CARTER E. BANKS
CUMBERLAND -- Carter E. "Corky" Banks Jr., 58, formerly of Cumberland, and residing in Bronx, N.Y., died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, in Bronx.
Born Feb. 12, 1942, in Cumberland, he was the son of Mayola (Page) Banks, Cumberland, and the late Carter E. Banks Sr.
Mr. Banks was a 1960 graduate of Fort Hill High School and a manager of Kenny's Garage in New York. He also served in the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army.
Surviving besides his mother are his wife, Mary (Merriweather) Banks; a son, Purvis Banks, Petersburg, Va.; two daughters, Tracey Banks, Homestead, Pa., and Erica Banks, at home; two brothers, Clinton Banks, Cumberland, and Corvin Banks and wife Kathleen, Mount Airy; and one grandchild.
A graveside service will be held at Sunset Memorial Park on Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Gary N. Curtis officiating.
The Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, is in charge of arrangements.
VERA W. JOHNSON
CUMBERLAND -- Vera West Johnson, 94, of Cumberland Nursing Home, formerly of Flintstone, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, at Memorial Hospital.
Born June 3, 1906, in Boynton, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William and Emma (Bittner) West. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Bruce Johnson in 1973.
Mrs. Johnson was a retired Civil Service employee in Indian Head, Md. She was a member of the Bedford Road Baptist Church and the Women's Missionary Union, and she was a Sunday School teacher.
Surviving are one daughter Pauline Johnson Lewis and husband Charles, Flintstone; two sisters, Evelyn Symbor, Baltimore; Ruth Diest, Florida; one brother, Donald West, Florida; three grandchildren, Bruce Lewis and wife Teresa, Marbury; Charles Lewis and wife Kim, Ellenboro, N.C.; Kathy Brubaker and husband Frank, Kilmarnock, Va.; six great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Friday from 9 to 10 a.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 10 a.m. with Pastor Bruce Baugus officiating.
Interment will be in the Trinity Memorial Cemetery, Waldorf, Md.
The family requests that contributions be made to the Bedford Road Baptist Church.
FREDA M. ELLIOTT
WESTERNPORT -- Freda Marie Elliott, 78, of 422 Walnut St., Westernport, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born at Hampshire Heights, W.Va., on Aug. 16, 1922, she was the daughter of the late George and Mary V. (Paugh) Shrout.
Mrs. Elliott was retired from the Allegany County Board of Education, having worked in food service, and was also a former employee of Celanese Fibers Corp. She was a life long member of First Assembly of God Church, Westernport, a life member of the American Red Cross, having volunteered with the blood bank, and helped from the Gray Ladies. Mrs. Elliott was a member of the Westernport Senior Citizens, a member of the Allegany County S.A.L.T. program, a member of Church Women United of Westernport, and a 48 year member of the County Election Board.
Surviving are her husband, Allen Elliott; one son, Daniel Elliott and wife Doris of Cumberland; and one sister, Lillian Dawson of Belle View, Fla.
The family will receive friends at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at First Assembly of God Church, Westernport, on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Robert Collett officiating.
Interment will be in Philos Cemetery, Westernport.
ALFRED W. BRITTEN
CUMBERLAND -- Funeral services for Alfred W. Britten will be conducted at St. John's Lutheran Church on Tuesday at 11 a.m. Friends will be received at the church one hour prior to the service.
Inurnment will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Flintstone.
At Mr. Britten's request, his body will be cremated.
PAUL P. ZOOK
GRANTSVILLE -- Paul Perry Zook, 93, of Grantsville, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at his home.
He was born on March 23, 1907, in Lititz, Pa., the son of the late Ira and Susanna (Hershberger) Zook.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Fannie (Bender) Miller Zook; one son, Paul Zook; seven daughters, Mildred, Catherine, Rachel and Miriam Zook, Martha Fisher, Mary Miller and Margaret Hooks; one brother, Henry Zook; 14 step children, Ida Marie, Rachel, Daniel, Ivan, Lewis, Katharine, Allen and Miriam Miller, Loretta Burkey, Rhoda Keefer, Alice Orendorf, Gertrude Slabach, Iva Doyle and Barbara Miller; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., Grantsville, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Maple Glen Mennonite Church. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the services.
Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Expressions of sympathy may be directed to the Hospice of Garrett County.
BETTY L. GEORGE
CUMBERLAND -- Betty Lee George, 77, of Cumberland, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born on June 15, 1923, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Randolph B. Hartley and Nela (Alt) Hartley. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Doyal B. George, who died on Nov. 21, 2000; a brother, Howard R. Hartley; and a sister, Genevieve Leasure.
Mrs. George was a member of Central Assembly of God Church, where she taught Sunday school and was a Missionette Leader and involved in Women's Ministries.
She is survived by four daughters, Barbara J. Gaumer and husband Curtis, Cumberland, Norma L. George, Margate, Fla., Shirley A. Snyder, Cumberland, and Dottie S. Wagoner and husband Rick, Fort Ashby, W.Va.; a brother, Joseph B. Hartley and wife Julia, Cumberland; two sisters, Ruth E. Leasure, Tarentum, Pa., Eloise Sarah Knippenberg, Cumberland; six grandchildren, Greg Gaumer and wife Carol, Cumberland, Shay Cole and husband Billy, Margate, Fla., Shannon Lewis and wife Amy, Lakeland, Fla., Trisha Wagoner, Fort Ashby, W.Va., Tara Hockaday and husband John, Fort Ashby, Sherri Snyder, Cumberland; five great-grandchildren, Zachary Cole, Brady Gaumer, Brennen Cole, Carter Lewis and Kristin Shoemaker; and a special great-granddaughter expected in April, Alli Brooke Hockaday.

Services will be conducted at Central Assembly of God Church, 2020 Bedford St., Cumberland, on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Douglas Seaman and the Rev. Robert Hymes officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Mrs. George will be taken to the church one hour prior to the service.
JOHN R. LOGSDON SR.
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- John R. Logsdon Sr., 58, of Martinsburg, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at his residence.
Born on Sept. 30, 1942, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Noah Logsdon and Laura Wiles Logsdon. He was employed with the Fountainhead Apartments.
He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, John R. Logsdon Jr., and Sandra Logsdon of Jones Spring; one daughter, Debra K. Murphy, Martinsburg; two grandchildren, Ashley Logsdon and Michael Murphy Jr.; one sister, Doris Alene Payne, St. Mary's County, Md.; and fiancee, Hazel Crawford, Cumberland, Md.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon Wolfe Logsdon.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Brown Funeral Home with the Rev. James D. Riley Jr.
Interment will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m.
