REV. LAUREAN R. SMITH
MOOREFIELD, W.Va. -- The Rev. Laurean Rufus Smith, 78, of Moorefield, passed this life Thursday, March 1, 2001, at his residence.
The son of the late Rufus E. and Ella Mae (Eigenbrode) Smith, he was born Aug. 12, 1922, in Waynesboro, Pa. He also was preceded in death by one daughter; one son; one sister; and one brother.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Janet (Benedict) Smith; one daughter, Patricia E. Shoemaker and husband Kenny of Old Fields; one sister, Amy Royer and one brother, Sanford Smith, both of Waynesboro; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Smith was a graduate of Bethany Bible Training School in Chicago, Ill., founder of the Moorefield Church of the Brethren in 1957, and pastor there for over 31 years. Then he was pastor of White Pine and Kelley Chapel Churches of the Brethren from 1988 to 2000. He was very active in the West Marva District Conference, served 12 years in the Industrial Chaplain Ministry, 14 years as a Bridgewater Home Trustee, and 10 years in the West Virginia Council of Churches. He was Chairman of the Hardy County Chapter of the Red Cross from 1958 to 1998, and a member of Co. #46 Volunteer Fire Department for 15 years.
The family will receive friends at the Moorefield Church of the Brethren on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the Moorefield Church of the Brethren on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Harold Garber, the Rev. Steve Abe and the Rev. Allen Murlin officiating.
Burial will follow at the Olivet Cemetery.

PHILIPPI, W.Va. -- Sarah Elizabeth Mauzy, infant daughter of Dr. Mike and Shari Simmons Mauzy of Philippi, passed away Feb. 27, 2001, at the Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown.
Besides her parents, she is survived by her maternal grandmother, Sandra Patrick Simmons of Elizabeth; maternal great-grandmother, Mary Briggs Simmons of Belpre, Ohio; maternal great-grandparents, Betty and Clay Patrick Jr. of Elizabeth; paternal grandparents, John Michael and Carolyn Louise Mauzy of Ridgeley; paternal great-grandmother, Mildred Richmond of Jenison, Mich.; four uncles, Brian D. Simmons of Martinsburg, Brent D. Simmons of Elizabeth, Christopher Mauzy of Bellaire, Md., and Philip Mauzy of Ridgeley.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Roger D. Simmons; maternal great-grandfather, William Clark Simmons, paternal great-grandfather, Donald Richmond; and paternal great-grandparents, Edith and Carl Mauzy.
Private family graveside services will be held at the Limestone Cemetery, Rockport, Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Kristin Butts officiating.

JOSEPH C. WEEKS
OAKLAND -- Joseph Crane Weeks, 66, of Rocky Point, N.C., formerly of Oakland, died Thursday, March 1, 2001, at his home after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Mr. Weeks was born July 19, 1934, in Garrett County, and was the son of the late Raymond L. and Gladys Crane Weeks.
He was employed in the insurance industry for 23 years as an agent for State Farm Insurance Company and as a regional sales manager for Federal Kemper Insurance Company. In later years, he was the owner of an after market auto and truck parts business in Hagerstown from where he retired in 1996. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of Rocky Point Baptist Church, Rocky Point.
Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Joann Hollen Weeks; son, Joseph C. Weeks II of Rocky Point; daughter, Jennifer C. Hoyt of Pinellas Park, Fla.; sisters, Marjorie W. DeBerry of Cocoa, Fla., Jo Ann Dodge, his twin sister, of Finksburg, and Rayma Jean Weeks of Mountain Lake Park.
His brother, Ralph H. Weeks, preceded him in death.
The family will receive friends at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral service will be conducted in the Durst Funeral Home Chapel, Oakland, on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Donald Wilson officiating.
Burial will follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Oakland.

FRANKLIN T. TWIGG JR.
RIDGELEY, W.Va. -- Franklin Thomas "Tom" Twigg Jr., 50, of Short Gap, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Friday, March 2, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Born Aug. 27, 1950, in Cumberland, he was the son of Freda (Bloss) Twigg, current resident of Dawn View Manor Nursing Home, Fort Ashby, and the late Franklin Thomas Twigg Sr. Mr. Twigg was raised by Nellie (Twigg) Long, current resident of Short Gap, and the late Robert L. Long. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie S. (Arnold) Twigg, Aug. 8, 1993.
Tom was a police officer for the city of Winchester, Va., chief deputy for Mineral County Sheriff's Department, Corporal at Bland, Va., Detention Center, and Corporal at Stafford, Va., Detention Center. He received a special recognition award for dedicated and loyal service as corrections officer at Stafford Detention Center Camp 21 from Oct. 1, 1985, to the present. He was a 1969 graduate of Ridgeley High School. In high school, he played football and was the WV State discus thrower.
In addition to his mother and Nellie Long, surviving are three sons, Matthew A. Twigg, Fairmont, F. Thomas Twigg III, Tucson, Ariz., and Charles J. Twigg and fiancé Cassandra Sylvia, Tucson; two former wives, Brenda Moreland, Cumberland, and Mary Lou Daniels, Tucson; three sisters, Freda Twigg Patrick, Bluespring, Mo., Rebecca Jane Moreland and husband Ronald, Ridgeley, and Benita Diane Clauz and husband Richard, Slanesville; one granddaughter, Monique Twigg; special aunt, Mary Twigg Grady, Ridgeley; nephews, Brian Patrick, Brock and Brent Moreland; and one niece, Lisa Patrick. Also surviving are several special aunts, uncles and cousins.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Emmanuel House of Prayer on Wednesday at 2 p.m. with Pastor Jimmy Glass and Pastor Benny W. Smith officiating. Friends will be received at the church one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in the Mt. Olive Cemetery, Oldtown, Md.
Pallbearers will be Edward L. Twigg, Robert L. Twigg, Harold D. Twigg, Michael Grady, B. Mark Smith and Brent Moreland. Honorary pallbearers will be Daniel Burns, Ray Moreland, Ronald E. Moreland and Samuel Smith.
Tom was known as a fun-loving guy, who enjoyed life and was very much loved by his family and many friends. He will be greatly missed.

BETTY L. CUNNINGHAM
ELLERSLIE -- Betty L. Cunningham, 77, of Ellerslie, died Friday, March 2, 2001, at the War Memorial Hospital, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.
Born Dec. 26, 1923, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Robert I. and Zella Marie (Dibert) Izzett. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Howard W. Cunningham, in 1995; and four brothers, Kenneth, Ivan, Charles and James Izzett.
Mrs. Cunningham worked for many years at Crystal Laundry and was a former employee of the Celanese Corporation. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, attended Ellerslie United Methodist Church, and was past president of the Ellerslie Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary for 16 years.
Surviving are one daughter, Carol A. Willison and husband William E., Hancock; one brother, Robert Izzett, Hyndman, Pa.; one aunt, Florence Dibert, Cumberland; and three grandchildren, Jason A. Willison, Jeffrey L. Willison and Jennifer L. Willison, all of Hancock.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. with the Rev. Rebecca Vardiman officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
