RUTH C. HARTMAN
KEYSER, W.Va. -- Ruth Cora Hartman, 76, a resident of Heartland of the Keyser Nursing Home since 1992, formerly of 5 South Church St., Keyser, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at the nursing home.
Born on Aug. 9, 1924, at Upper Tract, she was a daughter of the late Walter S. and Pearl (Kimble) Painter. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Glenn Thomas Hartman, D.D.S., on April 3, 1993.
Mrs. Hartman was a homemaker and was a member of the Keyser Church of the Brethren.
Mrs. Hartman was the last surviving member of her immediate family and is survived only by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Dwight Ramsey officiating.
Interment will be in the Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
CARRIE R. WASHINGTON
KEYSER, W.Va. -- Carrie Reva Washington, 95, of Keyser, went to be with her heavenly father on Feb. 24, 2001.
Born on Sept. 18, 1905, in Piedmont, she was the daughter of the late Charles M. and Bessie (Marshall) Campbell. She was also preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Melvin Washington in 1975; five sisters; and one brother.
She is survived by daughters, Bessie R. Brooks and husband Clifton E. Brooks of Keyser, Verda Thomas of Philadelphia, Pa.; and a foster daughter, Laura Galloway of New Jersey. Also surviving are sister-in-law, Mamie Campbell, Ohio; two nieces, Ruth Ellis of California, and Rita Redman of Keyser; five nephews, Stewart Twyman Sr., Frostburg, Md., Charles Campbell, Philadelphia, William Campbell, Keyser, Richard Campbell and Robert Campbell, both of Ohio. She is also survived by 23 grandchildren, Julian (Sandy) Thomas and wife Susan, Robert Thomas and wife Terra, both of Cumberland, Md., Jackie Washington, April Smith and husband Bill, Raeford (Mickey) Brooks Sr. and wife Alta, Ricardo Brooks and wife Vanessa, Victoria Brooks and friend Victor Marshall, Brenda Brooks, Timothy Brooks Sr. and fiancee Renee Moochou, all of Keyser, Clifton Brooks Jr. and wife Barbara, Martinsburg, Willie Williams, Pernell Thomas, Judy Knight and husband Charles, Charles Thomas and wife Kasia, Melba Thomas and Guy Thomas, all of Philadelphia, Kathy Taylor, Virginia, Barbara Jean Washington, Gloria Galloway, New Jersey, Paulette Hollingsworth, Texas, and Rodney Galloway, California; 73 great-grandchildren; 40 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of friends. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Mrs. Washington was a homemaker and a member of the Walden United Methodist Church in Piedmont.
The family will receive friends at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, Piedmont.
Interment will be in Torn Rose cemetery in Keyser.
ELLA S. JONES
OAKLAND -- Ella Summers Jones, 84, of Oakland, died on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at the Cherry Hill Assisted Living Residence in Accident.
She was born on July 4, 1916, in Akron, Ohio, and was a daughter of the late Goff Summers and Mary Lynch Summers.
Mrs. Jones was a graduate of Glenville State College and also attended West Virginia University. She had been a math and science teacher at West Virginia high schools in Tanner, Widen, Rainelle, Glenville, Cheat Lake and Morgantown where she retired in 1973.
In 1985, she and her husband moved to Oakland from Morgantown. Since 1966, they have been summer residents of their cottage on Paradise Point at Deep Creek Lake. Ella was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Oakland. She had started a quilting class in the parish hall there and had taught the art of quilting to more than 200 women throughout Garrett County.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Lloyd M. (Casey) Jones; one son, Judge William Goff Jones and wife Christine of Charlotte, N.C.; one daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Stuart and husband Bruce also of Charlotte; two sisters, Susan Kleis of Sykesville, and Marybell Shaver of Glenville, W.Va.; one brother, Goff Lynch Summers also of Glenville; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
At her request, her body will be cremated.
Memorial services will be held at a later date at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Oakland, and Glenville Presbyterian Church in Glenville.
Should friends desire, memorials may be directed to St. Matthew's Episcopal Church or Hospice of Garrett County.
The Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, is handling the arrangements.
CLARENCE E. GOMER
ZIHLMAN -- Clarence Edward Gomer, 84, of 10633 New Hope Road, Zihlman, died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born on Oct. 8, 1916, in Sand Patch, Pa., he was the son of the late Earl and Edith (Ernst) Gomer.
Mr. Gomer was a retired truck driver for Coddington Lumber Co., Frostburg. He was a member of the Frostburg Church of the Nazarene.
Mr. Gomer is survived by his wife, Mildred Lashbaugh Gomer; one daughter, Darlene Barclay and husband Ray, Cresaptown; five sons, Leroy Gomer and wife Kathleen, Curtis Gomer and wife Linda, George Gomer and wife Carol, Larry Gomer and wife Sandy, Roger Gomer and wife Ann, all of Frostburg; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Monday from 6 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. George Harpold officiating.
Interment will be in the Frostburg Memorial Park.
ELIZABETH B. CATHERMAN
FROSTBURG -- Elizabeth Byrnes Catherman, 76, of Mt. Pleasant Street, Frostburg, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born on March 13, 1924, in Frostburg, she was the daughter of the late Bernard and Gertrude (Dundon) Byrnes. Mrs. Catherman also was preceded in death by one son, Floyd Catherman Jr.; one sister, Anna Byrnes; and three brothers, Lawrence, Terrance and Michael Byrnes.
Mrs. Catherman was a homemaker. She was a member of Saint Michael's Catholic Church, Frostburg, Farrady Post 24 American Legion Auxiliary, Frostburg Moose Lodge 348 Ladies' Auxiliary and Ladies of the Elks Lodge 470, Frostburg.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Floyd W. Catherman Sr.; one daughter, Diane C. Smith and husband Richard H., Westminster; one daughter-in-law, Donna Catherman, Lubbock, Texas; three grandsons, Nick Catherman and wife Betty, Lubbock, Sean Catherman and wife Shelly, Dallas, Texas, and Bryan M. Smith, Westminster; one granddaughter, Kristen D. Smith, Westminster; one great-grandson, Austin Catherman; one brother, Joseph Byrnes, Davis, Calif.; and one sister, Rosemary Crowe, Frostburg.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Fr. Paul Byrnes officiating.
Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park.
GEORGE A. AMATO
RIDGELEY, W.Va. -- George Andrew Amato, 74, of Knobley Estates, Ridgeley, died Monday, Feb. 26, 2001, at Memorial Hospital.
Born on Nov. 4, 1926, in Ridgeley, he was the son of the late Giuseppe and Angelina (Beneduce) Amato. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Sophia Lorraine (White) Amato; a son, Anthony M. Amato Sr.; a grandson, Anthony M. Amato Jr.; three brothers, Anthony Amato, Louis Amato and Patsy Amato; and two sisters, Filomenia Benton and Mary Amato.
Mr. Amato was a member of The Church of the Annunciation, Fort Ashby.
Mr. Amato graduated from Ridgeley High School in 1945 and started his career at Kelly-Springfield in Cumberland, Md., in 1944, working in the mill room until 1971, when he transferred to the Kelly plant in Fayetteville, N.C.
Mr. Amato retired from the Kelly and returned to the Ridgeley area in 1984. Mr. Amato was a special husband, father and grandfather. He was a generous and kind-hearted family man, an avid movie buff and college basketball fan. He was a faithful supporter of the Frankfort Falcons Football team, attending nearly all home games.
George was an avid collector of "you name it-he had it", but more importantly, "if you needed it, he gave it".
He developed a special, unique bond with each of his children and grandchildren. The memories will sustain us now as we say good-bye to our beloved father, grandfather and friend. Always remember, Pap, "you were a damn nice fella." We will never forget you.
Survivors include three daughters, Patricia E. Ross and fiancé Anthony Michael Sabia, Fayetteville, Christine M. Smith and fiancé Roger Harris, Short Gap, and Kathleen M. Henry and husband Thomas, Keyser; eight grandchildren, Gary Bret Ross and wife Lavonne, Wendy Renee Bynum and husband Ricky, Fayetteville, Dr. Melissa Lorraine Lambert and husband Dr. Wayne Lambert of Nashville, Tenn., Daniel Jason Smith and wife Holly of Charleston, David Jeffrey Smith of Morgantown, Jennifer Lynn Smith of Ridgeley, Shawn Christopher Henry of Keyser, and Jeffrey Matthew Henry of Keyser; three great-grandsons, Matthew Bret Ross, Zachary Tyler Ross and Garrett Edward Bynum of Fayetteville; and his special companion, Max the cat.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The Christian Wake Service will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
Mass of a Christian Burial will be celebrated at The Church of the Annunciation, Ft. Ashby, on Thursday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. James Chetock as celebrant.
Serving as pallbearers are Daniel Smith, David Smith, Shawn Henry, Jeff Henry, Ricky Bynum and Bret Ross. Honorary pallbearers will be Joseph Foley Jr. and Pat Foley.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
At Mr. Amato's request, his body will be cremated.
Interment will be held at a later date at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery.
