R. HAROLD FEARER
CUMBERLAND -- R. Harold Fearer, 89, residing at the Allegany County Nursing Home, Cumberland, died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 27, 1911, in Terra Alta, W.Va., he was the son of the late Artie E. Fearer and Jessie P. (Freeland) Fearer. He also was preceded by his wife, Irma E. (Zembower) Fearer, Jan. 20, 1998.
Mr. Fearer was vice president and treasurer of the Cumberland Steel Company. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where he was very active as a former Vestry member, coach of the church's basketball league and Sunday school teacher, a member of the Ali Ghan Shrine Club, Ritualistic Unit, East Gate Lodge #216 A.F. & A.M. York and Scottish Rite Bodies, National Association of Accountants, Hagerstown Club, Antioch Commandery No. 6 Knights Templar, Salem Chapter #18, R.A.M.; former member of Board of Directors of DeMolay, and Board of Directors of the National Lutheran Home, Washington, D.C.
He is survived by a son, the Rev. Ronald Fearer and wife Clover Jane, Waynesboro, Pa.; two grandchildren, Daniel J. Fearer and wife Jennifer, Mesa, Ariz., and Ronda Sprague and husband Michael, Greencastle, Pa.; five great-grandchildren, Samantha and Jonathan Fearer, Stephen, Seth and Sammuel Sprague; four brothers, William J. Fearer, Terra Alta, W. Ralph Fearer, Palm Coast, Fla., Jack E. Fearer, Baltimore, and Charles L. Fearer, Destin, Fla.; and two sisters, Louella Bourckel, Baltimore, and Mary Wood, Yarmouth, Mass.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. East Gate Lodge #216 will conduct a memorial service at the funeral home on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m.
Services will be conducted at St. Paul's Lutheran Church on Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. John J. Duffus and the Rev. Donald F. Sause officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Family requests that memorials be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or the activity fund at Allegany County Nursing Home.
RICHARD E. GRUBB
FLINTSTONE -- Richard Ellis Grubb, 50, of 12100 John Stewart Road, Flintstone, died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Nov. 8, 1950, in Cumberland, he was the son of Josephine Mae (Smith) Grubb, Flintstone, and the late Richard Eugene Grubb.
Mr. Grubb was a plumber for RYCO Corporation. An Army veteran of Vietnam, he was a member of Chapter 172, Vietnam Veterans of America, Fort Cumberland Post #13 American Legion, and Henry Hart Post 1411 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Besides his mother, he is survived by a son, Matthew Richard Grubb and his mother, Judith Bower of Wauwatosa, Wis.; two brothers, James Grubb, Flintstone, and Alan C. Grubb, Knoxville, Tenn.; three sisters, Sandra J. Livingston and husband Robert, The Woodlands, Texas, Bonnie L. Fields and husband Mark, Little Orleans, and Carrie Jo Detrick, Tom's River, N.J.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Robert Smith officiating.
Interment will be in the Maryland Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap.
Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 172, Honor Guard.
JOHN B. MCFARLAND JR.
FORT ASHBY, W.Va. -- John Bruce McFarland Jr., 78, of Rt. #2, Box 289, Fort Ashby, died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born July 12, 1922, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late John Bruce McFarland Sr. and Myrtle (Welsh) McFarland.
Mr. McFarland Jr. was a salesman for Home Beneficial Life Insurance Company and former owner of McFarland's Auto Shop. He was a very active member of the Melvin United Methodist Church, where he served as an usher and greeter. His tour of duty with the U.S. Army in World War II serving with the 29th Division of the Big Red One on the first wave of the invasion on Omaha Beach, D-Day, June 6, 1944, exemplified his abilities as a top soldier, having received three Bronze Stars, two Purple Hearts and while in St. Loew, France, he was credited for single handedly capturing 14 enemy soldiers. He was a member of Henry Hart Post 1411 Veterans of Foreign Wars and served as Chaplain of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #2 for 14 years. He also was a member of Fraternal Order of Elks, Lodge #63. He was a founder of the Industrial Golf League of the Fort Cumberland Golf Course. An avid sportsman, golfer and hunter, he lived for his family. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Waneta C. (Davis) McFarland, Fort Ashby; three sons, Ron McFarland and friend Bonnie Boswell, Oldtown, Md., Kenny McFarland and wife Shari, Fort Ashby, and John McFarland III and fiancé Mary O'Baker, Cumberland; two sisters, Georgie Appel and Jessie Sipes, both of Cumberland; seven grandchildren, Tina Shumaker, Nathan McFarland, Bryan McFarland, Amy Pownall, Sarah McFarland, Justin McFarland and Joshua McFarland; and five great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Dan Taylor and the Rev. Tim McGregor officiating.
Interment will be in the Maryland Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap.
Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the combined veterans honor guard.
JOYCE E. HILL
SHORT GAP, W.Va. -- Joyce Elaine Hill, 56, of Short Gap, formerly of Rawlings, Md., died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Born on Feb. 10, 1945, in Ripley, she was the daughter of the late Bryan Jennings and Ada Ethel (Showalter) Lockhart. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Freddie Lockhart.
Mrs. Hill was a homemaker. She attended Zion United Church of Christ, Frostburg. She was a ceramic expert and a 1963 graduate of Belington High School, Belington.
Surviving are her husband, Ron Hill; three daughters, Roni Joyce Eckard and husband Eric, Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Robin Lynne Kerr and husband Jeff, Cumberland, Renee Elizabeth Bean and husband Jimmy, Rawlings; two sisters, Betty Lou Harman and husband Dexell, Clarksburg, Judy Curtis and husband Jim, Junior; one brother, Jennings Bryan Lockhart and wife Wilma, Sutton; and seven grandchildren, Jason, Carrie, Stephanie, Michelle and Erica Eckhard, and Hillary and Greg Kerr.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Cresaptown, Md., Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Diane Smith officiating.
Interment will be in Fort Ashby Cemetery, Fort Ashby.
The family requests that contributions be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
JAMES G. NEAL
LITTLE ORLEANS -- James G. Neal, 67, of Evergreen Hill Drive SE, Little Orleans, died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born on May 27, 1933, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Ceval Aaron and Beulah Smith Neal; and husband of the late Marjorie E. Strickland Neal, who passed away on Dec. 22, 1990.
He was retired from the U.S. Army having served two tours in Korea and three tours in Vietnam. He also had been employed with Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, Pa., for 14 years. He was Protestant.
He is survived by two daughters, Jimmie L. Neal, Little Orleans, and Donna (Neal) Birchfield of Baltimore; one sister, Joan Bassler of Baltimore; one brother, Ceval L. Neal, Gaithersburg; three grandchildren, Courtney and Shannon Birchfield and Cari Neal-Harden.
He was also preceded in death by two children, Robin Annette Neal and James G. Neal II.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock.
