VESTA E. MEISTER
CUMBERLAND - Vesta Emma Meister, 93, of 919 Harding Ave., Cumberland, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at Memorial Hospital.

Born on Jan. 12, 1908, in Chaneysville, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Thomas Iames and Emma Elmira (Cooper) Iames. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles R. "Bud" Meister in 1984.

Mrs. Meister was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church.

She is survived by two sons, Ralph A. Meister and wife Eleanor, Naperville, Ill., Thomas E. Meister and wife Caroline, Alden, Pa.; a sister, Sylvia Crabtree, Hancock; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at St. Luke's Lutheran Church on Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Stephen F. Yelovich officiating.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

Pallbearers for Mrs. Meister will be Robert H. Rinehart, Steve Bloom, Michael Bloom, David Hartman, Jonathan Meister and John G. Blades Jr.

Mrs. Meister will be taken to the church at 12:30 p.m.

WILLIAM D. GROWDEN
BALTIMORE - William Derward "Shorty" Growden, 79, of Baltimore, died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at the Maryland General Veterans Hospital, Baltimore.

Born on March 23, 1921, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Charles H. and Margaret C. (Eichner) Growden. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Carl Growden; and one sister, Doris B. Kuehl.

Mr. Growden was a retired employee of Greenmount Cemetery, Baltimore. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

Surviving are two sisters, Leona Lee Walters and husband James E., Thelma E. Moyer and husband William Frank, all of Ocala, Fla.; one sister-in-law, Mary Jo Growden, Cumberland; one niece, Kathy Lynn Brown and husband Kevin, Apex, N.C.; three nephews, Gary James Walters and wife Barbara, Great Falls, Va., Gregory Wayne Walters and wife Nancy, Idaho, Thomas M. Growden and wife Nora, Bunker Hill, W.Va.; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Mark C. Dill officiating.

Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap, Flintstone.

M. MADALEAN CUPPETT
RIDGELEY, W.Va. - Mrs. M. Madalean (Zollner) Cuppett of Ridgeley, was born on May 30, 1919 in Cumberland, Md., and died on Jan. 21, 2001, at the Devlin Manor Nursing Home, Cumberland.

Surviving are a son, Michael L. Zollner and wife Wanda of Carpendale, and their children, Michael L. Zollner Jr. of Virginia, Kevin Zollner of Cumberland, Phyllis Baine of Ohio, and Donald Zollner of Virginia; 11 great-grandchildren; another son, Gary D. Cuppett and wife Darlene of Rocky Mount, N.C., and their children, Gary D. Cuppett Jr. of West Virginia, and Shane A. Cuppett of North Carolina; and two great-grandchildren; and a son, Alan C. Cuppett of Wiley Ford, W.Va.

At her request, Mrs. Cuppett donated her body to the Human Gift Registry at West Virginia University Medical Center, Morgantown. This gift promotes the medical education and research of the University Medical Program.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

The family requests that any expressions of sympathy be given to the Calvary United Methodist Church, 30 Knobley St., Ridgeley, WV.

KENNETH R. BOWERS
MESQUITE, Texas - Kenneth Ray Bowers, 52, of Mesquite, passed away at his home on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001.

Born on May 20, 1948, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., he was the son of the late Howard and Josephine (Puffinberger) Bowers.

Mr. Bowers served 20 years in the U.S. Army, along with eight years Civil Service as an Automotive Technician. He was a member of the Warrant Officers Association and an active fisherman and hunter. He was also a football commemorative card collector and enjoyed working on computers. An outdoorsman, he also enjoyed working in his garden and wood-working. He was truly loved and will be missed by all who knew him and loved him!

Surviving are his wife of 32 years, Linda Bowers; three sons, Fred Bowers and wife Mary, Garland, Todd Bowers and wife Shelia, Aberdeen, Md., and Kevin Bowers and wife Lorri, Mesquite; and eight grandchildren, Michael Bowers, 15, Nicole Bowers, 12, Ra'Chael Bowers, 11, Amanda Bowers, 10, Shelby Bowers, 9, Christopher Bowers, 8, Stephanie Bowers, 7, and Amber Bowers, 6; two sisters, Pat and Kim; and four brothers, Wesley, Virgil, Steve and Rick.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. B. Gene Cecil and the Rev. Kenneth DeHaven officiating.

MELDA J. BITTINGER
GRANTSVILLE - Melda June Bittinger, 74, of 1822 Dung Hill Road, Grantsville, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.

Born on Nov. 26, 1926, in Somerset County, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Victor C. and Delphia May (Platter) Miner. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Paul S. Bittinger on Sept. 28, 1966.

Mrs. Bittinger was a homemaker and a member of Laughlin Church of the Brethren.

She is survived by five sons, Paul Bittinger, Lawrence, Kan., William and Dwane Bittinger, both of Huntsville, Texas, Jay and Eric Bittinger, both of Grantsville; one daughter, Lois Radcliff, Bel Pre, Ohio; three brothers, Elmer Miner, Elgin, Ill., Reed and John Miner, both of Grantsville; one sister, Anna Jean Heston, Hancock; 14 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., Grantsville, on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted in the funeral home on Friday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Ross Glotfelty officiating.

Interment will be in Grantsville Cemetery.

OLYN E. TICHNELL
DUBOIS, Pa. - Olyn Elzworth "Skip" Tichnell, 82, of DuBois, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, in DuBois.

Born near Barnum, W.Va., on Jan. 12, 1919, he was a son of the late Arnold and Mary Nelson Tichnell. He also was preceded in death by his first wife, Nina Mary McVicker Tichnell; and his sister, Ruth Kyle.

Surviving are his wife, Edna; daughter, the Rev. Ruby Nina O'Haver and husband the Rev. William A. O'Haver Jr.; brother, Arnold Tichnell and wife Helen, of Cumberland, Md.; two sisters, Ollie Custer and husband Charles of Barton, Md., and Mary Schelotta Beeman, Frostburg, Md.; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Olyn was a veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion, Barton. He was of the Pentecostal faith.

At his request, he was cremated. No public memorial services will be held.

Family requests any donations be sent to the Rev. Ruby N. O'Haver, P.O. Box 345, Barton, MD 21521.

GWENDOLYN F. LAYMAN
CUMBERLAND - Gwendolyn F. Layman, 71, of 37117 Applewood Road, Richmond, Va., formerly of Cumberland, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, at home.

Surviving is a daughter, Miss Mettie Youngerman of Richmond.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 10, at noon in the Berean Baptist Church, 2914 Cogbill Road, Richmond. Inurnment will be at Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the deceased's favorite charities, the SPCA or the Richmond Animal League.

The Cremation Society of Richmond is in charge of arrangements.
