendant of John Friend Jr., James McMullen, Robinson T. Savage, and John Enlow, all pioneer settlers of Garrett County, and was a great-great-niece of the late Meschach Browning.
She was a former employee of Westinghouse Corp., where she worked as a computer chip QA technician. She was a member of the Halethorpe-Relay United Methodist Church, Halethorpe.
Survivors include her husband, Richard Louis Fowler Sr.; one brother, Clair Enlow Fredrickson, Staten Island, N.Y.; two sons, Richard L. Fowler Jr., Miami, Fla., and Jeffrey Harry Fowler, Relay; one daughter, Audrey Alta Fowler, Relay; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the MacNabb Funeral Home, Catonsville. A service will be conducted at the Halethorpe-Relay United Methodist Church on Friday, Nov. 5, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Claire Fiedler officiating. Interment will follow in Meadowridge Memorial Park Cemetery, Dorsey.
SHIRLEY M. ZIMMERMAN
Shirley Mae (Reckart) Zimmerman, 64, Millersville, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at the University of Maryland Hospital.
Born Oct. 19, 1935, in Cuzzart, W.Va., she was a daughter of Rena E. (Strawser) Reckart and the late Daniel H. Reckart. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ronald Zimmerman; one son, Robbie Zimmerman; one daughter, Crystal; and one sister, Nancy Metheny.
She was retired from the Westinghouse Corporation.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by one daughter, Rebecca Leatherman; three brothers, Donnie Reckart, Delbert Reckart, and Rodney Reckart; four sisters, Lucille Strauss of Georgia, and Nelda Koch, Florence Friend, and Susan Harris, all of Maryland; and three granddaughters.
Friends were received at the McCully Funeral Home, Brooklyn, and the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland. A service was conducted at the Crellin Assembly of God Church on Wednesday, Nov. 3. Interment was in Garrett County Memorial Gardens.
MARY M. MARPLE
Mary Magnolia (Metcalfe) Marple, 89, Oakland, formerly of Beryl and Piedmont, W.Va., died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born April 21, 1910, in Sulpher City, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Jesse and Elizabeth (Poling) Metcalfe. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Melvin T. 'Pappy' Marple; a twin daughter, Kathleen Marple; two sons, Terry Marple and James Marple; four sisters, Isabelle Keller, Marie Tranum, Libby Crawford, and Virginia Whisner; and two brothers, Fitzugh Metcalfe and one in infancy.
She was a charter member of the Piedmont Church of God.
Survivors include five daughters, Doris Welch, Oakland, Vera Whisner, Piedmont, Joy Fester, Keyser, W.Va., Maxine Shugars, New Comerstown, Ohio, and Darlene Smiley, Swanton; two sons, Kenneth Marple, Gorman, and Leon Marple, Bloomington; 20 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport. A service was conducted Wednesday, Nov. 3, at the Piedmont Church of God, with the Rev. Bill Trenum and the Rev. Ada Kittle officiating. Interment was in Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
LEONA HART-WISE
Leona (Nicklow) Hart-Wise, 90, Baltimore, formerly of Friendsville and Oakland, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999.
Born May 1, 1909, in Accident, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Matilda Nicklow. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, James E. Hart, in 1964; her second husband, Raymond A. Wise, in 1972; and three brothers, Clark Nicklow, Walter Nicklow, and Coit Nicklow.
She was a 1928 graduate of the Frostburg State Normal School. She taught elementary school in Garrett County for 14 years, starting in a one-room schoolhouse near Friendsville. She and her late husband moved to Baltimore in 1942, where she taught an additional 13 years at St. Bernard School.
She was actively involved in community activities, including The Chimes, St. Elizabeth School of Special Education, B.A.R.C., St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary, St. Vincent’s auxiliary, and others. She attended Blessed Sacrament Church since 1942.
Surviving are three sons, James E. Hart, Thomas J. Hart, and Richard C. Hart, all of Baltimore; one daughter, Patricia S. Hart, Baltimore; four sisters, Catherine Mitchell and Eleanor Fearer, both of Oakland, Alta Schlosnagle, Friendsville, and Louise Seggie, Arizona; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; four stepchildren; and four step-grandchildren.
A Mass will be said in her honor at Blessed Sacrament Church, Baltimore, on Sunday, Nov. 7, at 9 a.m.
The family suggests memorials take the form of contributions to The Chimes, 4815 Seton Drive, Baltimore, MD 21215.
BARRY L. SCHROCK
Barry L. Schrock, 52, Salisbury, Pa., was killed in a single-vehicle accident Tuesday night, July 27 on Route 219, north of Route 40, near Grantsville, Maryland.
Born Nov. 27, 1946, in Meyersdale, the son of Glenn E. and Mary (Wagner) Schrock, Salisbury.
He was a self-employed carpenter and a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Salisbury. He served for six years in the Pennsylvania National Guard, was a member of the Salisbury American Legion, and was an associate member of the Salisbury VFW.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by five aunts, Jane Barnhart, Salisbury, Annabelle Christner, Finzel, Janet Scott, Friedens, Pa., Pauline May, Greenville, Pa., and Patty Glessner, Bowie.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday. A service will be conducted at St. John’s Church of Christ, Salisbury, on Saturday, July 31, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Raymond Brown officiating. Interment will follow in the Salisbury Cemetery.
Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to St. John’s United Church of Christ.
HOWARD V. SISLER
Howard Vaughan Sisler, 28, Oakland, was fatally injured in an accident on Route 135 at 3:45 a.m. Friday, July 23.
Born Oct. 21, 1970, in Oakland, a son of David V. and Wanda L. (Friend) Sisler, Friendsville.
He was a construction worker for Willard Industries, Frederick.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one daughter, Faith D. Sisler, Crellin; two sons, Vaughn A. Sisler, Friendsville, and Tyler A. Sisler, Deer Park; two sisters, Debria Fearer, Friendsville, and Meliscia Bowman, Oakland; one brother, Nathen Sisler, Friendsville; his paternal grandfather, Otis Sisler, Friendsville; his paternal step-grandmother, June Sisler, Friendsville; his maternal grandmother, Glenna Roth, Oakland; and his fianceé, Laura Flynn, Oakland.
Friends were received at the Stewart Funeral Home. A service was conducted at the Friendsville United Pentecostal Church on Monday, July 26, with the Rev. Joe Smith officiating. Interment was in the Blooming Rose Cemetery, Friendsville.
CLAUDE D. LEE
Claude David Lee, 87, Oakland, died Monday, July 26, 1999, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born Sept. 29, 1911, in Eglon, W.Va., he was a son of the late Grover R. and Alma (Fike) Lee. He was also preceded in death by two wives, Anna P. (Lewis) Lee and Ruth (Snyder) Lee.
He was a retired steelworker.
Survivors include four sons, Jerry Lee, Tulsa, Okla., Carl Lee, Broken Arrow, Okla., and Darwain Lee and Dale Lee, both of Terra Alta, W.Va.; one stepson, Mark Snyder, Accident; five daughters, Delores Stemple, Aurora, W.Va., Regina Crowell, Waynesboro, Tenn., Nancy Wright, Waynesburg, Pa., Lois Wills, Halifax, Va., and Carol Lumpkin, Jacksonville, N.C.; one brother, Gerald Lee, Joshua Tree, Calif.; and numerous grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, where a service was conducted earlier today, July 29, with the Rev. William Connelly officiating. Interment was in the Maplewood Cemetery, Kingwood, W.Va.
DANIELLE N. HESSICK
Danielle N. Hessick, 16, Cape Charles, Va., died Sunday, July 25, 1999, at the Norfolk (Va.) General Hospital, from injuries she sustained in a boating accident on the Chesapeake Bay.
Born May 17, 1983, in Tiffin, Ohio, she was a daughter of William Bloomfield, Portsmouth, Ohio, and Gina L. (Kitzmiller) Hessick Downes, Cape Charles.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her stepfather, Joe Downes Jr.; step-parents, Kenneth W. and Joanna Hessick, Newport News, Va.; three sisters, Kendra Hessick, Cape Charles, Sherie Strickland, Pensacola, Fla., and Virginia Downes, Urbanna, Va.; two brothers, Wayne Hessick, Cape Charles, and Taylor Hessick, Newport News; four sets of grandparents, Richard 'Dick' and Dorcas Kitzmiller, Oakland, Richard and Barbara Winters, Waldorf, Robert and Eileen Hessick, Green Springs, Ohio, and Merril and Wilma Ginnever, Bellevue, Ohio; and a maternal great-grandmother, Gertrude (Uphold) Kitzmiller, Oakland.
A graveside service was conducted at the Oakland Cemetery earlier today, July 29, with the Rev. Michael Mudge officiating.

BARBARA J. METHENY
Barbara Joan 'Bobbi' Metheny, 61, Terra Alta, W.Va., died Thursday, July 22, 1999, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born Nov. 26, 1937, in Terra Alta, she was a daughter of the late Frank Goss and Virginia Blanche Kisner Wilhelm. She was also preceded in death by two brothers and six sisters.
She was Baptist by faith. She retired after 21 years from Bausch & Lomb, then provided in-home care for a local physician’s children and numerous elderly individuals in the community.
Survivors include two brothers, Frank F. Wilhelm, Pittsburgh, and Dennis B. Wilhelm, Terra Alta; and two sisters, Patricia A. Bailey, Morgantown, W.Va., and Shirley P. Roy, Oakland.
Friends were received at the Arthur H. Wright Funeral Home, Terra Alta, where a service was conducted Saturday, July 24, with the Rev. Harry Hebenthal officiating. Interment was in the Terra Alta Cemetery.
