CATHERINE V. MONGOLD
WILEY FORD, W.Va. -- Catherine "Kate" Virginia Mongold, 92, of Wiley Ford, passed away on Saturday, March 10, 2001, at the Cumberland Nursing Home, Cumberland, Md.
Born in Cumberland, on Nov. 22, 1908, she was the daughter of the late James Henry Newlen and Sarah Ann (Fleming) Newlen. She was also preceded in death by brothers, Marshall and Charles "Mike" Newlen; and a sister, Ann Keplinger.
She was a former employee of the Cumberland Glass Factory and the B&O Railroad Y.M.C.A. She was a member of the Wiley Ford Church of the Brethren for 74 years, past treasury of Women's Fellowship of the church, former Sunday school teacher and Bible school teacher and a lifetime Deacon of the church. She was also a member of the Wiley Ford Ladies Auxiliary of the Fire Company and a past treasurer of the Fire Department.
Surviving are her husband, Charles Hugh Mongold; one sister, Sara Spriggs and husband Ernie, LaVale, Md.; one sister-in-law, Sarah Bennett and husband Alvin, Wiley Ford; two special nieces, Shelby Grogg and husband Mason, Wiley Ford, and Esther Winterstein, Short Gap; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Wiley Ford Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Paul Dietz and the Rev. Benny Brakeall officiating.
The body will be taken to the church at 12 noon.
Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be nephews, Randy Spriggs, Jeff Grogg, Steve Grogg, Jim Bennett, Matt Bennett and Chuck Mongold.
BRENDA H. MOORE
CUMBERLAND -- Brenda H. Moore, 51, of 936 Seton Drive, Cumberland, formerly of Keyser, W.Va., died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at her residence.
Born on Oct. 14, 1949, in Cumberland, she was a daughter of the late Carl R. and Dora Mildred (Mauk) Hamrick. She was also preceded in death by her second husband, Ronald E. Moore on July 14, 1994; and by a sister, Sue Welch.
Mrs. Moore was employed as a customer service representative for Care First Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maryland. She was a 1967 graduate of Hampshire High School and was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Keyser, and was a lifetime member of the International Order of Rainbow for Girls.
Surviving are her husband, William J. Roberts; one daughter, Roann Leggett, Keyser; two sons, Ronald L. Moore, Elkins, W.Va., and Scott A. Moore, Pittsburgh, Pa.; one brother, Richard A. Hamrick, Elk Garden, W.Va.; one sister, Rue H. Worles, Romney, W.Va.; four grandchildren, Ronald L. Moore Jr., Shawn Moore, Ashley Wyatt and Zachary d'Hedouville; seven nephews; one niece; and two grand nieces.
Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Wednesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Samuel Starling Jr. and the Rev. Calvin McCutcheon officiating.
Interment will be in the Indian Mound Cemetery, Romney.
JOHN T. WAGGONER
KEYSER, W.Va. -- John Thomas Waggoner, 73, of Route 5, Box 10, Keyser, died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at the Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser.
Born on Dec. 8, 1927, at Lawrenceville, Ill., he was a son of the late John E. and Opal (Bye) Waggoner. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Gwendolyn Enid (Griffith) Waggoner in 1982.
Mr. Waggoner was a retired superintendent of the United States Senate document room in Washington, D.C., with 30 years of service. He was Methodist by faith, attended the University of Illinois, and was a 50 year member of the Wm. R. Singleton-Hope Lebanon Lodge #7, Master Masons of Washington D.C.
Surviving are his wife, Helen O. Thompson Waggoner; one son, Kenneth Waggoner and wife Renee, Surfside Beach, S.C.; one daughter, Shannon Parlett, Edgewood, Md.; one stepson, James F. Thompson and wife Cheri, Fort Belvoir, Va.; one brother, Don Waggoner and wife Linda, Lawrenceville, Ill.; one sister, Anne Wagner and husband Hershell, West Columbia, Texas; one aunt, Clara Waggoner, Lawrenceville; three grandchildren, Tabitha Waggoner, Charleston, S.C., Jessica and Rachel Waggoner, Surfside Beach; one step grandson, Tait Thompson, Fort Belvoir; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Interment will be in the Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser. Graveside Masonic rites will be accorded by Davis Lodge #51, A.F. & A.M., Keyser.

DONALD E. HOLTZMAN
CUMBERLAND -- Donald Elbert Burns Holtzman, 84, of Cumberland, left his earthly life to continue a better life in his heavenly home on Friday, March 9, 2001. He died at the Cumberland Nursing Center.
Born on Oct. 30, 1916, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Edgar and Carrie (Wilson) Holtzman. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Vesta (Pebble) Holtzman; a brother, Beverly Holtzman; and a sister, Virginia Linn.
Donald graduated from the University of Maryland with a teaching degree, and was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.
He is survived by two brothers, Paul Holtzman and wife Peg and Leonard Holtzman and wife Juanita, all of Cumberland; and his twin sister, Dorothy Fleek and husband Elmer of Fort Ashby, W.Va. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends were received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Sunday, March 11, 2001, from 1 until 4 p.m.
Services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel Monday, March 12, 2001, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Dana Umbel of Ft. Ashby Independent Baptist Church officiating.
Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland.
Following the funeral, a gathering of friends and family will be held in the Banquet Room of the Park and Dine West Restaurant, Mechanic Street, Cumberland.
ELSIE M. BLAIR
MIDLAND -- Elsie Mae Blair, 64, of 14610 New Georges Creek Road, Midland, died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, after an unsuccessful fight with cancer.
Born in Barton on May 10, 1936, she was the daughter of Ruby (Winters) Gattens of Barton and the late Floyd M. Gattens. A sister, Katherine Elizabeth "Kitty" Gattens-Snyder also preceded her in death.
Elsie graduated from Valley High School in 1953. She attended Frostburg State College, where she received a B.A. degree in Art and English and a M.A. degree in Education. Prior to entering college, Elsie was employed as a secretary at Westvaco and Allegany Ballistics Laboratories. Her teaching career included Art and English at Bishop Walsh High School, and Art at Beall and Westmar High Schools before retiring from the Allegany County Public School System in 1995. Upon retirement, she continued her education career as an instructor at Frostburg State University in the Art Education Department.
Elsie was a member of the Antique Doll Club, and enjoyed collecting and restoring antique baby dolls as a hobby. She also had a great interest in acquiring and refinishing antique furniture for her home. She was an accomplished musician, whereby, she was an active member and played piano as a soloist with local bands that provided musical performances in a various array of social and entertainment settings throughout the Tri-State area. She was a member of the Midland Grace Methodist Church, and the Bethlehem Chapter #14 Order of Eastern Star.
In addition to her mother, Ruby Gattens, she is survived by her husband, Donald Blair; a son, Gregory Blair of Falling Waters, W.Va.; a daughter, Barbara Blair-Hrabowski of Mount Airy; a brother, Gary Gattens of Hershey, Pa., and five grandchildren.
At Elsie's request, her body was cremated.
A memorial service will be held at the Boal Memorial Chapel, Barton, on Saturday, March 17, 2001, at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends at the Chapel from 1 to 2 p.m.
Immediately following the service, the family extends an invitation to join them at a reception to celebrate the life of Elsie at the Barton United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Grace United Methodist Church, Midland, MD, or the Western Maryland Health Systems Hospice Unit and Services.
