CUMBERLAND -- Friends will be received for Bessie M. Burke at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
Interment will be in Davis Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Steve Lewis and Mike Burke, grandsons, Greg Martz, Tony Ziler and Martin Cecil, grandsons-in-law, and John Broll, friend.
FRANK A. BATES
CUMBERLAND -- Frank Allen Bates, 53, of 414 Fayette St., Cumberland, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Memorial Hospital.
Born on Jan. 9, 1948, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late John Joseph Bates and Elton V. (Frisby) Bates. He was also preceded in death by four sisters and a brother.
Mr. Bates was an employee of A.B.L., a 1966 graduate of Allegany High School, he was a U.S. Army veteran of Vietnam. He was a member of the McKendree United Methodist Church, the Maryland National Guard, Company C, 129th Signal Battalion, Vietnam Veterans Chapter #172, and the Fulton Meyers Post #153, American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Carole J. (Lefler) Bates, Cumberland; three daughters, Stephanie A. Bates, Augusta, Ga., Frankie Lynn Bates, Calabash, N.C., and Lisa E. Bates, Cumberland; two brothers, Joe Bates and wife Karen, Cumberland, and Jerry Bates, Martinsburg, W.Va.; seven sisters, Junita Redman and husband Robert, Hartford, Conn., Janet Woodward and husband Calvin, Hartford, Roberta Brown, Baltimore, Joyce Hendricks and husband Richard, Temple Hills, Parthenia Stephens, Carol Biggs and husband Mervin, and Donna Hawley and husband Willard, all of Cumberland; and two grandsons, Trevor Allen Bates, Cumberland, and Noah Alexander Bates, Calabash.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 12 noon with the Rev. Theodore D. Higby officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park. Military honors will be accorded at the graveside by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
Pallbearers will be Francis Williams, Mervin Biggs, Robert Powell, Cliff Williams, Keith Bates and Patrick Meade.
LOIS M. SIMONS
FROSTBURG -- Lois Marlene Simons, 66, of Frostburg, formerly of French Lake, Ind., died on Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, in Anderson, Ind.
Born on Feb. 21, 1934, in Martin County, Ind., she was the daughter of the late Stanford Earl and Zelda Madge (Howell) Archer.
Mrs. Simons was a Certified Notary and had been employed with the Standard Mutual Insurance Company.
Surviving are her son, Mark S. Simons; granddaughter, Anne Louise Simons of Frostburg; two brothers, Grover Archer and wife Janice of Anderson, and Wayne Archer and wife Estelene of Waverly, Ind.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Brosmer-Drabing Funeral Home in French Lick, (812) 936-9955, on Tuesday from 6:30 until 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 12 noon.
Services will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday at 12 noon with the Rev. Mike Grable officiating.
Interment will be in the Emmons Ridge Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
A. HARLAND BECKMAN
OCALA, Fla. -- A. Harland Beckman, 86, of Beckmans Peninsula, Deep Creek Lake, Md., died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at the Ocala Regional Medical Hospital.
Born on Oct. 5, 1914, in Swanton, Md., he was the son of the late Archibald H. and Tryphena M. (Fitzwater) Beckman.
Mr. Beckman was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Mr. Beckman was a member of the Woodman of the World, and was owner and operator of Glen Acres Resort, Deep Creek Lake, where he retired at the age of 80.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Helen (White) Beckman; one daughter, Linda May Thomas, Deep Creek Lake; one son, H. Edward "Ed" Beckman, Deep Creek Lake; one grandson, Eric Edward Thomas Tyson, Corners, Va.; and a special lifetime friend, Fred Broadwater, Sierra Vista, Ariz.
The body is at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, Md., where friends may call on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Pat Pittsnogle officiating.
Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Swanton.
Pallbearers will be Eric Thomas, Paul Thomas, Harold J. White, James Lascaris, Melvin Beckman and Harold Moon.

CARMELITA S. FLEMING
KEYSER, W.Va. -- Carmelita Sirna Fleming, 84, of the Heartland of Keyser Nursing Home, Keyser, formerly of Route 1, Ridgeley, died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser.
Born on Aug. 29, 1916, in Cumberland, Md., she was the daughter of the late Rosa "Rose" Ridolfo Sirna and Calogero "Charlie" Sirna, and stepfather, Salvatore "Sam" Sirna. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Fleming; three brothers, Joseph Sirna, Michael Sirna and Charles Sirna; two sisters, Mary Sirna Martin and Eleanor Sirna Mull; and one son-in-law, Kenny Wright.
Mrs. Fleming was a retired Nurse Anesthetist, after 35 years of service. She was also a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Ridgeley. She was a graduate of St. Mary's High School, Cumberland, Sacred Heart School of Nursing, and completed her anesthetic training in Wilmington, Del.
Surviving are three daughters, Patricia Fleming Sarikelle and husband Simsek, Copley, Ohio, Mary Jane Fleming Wright, Ridgeley, Ellen Kay Fleming Watkins and husband Henry, Yorktown, Va.; one son, Michael Fleming and wife Leslie Fleming, Keyser; two brothers, Frank Sirna, Painesville, Ohio, and John Sirna, Berwyn, Pa.; two sisters, Jean Sirna Detrick, LaVale, Md., and Margaret Sirna Owens, Beckley; and eight grandchildren, Alan Sarikelle and wife Sarah, Ft. Collins, Colo., Elena Sarikelle, Boston, Mass., Neal Wright and Nick Wright, both of Ridgeley, Emily Fleming and Brad Fleming, both of Keyser, Jennifer Watkins and Derek Watkins, both of Yorktown, Va.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Rosary will be recited on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
Mass of a Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Ridgeley, on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with Fr. James J. Chetock as celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Cumberland.
Contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
WANDA C. STEWART
PIEDMONT, W.Va. -- Wanda C. Green Stewart, 47, of 41 Lyons St., Piedmont, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, at Memorial Hospital in Cumberland, Md.
She was born in Keyser, on Oct. 8, 1953, and was the daughter of Frederick O. Green, McCoole, Md., and Georgia Bryan Evans of Piedmont.
She was a Protestant by faith. She had been employed at Moran Manor Nursing Home in Westernport.
She is survived by two sons, Chris Green and fiancee Autumn Kyle, Westernport, and Ricky Ray Stewart of Piedmont; one daughter, Faith Green, Piedmont; one sister, Mrs. Karen S. Virts, Piedmont; three grandchildren, Bradley, Brendon and Courtney Green of Westernport; one uncle, James William Bryan, Montgomery, Ala.; one aunt, Virginia Brafford, Keyser; one niece, Tina Marie Virts of Keyser; and one great nephew, Micah Virts of Keyser. She is also survived by three step-brothers and three step-sisters.
Two uncles, Robert and Thomas Bryan and one great-nephew, Matthew Virts, preceded her in death.
The family received friends at Fredlock Funeral Home in Piedmont, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Joseph Jarrett, Pastor, officiating.
Interment will be in Potomac Memorial Gardens in Keyser.
