LONA LIVENGOOD
CUMBERLAND -- Lona Livengood, 78, of Cumberland, died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Feb. 28, 1922, in Oldtown, she was the daughter of the late Charles Vernon and Edna L. (Hartman) Crock. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Warren J. Livengood; a sister, Helen Yonker; and a brother, Willis Crock.
Mrs. Livengood was a charter member of LaVale United Methodist Church. She retired from the National Security Agency and was an avid bingo player.
Surviving are a son, Gerald "Jerry" Livengood of Courtland, N.Y.; a daughter, Charlotte Livengood of Waldorf, Md.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Hazel (Smith) Barbe of Cumberland; and three brothers, Roy Crock of Imler, Pa., John Crock of Flintstone, and Wayne Crock of Cumberland.
Friends will be received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Bernadette Ross officiating.
Interment will follow in Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale.
ALICE J. MARTIN
MOUNT SAVAGE -- Alice Jeannette Martin, 82, of New Row Road, NW, Mount Savage, died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at Saint Vincent dePaul Nursing Center, Frostburg.
Born on June 16, 1918, in Mount Savage, she was the daughter of the late Thomas B. and Alice (Uhl) Birmingham. Mrs. Martin also was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene "Monk" Martin. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Martin was a retired custodian at Mount Savage School and formerly employed at the Celanese Corp.
She was a member of the Mount Savage United Methodist Church, the Frostburg Fraternal Order of Eagles Ladies' Auxiliary 1273, the Frostburg Senior Citizens and S.C.A.M.P.S.
Surviving are one son, Gary S. Martin and wife June Ann, Morantown; one daughter, Linda J. Sweitzer, Enterprize, Ala.; four grandchildren, Kenneth Martin, Frostburg, Tim Martin, Morantown, Tammy Beal, Mount Savage, and Michael Sweitzer, Versallies, Ky.; three great-grandchildren, Sadie Beal, Mount Savage, Molle Martin, Frostburg, and Jesse Baker, Frostburg; and several nephews.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Mount Savage United Methodist Church on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Richard C. Broome Jr. officiating.
Interment will be in Mount Savage Methodist Cemetery.

ALVERTA L. SHAFFER
HYNDMAN, Pa. -- Alverta Leota Shaffer, 99, of Hyndman Road, Hyndman, died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at WMHS Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born June 12, 1901, in Hyndman, she was a daughter of the late Susie (Hendrickson) and Enoch Shaffer. The last survivor of her immediate family, she also was preceded in death by one brother, Earl, and by three sisters, Blanche Kennell, Viola Delbrook and Helen Shaffer.
Ms. Shaffer is survived by nieces Mildred Wisler, Mary Shroyer, Wilma Delbrook, Doris Shaffer and Gwen Kennell and their families: Charles and Steve Wisler, Glenna Shroyer and Linda Deist; Edward Delbrook, Janet Day, David and Dennis Delbrook; Rodney and John Shaffer; and Keith, Colen and Mark Kennell.
Ms. Shaffer had retired from the Celanese Corp., Cumberland. She was a former member of the Hyndman Senior Citizens.
Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, 169 Clarence St., Hyndman, on Friday, Feb. 23, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Rebecca J. Vardiman officiating.
Interment will be in the Hyndman Cemetery.
LAWRENCE E. GROWDEN
FREDERICK -- Lawrence E. "Bill" Growden, 73, of 10215 Old Liberty Road, Frederick, died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, at his home.
Born Nov. 29, 1927, in Centerville, Pa., he was the son of the late Raymond R. and Minnie Mae (Gillium) Growden. He was the husband of Bernice Mary (Michaels) Growden who preceded him in death on March 7, 1999. They were married
for 48 years.
Mr. Growden was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, Libertytown, Md.; Mount Pleasant Ruritan Club; Third Degree Knights of Columbus of Frederick Council 1662; Potomac Edison Forerunners; Mount Pleasant Food and Friends, and he volunteered at the Frederick Food Bank.
He was a retired 35-year employee of Allegheny Power System. He began his career at the River Plant in Cumberland, and then was transferred to the Line Department in Frederick in 1970. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially with his grandson, Andrew. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Surviving are one daughter, Donna Growden Rothlauf and grandson Andrew William Rothlauf; three sisters-in-law, Wanda Sweitzer, Leona Crowe and husband John of Cumberland, and Fay Shelton and husband Richard of Staunton, Va.; two brothers-in-law, Francis "Jake" Michaels and wife Lauretta, Victor Michaels and wife Dorothy of Cumberland; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by brother, Homer C. Growden; and brother-in-law, Leo G. Michaels.
The family will receive friends at the Hartzler Funeral Home, 11802 Liberty Road, Libertytown, Md., Thursday, Feb. 22, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 8: 45 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church on Friday, Feb. 23, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Father John D. Dietzenbach, his pastor, officiating.
Interment will be in the St. Peter's Cemetery, Libertytown.

MARILYN I. WRATCHFORD
CUMBERLAND -- Marilyn I. Wratchford, 60, of 50 Browning St., Cumberland, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 11, 1940, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Russell Cooper Shapley and Myrtle Stull (Bailey) Shapley.
Mrs. Wratchford was the unit secretary for the Intensive Care Unit at Memorial Hospital. She was a member of New Covenant United Methodist Church. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, as well as a dedicated friend to all who knew her both at work and in her social life.
She is survived by her husband, Ralph C. Wratchford; two daughters, Lonnie T. Gray and husband Robert, Wiley Ford, W.Va., and Jody M. Mooney and husband Kelly, Cumberland; a sister, Virginia A. Brooks, Cumberland; four very special grandchildren, Robert "Rob" Gray Jr. and fiancé Shelly Rowgh, and Karissa Gray, both of Wiley Ford, Jared Mooney and Jonelle Mooney, both of Cumberland; a niece, Tammy Chucci and son Corey; and two nephews, Charles Brooks Jr. and wife Jill, and Glenn Brooks.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Richard Jewell officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Harold Twigg, Thomas Cessna, Wallace Cunningham, Charles Brooks Jr., Glenn Brooks and Robert Coales. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert D. Gray Sr., Robert "Rob" Gray Jr., Joseph "Kelly" Mooney, Jared Mooney, Bernard Wilson and Johnnie McCoy.
