THOMAS C. STAKEM
FROSTBURG -- Thomas C. Stakem, 84, of 14816 Paradise St., SW, Frostburg, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at his residence.
Born in Midland, on Aug. 20, 1916, he was the son of the late James B. and Teresa (Sharpe) Stakem. He was also preceded in death by his wife and mother of his children, Anna Mae (Leake) Stakem; his second wife, Rose McGowan Stakem; six brothers, Jerome, Clement, Peter, Lawrence, Joseph and Paul Stakem; two sisters, Nellie Milford and Rose Marie Stansbury; and a stepson, John McGowan.
He was employed by the Celanese Corp., and retired from Westvaco in 1981. He was a Navy veteran with the 87th Seabee battalion in the South Pacific.
Mr. Stakem was a member of St. Josephs Catholic Church, Midland, where he served on the cemetery committee and was a member of the church choir. He received the archdiocesan medal of honor from Bishop Francis Murphy for his active role in the parish.
Mr. Stakem was a past president and oldest member of the Midland Volunteer Fire Dept. He was a member of the Midland Sportsmen Club, the American Legion Post #169, Midland, and the Alvin C. Neat Post #5280, VFW. He was also a member of the Mid Democrat Club, which he helped to organize and was currently serving as the president. In 1989, he was given the "Mr. Democrat" award by the Allegany County Democratic Central Committee. Political appointments Mr. Stakem received included: the MD Fire Prevention Commission by Gov. Marvin Mandel, Allegany County Tax Assessment Appeals Board by Gov. Harry Hughes, and the Allegany County Alcoholic Beverage License Commissioners by Gov. William Donald Schaeffer.
In 1998, he and his son, Jim, were presented the MD's Most Beautiful People award for Allegany County for his community involvement. The project he was most proud of was his role with the Midland Democrat Club in co-sponsoring the Dan's Rock Scenic Overlook Park, a dream he had for many years.
Surviving are two sons, James Stakem, at home, and Thomas Stakem, Aurora, Ill.; one daughter, Mary Jane Stakem, Cumberland; one brother, James Stakem, Silver Spring; and one sister, Teresa Stakem, Horn Lake, MS; a brother-in-law, Emerson Stansbury, Rawlings; five sisters-in-law, Charlotte Stakem, Vacaville, Calif., Teresa Stakem, Scottsdale, Ariz., Isabel Weston, Morris, Ill., Rose Davis, Dwight, Ill., and Rosalie Leake, Ottowa, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.
The body is at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, P.A., 8 E. Main St., Lonaconing, where friends will be received on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Mass of a Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Josephs Catholic Church on Monday, March 26, 2001, at 10 a.m. with the Fr. Edward S. Hendricks as celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Josephs Catholic Cemetery, Midland. The Midland Volunteer Fire Co. and Ladies Auxiliary will hold a memorial service at the funeral home on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
A Christian Wake Service will be held at the funeral home on Sunday at 8:30 p.m. with Sister Joan Maenner, OSF, Pastoral Life Director of St. Josephs Catholic Church, Midland. The Alvin C. Neat Post #5280 will hold a memorial service at the funeral home on Saturday at 8 p.m.
Graveside military rites will be accorded by Farrady Post #24, American Legion, Frostburg.
Memorial contributions may take the form of donations to St. Josephs Catholic Church, Box 1, Midland, MD 21542, or WMHS Home Hospice Unit, Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, MD 21502. Memorial cards are available at the funeral home.
JUANITA WINCHESTER
FROSTBURG -- Juanita Winchester, 38, Frostburg, formerly of Randallstown, died March 21, 2001, of cardiac arrest.
Juanita was a loving mother of two beautiful girls. She was born March 6, 1963. She was preceded in death by her mother, Caroline Sue Winchester.
Survivors include daughters, Amanda Sue Winchester and Autumn Toni Hale and their father, Toni Hale; also Juanita's father, Don Winchester Sr. and wife, Jeanette; sisters, Jodie Massie and Dawn Keene; brothers, Don Winchester Jr. and Robert Bowen III; a niece, Caroline; two nephews, Corie and Scott Kohlhepp and brothers-in-law, George Keene Jr. and Vernon Kohlhepp.
Memorial services will be held Friday, March 23, at 11 a.m. in the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland.
M. JEAN FARRIS
WESTERNPORT -- M. Jean Farris, 63, of 429 Poplar St., Westernport, died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born in Westernport, on Oct. 20, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Springer and Mildred (Broadwater) Springer Garlitz. She was also preceded in death by a son, Gary W. Farris.
Mrs. Farris was a homemaker, and a member of the Westernport Church of the Brethren.
Surviving are her husband of 45 years, Simon R. Farris; two sons, Richard Farris of Westernport, and Steve Farris and wife Teresa of Frostburg; three daughters, Kathy Miller and husband Benny of Lonaconing, Linda Farris of Westernport, and Rebecca Kooken and husband Robert of Savannah, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Andrew Farris, April Kooken, Amy Farris, Sarah Kooken, Adam Miller, Matthew Farris and Mark Miller.
The family will receive friends at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Ervin Huston and the Rev. William Shimer officiating.
Interment will be in Philos Cemetery, Westernport.
NELLIE V. WINEBRENNER
FROSTBURG -- Nellie Virginia Winebrenner, 89, of 18999 National Pike, Frostburg, (Garrett County), died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at Devlin Manor Nursing Home, Cumberland.
Born Aug. 18, 1911, in Garrett County, she was a daughter of the late James and Laura (Layton) Winebrenner. She was also preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters, Alice Hetz, Myrtle Winebrenner, Howard, James, Harry, Clayton, Gurnie, Leonard, Francis and Roy Winebrenner.
Miss Winebrenner was a retired seamstress for Flushing Shirt Factory, Grantsville, and was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church.
She is survived by one brother, Grant Winebrenner, Grantsville; a number of nieces and nephews, including Darrell Winebrenner and special friends, Carol Meyers, Doris McKenzie and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Cutter.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., Grantsville, on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be conducted in the funeral home on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Steven Lightner officiating. Interment will be in Mount Zion Cemetery.

PAULINE A. RAINES
CUMBERLAND -- Pauline Agnes Raines, 85, of 10906 Mason Road, NE, Cumberland, died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born on July 18, 1915, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Wilson and Elizabeth Adeline (Twigg) Wilson. She was also preceded in death by five brothers, Carl, Thornton, Harvey, Kenneth and Royce Wilson; and a sister, Nettie Wilson.
Mrs. Raines was a homemaker and retired from the Celanese Fibers Corporation of America. She was a member of Davis Memorial United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a husband, John M. Raines, Cumberland; a sister, Elizabeth E. "Libby" Schwenninger and husband Ernest, Cumberland; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. William Bice officiating.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.
HARRIET B. GRANET
CUMBERLAND -- Harriet B. Granet, 49, born and raised in Cumberland, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at her home in Baltimore, after a long fight with cancer.
Ms. Granet was the daughter of Greta Granet and the late Dr. Milton Granet, both formerly of Cumberland, and was the sister and sister-in-law of Dr. Michael Granet and Dr. Carol Granet, also of Cumberland. Ms. Granet's mother now resides in Longboat Key, Fla.
At the time of her death, Ms. Granet served as principal counsel for the Maryland State Retirement System and, from time to time, appeared on behalf of the State in the Allegany County courts. She was qualified as a yoga instructor and was an outstanding golfer. She was educated in Allegany County schools and then went on to graduate from the National Cathedral School in Washington, D.C., the Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Maryland Law School. Before joining the State Law Department, Ms. Granet was a partner in the Baltimore firm of Steinmann and Granet. She is also survived by her husband, Thomas P. Perkins, a Baltimore attorney.
A celebration of the life of Harriet Granet will be held in the garden at her home, 101 East Highfield Road, Baltimore, at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 23.
