Dorsey L. Bankard
SPRINGDALE - Dorsey L. Bankard, 72, passed away at his home Saturday afternoon Oct. 19, 2002, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Fishing Creek on March 16, 1930, he was the son of the late George and Nellie Lewis Bankard. He was raised and attended public schools in Fishing Creek and was proud that his family descended from Barren Island.
As a young man, he served in the Maryland National Guard for five years and for most of his life worked as a commercial waterman. He later worked at Connelly Containers as a machine operator.
He was a social member of Choptank Memorial Post 7460 VFW and had attended St. Paul's United Methodist Church. He loved animals.
He is survived by his wife, the former Esther Bierly Clay Bankard; two daughters, Betty Jane Papson of Towson and Deborah Bankard of Cambridge; two sons, Richard Bankard of Cambridge and Steven Bankard of Salisbury; two stepdaughters, Diana Clay Jackson of Cambridge and Susan Clay Hutson of Chester; one stepson, Richard E. Clay of Springdale; five grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Ann Insley of Hurlock; four brothers, George Elliott of Cambridge, Mike Elliott of Easton, Michael Allen Elliott of New York and Albert "Sonny" Brown of Easton; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers.
A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Old Trinity Churchyard. The Rev. Dale L. Brown will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Richard E. Clay, Andrew E. Clay, G. Philip Jackson Jr., Paul M. Jackson, Raymond Mitchell and Curtis Bloodsworth.
There will be no calling hours.

Lauton Banks Jr.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Lauton Banks Jr., 64, formerly of Church Creek, passed away Friday, Nov. 15, 2002 at the Veterans' Hospital in Sacramento.
He was born March 27, 1938, son of Jennie Banks Travers and the late Lauton Banks Sr. of Church Creek.
Mr. Banks attended the public schools of Dorchester County and graduated from Mace's Lane High School in 1956. After graduating he worked at Dayton's Restaurant before going into the service.
He served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years, retiring as a Tech Sergeant on May 1, 1981.
He leaves a horse named "Mockey" who he enjoyed entering in horse shows and who won many ribbons and awards. He loved going camping and fishing.
Besides his mother, Mr. Banks' survivors include his wife, Yolanda Banks of California; brothers - Rudolph Sr., Melvin Banks of Cambridge, Alexander Travers Sr. (Bridgett) of Salem, Jerome Travers Sr. (Crystal) of East New Market; sisters - Burnadine Elbert of Cambridge, Eleanor Jackson of Cordtown, Brenda Cephas (George) of Cambridge, Vernetter Pinder (Tyrone) and Alexzenia Davis (Claudell) of Linkwood; great-aunt, Frances Gilbert and a great uncle, Orems Conaway of Cambridge and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his father, Mr. Banks was preceded in death by a stepfather, Alexander Travers Sr.; grandparents, Robert Stanley and Hilda Stanley Wheatley, Eugene and Eleanor Banks; stepgrandfather, Allen Wheatley; a baby sister, Gaynol; and an aunt, Lillian Shockley.
There will be a memorial service held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Christ United Methodist Church in Aireys with the Rev. Keith Cornish officiating.
Earl E. Lewis
RIDGELY - Earl E. "Sleepy" Lewis, 80, passed away Monday, Nov. 18, 2002 at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.
He was born Aug. 17, 1922 in Hooper Island, the son of the late Julian and Bessie Lewis.
After attending Dorchester County Public Schools he joined the United States Navy in 1941, during which time he served on the SS Winston-Salem, a Merchant Marine ship that was torpedoed in the North Atlantic. After his release from active duty in 1946 he attended the Maryland State Police Academy and from 1951 to 1967 he was assigned to the Salisbury Barrack in Worcester County.
Mr. Lewis enjoyed flying and in 1964 earned his pilot's license.
He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Greensboro.
He is survived by his wife, the former, Patricia A. Hughes, whom he married June 14, 1978; two children, Thomas E. Lewis of Rehoboth Beach, Del. and Ann H. Yowell of Petaluma, Calif.; one sister, Peggy Layton of Delmar, Del.; three grandchildren, Logan Lewis, Ryan Yowell and Drew Yowell and a special friend, Dee Anne Blades.
Funeral services will be held noon Friday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Greensboro where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery, Eastern Shore at Beulah.

Rosalee W. Lauck
SECRETARY - Rosalee W. Lauck, 86, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002 at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.
She was born Nov. 21, 1915 in Secretary the daughter of the late Thomas Willoughby and Ida Mae Saunders Willoughby.
Mrs. Lauck was a member of St. Luke's Church in Secretary.
She is survived by six sons - James Wayne Lauck of Secretary, Chester L. Lauck of Cambridge, Michael A. Lauck of Secretary, Robert Lee Lauck of Hurlock, William H. Lauck of Secretary, J. W. "Mickey" Lauck Jr. of Greenwood, Del.; four daughters - Patsy Coppage of Secretary, Helen Tyler of East New Market, Lily L. Brittingham of East New Market, Edith Finck of Secretary; 25 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James W. "Mike" Lauck Sr., who died April 21, 1986; two brothers, Norman Willoughby and Howard Willoughby; two sisters, Helen Koski and Ruth Willoughby.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Luke's Church in Secretary with the Rev. Glenn A. Staehli and the Rev. John Mishler officiating. Burial will follow in East New Market Cemetery. Friends will be received by the family during the hour preceding the services from noon to 1 p.m. at the church.
Pallbearers will be Hank Lauck, Dale Lauck, Donald Lauck, Shane Brittingham, Chris Era and James Moore.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jeff Lauck, Timmy Mostrom, Jim Marshall, Aaron Robbins and Ronnie Lauck.

Rose V. Sparks
CHESTERTOWN - Rose Virginia Sparks, 85, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002 at Harbour Home Assisted Living Center.
She was born Feb. 15, 1917 in Kent County, the eldest of four children of the late J. Edgar Sr. and Hester Jane Strong.
Mrs. Sparks attended the Union Memorial School of Nursing in Baltimore, graduating with the class of 1937. During her professional career she practiced Public Health Nursing in Queen Anne and Kent counties and worked in the maternity ward at Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital in Chestertown. There she was able to assist in delivering six of her seven grandchildren. Upon her retirement she was hostess at her brother Joe's restaurant "The Old Wharf Inn" and later helped care for infants at her daughter's day care, "Miss Ann's Day Care."
Mrs. Sparks was a life long member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. She also attended Wesley Chapel Church, Rock Hall United Methodist Church, Salem United Methodist Church, Fairlee and St. James United Methodist Church in Worton.
She loved to dance and in her youth she enjoyed horseback riding on East Neck Island, attending local baseball games and sailing with her brothers. In her later years she enjoyed the fellowship of the Busy Bee's Senior Group.
Mrs. Sparks is survived by three children - Ann V. Price of Chestertown, the Rev. Frank O. Sutton Jr. of Wyoming, Del. and Margery A. Frybarger of Rock Hall; two twin brothers, Joseph H. Strong Sr. and Robert H. Strong Sr.; seven grandchildren - John F. Price IV, James T. Price, Joseph A. Price, Rosann L. Elgin, Sandra L. Chance, Frank O. Sutton III and Robert C. Tawoda; 15 great-granchildren - Brittani Spry, James Price, Josh Price, Travis Spry, Jenny Price, Josh Chance, Michael Price, Hayden Chance, Sarah Elgin, Taylor Sutton, Nick Price, Susie Price, Buddy Elgin, Peyton Chance and Lindsey Jane Elgin.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank O. Sutton Sr. who passed away in 1949. They were married in 1938 and a brother, James Edgar Strong Sr.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home in Chestertown. Burial followed at the St. Paul's Cemetery in Chestertown.
Pallbearers were John Price IV, James T. Price, Joseph A. Price, James E. Elgin III, David C. Chance, Frank O. Sutton III and Robert C. Tawoda.
Mable Ann Cephas
CAMBRIDGE - Mable Ann Manokey Cephas, 56, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002 at her home.
She was born Nov. 11, 1946 in Cambridge, the daughter of the late John and Marie Manokey.
On Dec. 22, 1984 she married Odonna Cephas in Cambridge where they made their home for 18 years.
Before her illness she was employed at Hi Tech Plastics. She enjoyed cooking for everyone.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Valenda Manokey and her fiancé, Broderick Dunaway, both of Cambridge; three stepchildren, Gavin Cornish of Cambridge, Rhodesa Cephas and Odonna Cephas Jr. of Laurel, Del.; six grandchildren - Gerry Berry and Ashyra Dunaway, both of Cambridge, Tadrain Jr. and Deadrain Ennels, Da'Vieon Cephas and Menna Cephas, all of Laurel, Del.; two sisters, Jeanette Griffin of Cambridge, Cora Pinder of Laurel, Md.; two brothers, John Manokey of Washington, D.C. and William Manokey of Hyattsville. She was also survived by a mother-in-law, Mary Pinkett; a father-in-law, Joe Louis Cephas; six sisters-in-law, Teresa Cephas and Ethel Cephas, both of Hurlock, Margaret Cephas of Salisbury, Odessa Cephas of Centreville, Nicey Cephas of Cambridge, Brenda Moses Manokey of Hyattsville; three brothers-in-law, Joe Louis Cephas of Hurlock, Charles Pinder of Laurel, James Griffin of Washington, D.C.; a special niece, Vonzella Thomas; a special friend, Sandra Clark and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Nov. 26 at Bethel AME Church in Cambridge. Burial will follow in the Old Field Cemetery.
There will be a viewing from 7 to 8 tonight at the Henry Funeral Home, P.A.
Gertrude C. Jackson
WILMINGTON, Del. - Gertrude Conaway Jackson, 91, formerly of East New Market, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002 at St. Frances Hospital in Wilmington, Del.
She was born in 1911, in East New Market, the daughter of the late William and Nona Conaway. She was educated in the public schools of Dorchester County. Her late husband was Roland Jackson.
She is survived by a sister, Alva Keene of Cambridge, cousins Beulah Sipple and Nona Sharvels of Wilmington and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, in Wilmington at 11 a.m. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at St. Paul U.A. M.E. Church, 3114 N. Market St., in Wilmington.
James E. Davis
BALTIMORE - James E. Davis, of Cambridge, passed away at the Baltimore VA Medical Center on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002. He was the husband of Betsy Johnson Davis.
Funeral arrangements, which are incomplete, are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge.
Eduardo V. Barnes
FEDERALSBURG - Eduardo Valdez Barnes, 49, died on Monday, Nov. 11, 2002 at his home.
He was born Nov. 8, 1953 in Seaford, Del., the son of Richard Bacon of Wilmington and the late Jacqueline Barnes Holden.
Mr. Barnes worked in Sanitation Management and most recently at B & G in Hurlock. He attended Georgetown Church of God and Macedonia. He enjoyed playing basketball.
Besides his father, he is survived by his wife, Inez Graham Barnes of Federalsburg; a daughter, Shania Thomas of Starr, a son, Leron Waples of New Castle, Del.; a granddaughter, Aniyah L. Corker of Starr; three brothers, Joseph Holden of Georgetown, Vince Holden of Cambridge, Wilmore Holden of Pennsylvania; three sisters-in-law, Lutisha Gibbs of Georgetown, Deana Williams and Rose Mary Pinkett, both of Federalsburg; three brothers-in-law, William Gibbs of Georgetown, Floyd Williams and Carroll Pinkett, both of Federalsburg; an uncle, Ira Barnes of Seaford and two special nieces, Ron-nae Ricketts and Sabrina Ricketts of Federalsburg; and two close friends, James Pauls and Milan "Dukie" Johnson.
Besides his mother, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mantoya Pressley and Demetria Barnes.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday at the Church of God on Clarence Street in Seaford. Burial will follow at Federal Hill Cemetery in Federalsburg. Friends may call at the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home in Federalsburg from 7 to 9 tonight and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
Doris H. Windsor
CAMBRIDGE - Doris H. Windsor, 83, passed away Tuesday morning, Nov. 26, 2002 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton. She was the wife of the late Carroll G. Windsor and had been in the hospital for 10 days.
She was born May 1, 1919 in Cambridge, the daughter of the late Capt. William Franklin and Sallie Stephens Hubbard.
Mrs. Windsor was raised and attended public schools in Cambridge and was married to Mr. Windsor on April 11, 1936. He passed away on July 13, 1979.
As a young woman she was employed by the Phillips Packing Co. and later worked as manager at the Thrifty Shop and a sales clerk at Anne's Millinery Shop. She also helped her daughter at Gale Winds restaurant.
Mrs. Windsor was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and a past president of the Gleaners Class. She was also a member of the Women of the Moose and the Auxiliary of the American Legion.
She is survived by one daughter, Gail W. Olsen and one son, Carroll G. "Skip" Windsor Jr. and his wife, Sharlotte of Cambridge; seven grandchildren - Eric D. Olsen, Gail Brennan, Russell Hibble, Joseph W. Hibble, Kristina Krewson, Annie Windsor and Carroll G. Windsor III; four great-grandchilden - Erika Olsen, Cameron Hartman, Rebecca Hibble and Andrea Hibble and one niece and two nephews.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Wallis Hibble and a brother, William F. Hubbard Jr.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at the Thomas Funeral Home by the Rev. Dale L. Brown. Burial will take place in Dorchester Memorial Park. Friends will be received at the funeral home during the hour before the service.

Granville H. Hales Jr.
CAMBRIDGE - Granville H. "Granny" Hales Jr., 77, passed away Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 26, 2002 at Dorchester General Hospital.
He was born Oct. 16, 1925 in Cambridge, the son of the late Granville Harrison and Nettie Collins Hales.
Mr. Hales was raised in Cambridge and was a 1942 graduate of Cambridge High School. Following graduation Mr. Hales was employed by the Social Security Administration in Baltimore until joining the U.S. Navy in July of 1943. While in the Navy he was a parachute rigger and served in the Pacific. He was discharged in April of 1946.
For 45 years he was employed by the C&P Telephone Co. of Maryland, retiring in 1988. While with the phone company he was a lineman, cable splicer and later a testman.
Mr. Hales has always been interested in sports. In addition to playing basketball he was an avid bowler and participated as a volunteer for the C-SDHS athletic programs.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and the Baraca Class. He held numerous positions within the church and was a member of the Baraca Class band.
Mr. Hales was a member of Dorchester Post 91, American Legion; Choptank Memorial Post 7460 VFW; the Telephone Pioneers of America and had worked as an adult leader for the Boy Scouts. He was currently serving on the Salvation Army Advisory board while working as a volunteer at the Thrift Shop. In 2001 he was named the "Volunteer of the Year" of the Maryland-Virginia Division. He was also quite active with the Richardson Maritime Museum and the Nathan Skipjack Committee and was a part of the original skipjack committee.
Mr. Hales is survived by his wife, the former Barbara Hinson, to whom he was married on Oct. 20, 1950; three daughters, Bobbie H. Gore of Cambridge, Richie H. Urtz of Lynchburg, Va., and Rachel H. Budd of Cambridge; two sons, Granville H. Hales III and John R. Hales, both of Cambridge; seven grandchildren - Harrison and Morgan Budd, Eliza Urtz, Molly and David Hales and Zeb and Barbara Anne Gore; two stepgrandchildren, Emily Tavares and Amanda Craig; three sisters, Eileen Majors of Cambridge, Janet McDaniel of Williamsport and Beverly Moricle of Burlington, N.C. and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth "Libby" Gould.
A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace UM Church by the Rev. Douglas M. Ridley and Capt. Dwayne A. Durham. Burial will take place in Cambridge Cemetery.
Friends will be received at the Thomas Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Pearl S. Creager
CAMBRIDGE - Pearl S. Creager, 85, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002 at her home. She had been in failing health for the past six months.
She was born June 10, 1917 in Goldsboro, the daughter of the late Jesse Alexander and Lillie Ann Thomas Young.
She had attended schools in Greensboro. On April 5, 1958 she married Guy S. Smith. He passed away on Sept. 19, 1985. She was later married to Lyle Creager on Sept. 18, 1993.
Mrs. Creager had worked for the Rob Roy Co. in Cambridge for a number of years, and later worked with Jenny Felty at the Sewing Basket. She had enjoyed sewing and embroidering for most of her life.
She was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church and had been a member of the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of Cambridge Lodge No. 1211, Women of the Moose, The Women's Homemaker Club and the Dorchester Swingers Square-dance Club.
Besides her husband of Cambridge, Mrs. Creager is survived by one daughter, Dorothy R. Mills of Beaver Neck; one stepdaughter, Lynda C. Self of Huntingtown; one stepson, Billy R. Creager of Suffolk, Va.; three grandchildren, Katherine M. Willoughby, Gary W. Mills, Vicki M. Hurley; five stepgrandchildren, Donna S. Neal, Aime Self, Bryan D. Self, Kimberly Rae Creager, Katherine Creager; seven great-grandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Grace D. Clendaniel of Marydel, Jessie Postles of Frederica, Del., and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters.
A funeral service will be held 1 p .m. Saturday at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Helen B. Lockwood and the Rev. Randall T. Blackmon officiating. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Friday at the funeral home.

Lucille N. Basset
HURLOCK - Lucille N. Bassett, who lived on Wright's Avenue in Hurlock for many years, died at North Arundel Hospital in Glen Burnie on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002. She was 88.
She was born near Hurlock on Oct. 6, 1914, the daughter of the late Herbert E. and Donah Poole Nichols. Her husband, J. Vincent Bassett, preceded her in death.
She was a graduate of Hurlock High School and for many years she owned and operated The Specialty Shop, a ladies' apparel store in Hurlock. She was a member of Unity-Washington United Methodist Church in Hurlock.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara B. Rand of Millersville; and two grandchildren, Brenda L. Smith of Millersville and David B. Rand of Crownsville; and four great-grandchildren. A sister, Elizabeth Nichols preceded her in death.
Funeral services for her will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home at 216 N. Main St. in Federalsburg, with the Rev. Ruth Tull officiating.
Burial will be private at the convenience of the family in Unity-Washington Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday afternoon from 1-2 p.m.
The family has requested that donations be made in her memory to Unity-Washington United Methodist Church, P.O.B. 298 Hurlock, MD 21643.
Alvina M. Jester
CHOPTANK - Alvina Monath Jester, 71, passed away Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002 at the Memorial Hospital at Easton.
She was born Jan. 1, 1931 in Easton, the daughter of the late Louis and Daisy Alberta Huff Monath. Her husband, James Thomas Jester, preceded her in death on March 24, 2001.
Mrs. Jester graduated from Federalsburg High School and had worked for the Maryland State Department of Education as a data entry operator for migrant children. She loved to garden.
She is survived by three sons, Russell Alan Jester of Delray Beach, Fla., Earl Louis Jester Sr. and his wife, Terri of Choptank and Robert Francis Jester and his wife, Dawn of Choptank; five grandchildren, Lori E. Jester, Michael A. Jester, Earl L. Jester Jr., April L. Jester and Daniel R. Jester; a brother, Leonard Monath of Concord, Md. and several nieces and nephews.
A brother, Frank Monath and a sister, Myrtle Monath Marine, preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held noon today at the Framptom-Hawkins-Eskow Funeral Home, P.A. in Federalsburg. Burial will follow in Belmont Cemetery in Choptank.
Friends were received at the funeral home on Sunday.
