BERNARD F. COYLE JR.
LAVALE - Bernard "Bernie" F. Coyle Jr., 69, of 11 Forest Drive, LaVale, died Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at Sinai Hospital, Baltimore.
Born on Nov. 27, 1931, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Bernard F. Coyle Sr. and Marie A. (Shannon) Coyle. He was also preceded by a brother, Thomas E. Coyle, and a sister, Margaret Ellen Kastner.
Mr. Coyle was a former partner of E.V. Coyle Furniture Company, U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the B.P.O.E. Lodge #63, and the Fort Cumberland Post #13, American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia A. (Paupe) Coyle, LaVale; two sons, Bernard F. Coyle III, Paducah, Ky., David Coyle and wife Tamela, Romney, W.Va.; three daughters, Patricia Coyle Spiker and husband Steven, Bedford, Pa., Anne Marie Goode and husband Charles, Charlestown, W.Va., Mary Shannon Blackway and husband Scott, Frederick; a brother, Richard J. Coyle, LaVale; two sisters, Martha A. Pirovolidis and husband Gino, Fallston, Mary Louise McDermott and husband Pick, Stamford, Conn.; and seven grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m.
A funeral service will be held at SS. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with the Father Vernon Busch officiating.
Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap.
Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
A wake service will be held on Tuesday at 8:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family requests that memorials be made to the Allegany County Public Library or the Sacred Heart Hospital, Cardiac Care Unit.
HOWARD W. WERNER
COCOA, Fla. - Howard Walter Werner, 82, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at his residence in Forest Lakes, Cocoa.
Born in Chicago on July 6, 1918, Mr. Werner retired and spent the winter months in Midlothian, Md.
He is survived by "Jane" his loving wife of 16 and a half years; his sons, Donald Werner of Waldorf, Md., and David Werner of Orlando; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his stepdaughters, Linda Walker and husband Raymond of Midlothian, and Lucille Bosco and husband Bob or Apollo Beach; his stepson, Matthew Skidmore and wife Joy of Midlothian; five step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Werner was a member of Central Community Church, Cocoa. Mr. Werner attended Frostburg United Methodist Church and was also a member of the Frostburg Elks Club.
Mr. Werner served in the United States Naval forces from 1944 until 1946.
Before his retirement, Mr. Werner was in sales and marketing and was in partnership in a marina in Leland, Mich. He retired and moved to Rockledge in the early 1980's.
A memorial service will be conducted Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Central Community Church, located at 300 Tucker Lane, Cocoa, Florida 32926.

AGATHA Y. TAM
CUMBERLAND - Agatha Yeung Tam, 81, formerly of Cumberland, passed away peacefully to the embrace of her Lord, Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001, at St. Vincent dePaul Nursing Home, Frostburg.
Born Feb. 28, 1919, in Macao, China, (formerly Portugal) near Hong Kong, she was the daughter of the late Anna Tang and Jose Yeung. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony Wai Chiu Tam of 42 years; one brother, the Rev. Fr. Antonio Yeung; and one sister, Agnes Yeung.
Mrs. Tam was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. She had a special devotion to the Blessed Mother, being a member of St. Patrick's Sodality. She was proud of her adopted country, USA, in which she had been a naturalized citizen for over 20 years. Her life reflects a gentle, quiet spirit and humility that radiates from her love of the Lord and family. She had been a benefactor of the Frostburg State University Scholarship Programs. She was the first to establish a Science Achievement Award for the annual Western Maryland Science Expo, in memory of her husband, Anthony. She founded the Science Research Scholarship at FSU for senior projects in Physics, Chemistry and Engineering.
Mrs. Tam was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother. She is survived by two sons, Prof. Francis Tam and wife Margaret (McGann), Frostburg, Dr. Simond S. Tam, New York; two daughters, Sr. Eucharista Tam, Hong Kong, Margaret Wong and husband Allen, Montreal, Canada; seven grandchildren, Mary, Peter and Matthew Tam, all of Frostburg, Michael, Grace and Gabriel Tam, all of New York, and Dr. Stanislaus Sherwood Wong, New York.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Saturday at 10 a.m. with Monsignor Thomas R. Bevan as celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests sympathy expressions to Frostburg State University Foundation for the Tam Scholarship Fund, St. Patrick's Catholic Church or the Bishop Walsh Middle/High School Science Department.
Grandsons, Peter Tam and Matthew Tam, will be pallbearers along with John Dougherty, Joe Helmstetter, Howard Hovatter and Buck Gephart.
MERRILL E. STURTZ
GRANTSVILLE - Merrill Edward Sturtz, 86, of 711 Baker Road, Grantsville, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Feb. 12, 1914, in Fairhope, Pa., he was the son of the late Wesley Aaron Sturtz and Mary Beulah (Devore) Sturtz. He also was preceded in death by his second wife, Hilda (Crowe) Sturtz.
He was a member of the Jennings United Methodist Church and the Methodist Men. He retired after 43 years of service from the Celanese Corporation.
Surviving are his wife, Anna V. (Fazenbaker) Sturtz; one son, Robert D. Sturtz, Calhoun, Ga.; one daughter, Marianna K. Alemi, Orlando, Fla.; three stepsons, Robert J. Platter, Frostburg, Floyd D. Platter, Grantsville, and Blaine T. Platter, Smithsburg; one stepdaughter, Virginia J. "Tiny" Platter, Gaithersburg; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; 10 step-grandchildren, and 13 step-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., Grantsville on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., Grantsville, on Monday at 2 p.m. with Pastor Brenda Shreve officiating.

REV. VIRGINIA J. SHOWALTER
FAIRMONT, W.Va. - The Rev. Virginia Joan Gorham Showalter, 58, of Fairmont, East Grafton Road, died on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, at Ruby Memorial Hospital.
She was born on June 8, 1942, in Hartford, Conn., the only child of the late Charles and Beryl Murray Gorham.
She graduated from Hartford High School in Hartford. She earned an accounting degree and worked as a CPA in a bank. It had always been her desire to be a minister. She graduated from Andover Newton Theological School in Mass. She was ordained a First Baptist Minister of the American Baptist Conference in Middletown, Conn., of the Hartford Baptist Assoc. In 1986, she came to Romney in Hampshire Co., W.Va., as an United Methodist Minister. She was ordained an Elder in the United Methodist Church in 1992. She became a Rural Chaplain and a missionary in the Rural Mission of the Church in 1995. In June 2000, she moved to Fairmont as Pastor for the Walnut Grove, Levels and Colfax United Methodist Churches. She was very happy with her life as a pastor. The Rev. Showalter enjoyed the churches and people in Fairmont. Her life's desire was to serve the Lord. A true Christian volunteer, she was looking forward to working with the Soup Opera and other community projects.
She is survived by her husband, Paul Showalter, the couple were married
on June 24, 1987; four stepdaughters, Pauline Miller of Green Spring, Betty Nealis and her husband William of Romney, Maxine Adams and her husband Kenneth of Springfield, and Nancy Loy and her husband Ford of Romney; 15 step-grandchildren; 21 step-great-grandchildren; three step-great-great grandchildren; three aunts; and several cousins.
The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral service will be held at the Shaffer Funeral Home in Romney, on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001, at 1 p.m.
Burial will follow at the Levels Cemetery.
The grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

WILLIAM G. DUCKWORTH
PITTSBURGH, Pa. - William G. Duckworth, 80, of Pittsburgh, died Thursday, Jan. 25, 2001, in Wexford House Nursing Center.
He was a retired electrical technician.
Born in Lonaconing, Md., on May 26, 1920, he was a son of George W. Duckworth and Margaret O'Dae Duckworth.
Surviving are his wife, Anne Walbert Duckworth; daughters, Judy A. Watson of Pittsburgh, Beppy E. Masten of Pittsburgh, Phyllis L. Connelly of Pittsburgh, and Patricia M. Rupp of Chicago, Ill.; sons, Charles O. Duckworth of Houston, Texas, Steven L. Duckworth of Eustis, Fla., William C. Duckworth of Dover, Pa., and Michael B. Duckworth of Omaha, Neb.; 23 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Friends will be received at the Simons Funeral Home Inc., 7720 Perry Highway, Pittsburgh, on Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Blessing services will be held in the chapel of the Simons Funeral Home Inc. on Monday at 11 a.m.
Interment will follow in Allegheny Memorial Park Cemetery.
