HAZEL E. JOHNSON
FROSTBURG -- Hazel E. Johnson, 82, of 75 Meshach Frost Village, Frostburg, died Thursday, March 1, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born on Sept. 30, 1918, in Frostburg, she was the daughter of the late Malcolm and Hazel E. (Thomas) Layman Sr. Mrs. Johnson was also preceded in death by her husband, James H. Johnson; and one brother, Malcolm Layman Jr.
Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker. She was Presbyterian by faith.
She is survived by one daughter, Nancy J. Duckworth, Frostburg; one son, James M. Johnson, Gaithersburg; one half sister, Mildred Davis, Westernport; two grandsons, David W. Harris and wife Stephanie, Springfield, W.Va., and Jimmy H. Johnson and wife Karen, Granger, Ind.; four granddaughters, Tracy L. Watkins and husband Mark, Grantsville, Karen R. McKenzie and husband Brent, Cumberland, Stephanie A. Fredricksen and husband Erik, Martinsburg, W.Va., and Carrie A. Valdez and husband Matt, Germantown; eight great-grandchildren, Robbie Harris, Davey Harris, Dana Harris, Zachary Watkins, Carly McKenzie, Danielle Johnson, Bradley Johnson and Brianna Valdez.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. T. William Preston officiating.
Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Mark Watkins, Brent McKenzie, Harold Baker, Jimmy Johnson, Erik Fredricksen and Matt Valdez.
NICOLENA F. MILBRADA
CUMBERLAND -- Nicolena Frances Milbrada, 81, of Cumberland, died Wednesday at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born on April 14, 1919, in Belington, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Mabel (Larsen) Coontz. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Edward John Milbrada in 1995.
Mrs. Milbrada was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Cresap Chapter, D.A.R., and the Colonial Dames. Previously, Mrs. Milbrada had been active with the Girls Scouts through the Shawnee Council.
Survivors include her daughter, Martha Anne Milbrada, Cumberland; her son, Edward John Milbrada, West Chester, Ohio; two sisters, Gladys Channell, Elkins, W.Va., and Florence Spivy, Greensboro, N.C.; and two grandchildren, Lisa Milbrada and Gary Milbrada, both of West Chester.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
The Christian Wake service will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 8:45 p.m.
Mass of a Christian Burial will be celebrated at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Vernon Busch, OFM, Cap., as celebrant.
Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

FORT ASHBY, W.Va. -- John Bruce McFarland Jr., 78, of Rt. #2, Box 289, Fort Ashby, died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Dan Taylor and the Rev. Tim McGregor officiating.
Interment will be in the Maryland Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap.
Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the combined veterans honor guard.
Pallbearers will be Kenny Wilmont, Harold Appel, John Appel, David Andrews, Herb Sarver, Bryan McFarland, Justin McFarland and Nathan McFarland. Honorary pallbearers will be Leo Appel, Steve Crawford and Joshua McFarland.
MARGARET M. LYNCH
CUMBERLAND -- Margaret Mary Lynch, 83, of Cumberland, died Friday, March 2, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Dec. 15, 1917, in Ocean, she was the daughter of the late John and Frances (Grabenstein) Briner. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Thomas Lynch Sr.; and one brother, Leo Briner.
Mrs. Lynch was a homemaker, a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, and the Christian Mothers. She was devoted to her family, especially her grandchildren.
Surviving are one daughter, Mary Frances Lynch, with whom she resided; one son, Richard T. Lynch Jr. and wife Isabel, Sterling, Va.; two sisters, Kathleen Wolz, LaVale, and Lenora Schneider and husband Frederick, Meadville, Pa.; four brothers, John Briner and wife Peg, Levittown, Pa., Richard Briner, LaVale, William Briner and wife Mary Ann, Cumberland, and James Briner and wife Judy, Thomasville, Pa.; two grandsons, Sean P. Lynch and Michael T. Lynch; and sister-in-law, Mary Dorothy Briner, Baltimore.

CHICAGO, Ill. -- Larry C. Gray, 59, died Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, in Chicago.

BERNADETTE M. MALLOY
FREDERICK -- Bernadette Marie "Big Dette" Malloy, 64, of Winding Ridge Way, Frederick, formerly of Mount Savage, died Thursday, March 1, 2001, at her residence.
Born Sept. 8, 1936, in Mount Savage, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret (Murray) Malloy. Miss Malloy also was preceded in death by her three brothers and four sisters.
Miss Malloy was a retired office supervisor for the Bell Atlantic Telephone Company. She was a member of Our Lady of Lord's Catholic Church, Chevy Chase.
She is survived by one daughter, Rosemarie Deffenbaugh and husband Darren, Frederick; two grandsons, Bradley and Owen Deffenbaugh, both of Frederick; three brothers, Leo Malloy, James Malloy and William Malloy; four sisters, Kathleen Wall, Rosalee Bennett, Rita Malloy and Mary Jo Brailer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sister Joan Minella, S.S.N.D., will recite evening prayers at the funeral home on Sunday at 8:30 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Father Gary Orr as celebrant.
Interment will be in the St. Patrick's Parish Cemetery, Mount Savage.

ROBERT E. BARNES
FORT ASHBY, W.Va. -- Robert E. "Bob" Barnes, 49, of Fort Ashby, died Thursday, March 1, 2001, at the Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser.
Born on Oct. 19, 1951, in Cumberland, Md., he was a son of the late Woodrow Wilson and Dora M. (Bosley) Barnes. He also was preceded in death by an infant daughter.
Mr. Barnes was employed as a transport driver with Stroehmann Bakery and Roadway Express for 20 years. More recently, he was employed as a school bus driver with the Mineral County Board of Education. He was a 1969 graduate of Fort Ashby High School and he attended the Piedmont Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and was a life member of Post #6667, VFW, Fort Ashby.
Surviving are his special "Mom and Pop," Charles and Mildred Smith, Fort Ashby; his wife of 23 years, Claudia E. (Sisler) Barnes; one son, Justin R. Barnes, Burlington; three daughters, Tara L. Barnes, Ridgeley, Bobbie Jo Sperry and husband Cory, Morgantown, and Laura A. Barnes, at home; three step-daughters, Tami Haynal, Cumberland, Kimberley Brown and husband James, Fort Ashby, and Melissa Long, Fort Ashby; two brothers, Howard B. Barnes, Harrisonburg, Va., and Clyde S. Barnes, Fort Ashby; four sisters, Bernadine M. Cottrell, Athens, Ohio, Catherine E. Jeffrey, Fort Ashby, Donna M. Nichols, Romney, and Betty R. Barnes, Fort Ashby; one granddaughter, Skilyn Barnes; six step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Tom Brackett officiating.
Private committal services will be held at the convenience of the family.
