MARY A. DEEM
Mary Alice Deem, 60, Meyersdale, Pa., formerly of Oakland, died Sunday, June 27, 1999, at Kyle’s Personal Care Home, Meyersdale.
Born June 26, 1939, in Jennings, she was the daughter of Mary (Ross) Johnson, Grantsville, and the late Raymond Leininger. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Carroll Deem.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by two sons, David Deem, Orlando, Fla., and Randy Livengood, Oakland; one daughter, Bonnie Livengood, Oakland; one brother, Melvin Leininger, Grantsville; and a half-brother, Cecil Stein, Grantsville.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, where a service was conducted Saturday, July 2, with the Rev. Ross Glotfelty officiating. Interment was in the Grantsville Cemetery.
MARIA J. DISIMONE
Maria J. DiSimone, 96, Cumberland, formerly of Oakland, died Wednesday, July 7, 1999, at the Devlin Manor Nursing Home, Cumberland.
Born March 16, 1903, in Ponta Caro, Italy, she was a daughter of the late John and Concetta (DeTraglia) Caporuscio. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Antonio DiSimone, in 1971.
She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Oakland, and St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Cumberland. She was the oldest member of the McVeigh Holy Cross Club, Oakland.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary Jane 'Toni' Eshleman, Cumberland; two sons, Joseph DiSimone, Oakland, and Jerry DiSimone, Ohio; one sister, Anna Caporuscio, Italy; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandsons.
Friends will be received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Oakland, on Saturday, July 10, at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Fr. Don Parson as celebrant. Interment will be in Garrett County Memorial Gardens, Oakland.
A Christian Wake service will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 3 p.m.
MARY J. FRIEND
Mary J. Friend, 80, Oakland, died Sunday, July 4, 1999, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born July 14, 1918, in Crellin, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Feebie (Savage) Sowers. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Paul E. Friend Sr.
Survivors include eight daughters, Margie Strawser, Aurora, W.Va., Jeanie McGinnis, Oakland, Patty Alexander, Crellin, Barbara Losh and Irene Thomas, both of Terra Alta, W.Va., Charlotte Metz, Friendsville, Darlene Roy, Corinth, W.Va., and Sharon Wilson, Oakland; two sons, Charles E. Friend and Paul E. Friend Jr., both of Oakland; 26 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, where a service was conducted Wednesday, July 7, with the Rev. Paul Poland officiating. Interment was in the Ashby Cemetery.
R. FLORENCE HARRIS
Reda Florence Harris, 93, Oakland, formerly of College Park, died Monday, July 5, 1999, at the Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home, Oakland.
Born Aug. 4, 1905, in Thornwood, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Michael E. and Amanda (Wilt) Long. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin H. Harris, in 1951, and four grandchildren.
She was a retired licensed practical nurse, and worked at hospitals in Crownsville, Pa., and Camarillo, Calif. She was Baptist by faith.
Survivors include four sons, George T. Perrine, Loch Lynn, Edwin E. Perrine, Fountain Valley, Calif., Benjamin S. Harris, Annapolis, and Larry W. Harris, Camarillo; four daughters, Maxine J. Reddy, Baja, Mexico, Shirley A. Smaby, Camarillo, Ellen Gae Ward, Thomas, W.Va., and Rosalie Smith, College Park; 24 grandchildren; and 39 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Friday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A service will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, July 10, at 11 a.m., with Pastor Donald Wilson officiating. Interment will be in Garrett County Memorial Gardens, Oakland.
MILLIE L. JEWELL
Millie Louise Jewell, 79, Cresaptown, died Thursday, July 1, 1999, at the Devlin Manor Nursing Home, Cumberland.
Born May 7, 1920, in Kitzmiller, she was a daughter of the late James and Nellie (Lombard) Pratt. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles H. Jewell.
She was a retired manager at Woolworth Restaurant, LaVale. She was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Cresaptown, and the Cresaptown Eagles Ladies Auxiliary.
Surviving are five sons, James T. Jewell, Williamsport, George W. Jewell, Cresaptown, Robert Jewell, Gore, Va., David Jewell, Cresaptown, and Michael E. Jewell, Cresaptown; one brother, Thomas Pratt, Kitzmiller; one sister, Helen Brown, Bunker Hill, W.Va.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

RITA M. KEENER
Rita Margaret (Ayersman) Keener, 75, Aurora, W.Va., died Wednesday, July 7, 1999, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born March 20, 1924, in Howesville, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Herman Robert and Margaret Eva (Wright) Ayersman. She was also preceded in death by her husband, George Max Keener, in 1971; four brothers, James R. Ayersman, Robert J. Ayersman, Carl E. Ayersman, and Howard N. Ayersman; and one grandson.
Survivors include two daughters, Kathern Diann Keener, Cheat Lake, W.Va., and Donna Grace Keener, Aurora; three sons, Ronald David Keener, Newark, Ohio, Max Allen Keener, Morgantown, W.Va., and Bradley Mark Keener, Rowlesburg, W.Va.; one sister, Sarah E. Ayersman, Cleveland, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Browning Funeral Home, Kingwood, W.Va., from 4 to 9 p.m. today, Thursday, and from 9 until 11 a.m., the time of the service, on Friday, July 9, with Fr. Jerome McKenna officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
DIANE K. MAMICH
Diane K. (Cessna) Mamich, 40, Frostburg, died Wednesday, June 30, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Nov. 12, 1958, in Frostburg, she was a daughter of Herbert 'Buzz' Cessna Jr. and Delores (Stott) Cessna.
She was a 1976 graduate of Beall High School and was employed at Unitel as a customer service representative.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Thomas Mamich; one daughter, Andrea Mamich, Frostburg; one sister, Vickie Mazer, Frostburg; and her paternal grandmother, Edith Cessna, Cumberland.
Friends were received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, LaVale, where a service was conducted Saturday, July 3, with the Rev. Fred Cutajar officiating. Interment was in St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Grantsville.

KARL Z. MORGAN
Dr. Karl Z. Morgan, 91, Oak Ridge, Tenn., died Tuesday, June 8, 1999, in Oak Ridge.
His grandfather, the late J.B. Shoup, was a circuit rider Lutheran minister in Garrett County, who was responsible for the founding of several churches in the county. The Rev. Shoup was a pastor of the Bittinger parish from 1883-85, and again from 1904-07. Dr. Morgan still has relatives in the Bittinger area.
He was a founder of the field of health physics, the science of human health and radiation exposure. He was a member of the metallurgical laboratory staff at the University of Chicago in 1943 when Enrico Fermi and other physicists in the Manhattan Project were developing the world’s first atomic bomb there. After joining the project, Dr. Morgan was sent to a then secret location in Tennessee where uranium was processed for the bombs that were dropped two years later on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, in the closing days of World War II.
After the war he remained for 29 years at the plant, which became the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and was director of health physics at the plant until his retirement.
He founded the Health Physics Society and was its first president. He also founded the Journal of the Health Physics Society and was its first editor.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Lee (McCoy) Morgan; two sons, Karl Morgan Jr., Oak Ridge, and Dr. Eric Lee Morgan, Cookeville, Tenn.; two daughters, Joan Elen Morgan, Indian Rocks Beach, Fla., and Diana Morgan Matthews, Cookeville; one sister, Lois Morgan Johnson, West End, N.C.; four grandsons; and one great-grandson.
CLARENCE R. MURPHY
Word has been received of the April 24, 1999, death of Clarence R. Murphy, 84, Houston, Texas.
Born Nov. 24, 1915, at Long Stretch, he was a son of the late C. Arthur and Corlista (Groghan) Murphy. He was also preceded in death by six brothers.
He was a 1933 graduate of Grantsville High School. He had worked at the Celanese Plant in Cumberland until 1946 and was then transferred to the Celanese Lab in Corpus Christi, Texas, as a chemical engineer. He joined Warren Petroleum in Tulsa, Okla., in 1947. Gulf Oil transferred the Warren Lab workers to Pittsburgh in 1958, and in 1975 he was transferred to Gulf’s new polymer lab in Houston. In the 31 years at Warren/Gulf, he was awarded 30 patents.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Eva (Miller) Murphy; two sons, David Murphy, Corpus Christi, and Dennis Murphy, Southlake, Texas; two daughters, Carol Brown, Laurel, Mont., and Cindy Bartos, Houston; one sister, Sarah Shanholtz, Cumberland; two brothers, Paul Murphy, Michigan, and George Murphy, Zilhman; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, July 10, at 10 a.m., at the Mount Zion United Methodist Church, Long Stretch, with the Rev. Steven Lightner officiating. Interment will follow in the family plot in Mount Zion Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials take the form of contributions to the Mount Zion United Methodist Church, c/o Rev. Steven Lightner, 2704 Green Lantern Road, Frostburg, MD 21532.

STANLEY D. NINE
Stanley David Nine, 57, Terra Alta, W.Va., died Saturday, July 3, 1999, at his home.
Born Oct. 11, 1941, in Terra Alta, he was a son of Ellen Marie (DeWitt) Pifer, Terra Alta, and the late Forest Dailey Nine. He was also preceded in death by one son, Ronald Allen Nine.
He was a member of the Salem Church of the Brethren, Bruceton Mills, W.Va.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 34 years, Karen Sue Nine; one son, Stacy David Nine, McHenry; one daughter, Jacqueline (Nine) Bell, Rowlesburg, W.Va.; one brother, Fred Nine, Terra Alta; and his stepfather, George Harlan Pifer, Terra Alta.
Friends were received at the Arthur H. Wright Funeral Home, Terra Alta, where a service was conducted Monday, July 5, with the Rev. Donald Savage officiating. Interment was in the Terra Alta Cemetery.
HUEY E. RODEHEAVER
Huey E. Rodeheaver, 75, Charlestown, died Wednesday, July 7, 1999, at Union Hospital in Cecil County.
Born May 9, 1924, in Sang Run, he was a son of the late Leslie and Grace (McCrobie) Rodeheaver. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Irene G. Rodeheaver, on Oct. 16, 1998.
He was retired employee for Nelco-Tier, and worked in Saudi Arabia, Africa, and the Azores. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a member of the Truth and Life Center in North East.
Survivors include three daughters, Judy I. Perez, Wilmington, Del., Bonnie K. Nibert, Waverly, Ohio, and Sharon A. Rinehart, Perryville; two sons, Huey E. Rodeheaver Jr., Warrenton, Mo., and Larry E. Rodeheaver, Crimora, Va.; one brother, Lonnie Rodeheaver, Deer Park; two sisters, Martha Goehringer, Accident, and Betty Phelps, Savage; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received July 10, from 10 until 11 a.m., the time of the service, with the Rev. Wayne Trout officiating. Interment will be in Harford Memorial Gardens, Aldino, with full military honors accorded by members of American Legion Mason Post 194 of Rising Sun.
