JOSEPH E. GULICK
CUMBERLAND -- Joseph E. Gulick, 54, of Cumberland, died of lung cancer on Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at his residence.
Born on Aug. 29, 1946, in Cumberland, he was the son of Phyllis C. (DeHaven) Gulick, a resident of Frostburg Village, and the late William E. Gulick Sr. His father was the owner of Gulick's Auto Exchange.
Joe was also preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Howard and Grace Pearl Gulick, and his maternal grandparents, Amos G. and Effie Mae DeHaven. His maternal grandparents owned a large dairy farm on what is now known as DeHaven Road. Joe built his own home on the family's property, having finished it in 1994.
He was a 1964 graduate of Fort Hill High School. He was a 1980 cum laude graduate of Northern Virginia Community College.
Joe served in the U.S. Air Force from 1964 to 1968. For 13 years, Joe was a building engineer for the Robert T. Foley Co., Wash., D.C. His late brother-in-law, Wayne E. May, also worked with him there.
Since 1993, he has been self-employed. Joe was an accomplished self-taught wood worker.
He was also an avid reader. He was a student of history, especially of Civil War firearms and Native American culture.
In addition, Joe had a wonderful sense of humor. Joe also had a wealth of life experience that he was willing to share to help others reach their potential. He touched the lives of many friends.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Maryann (Boska) Gulick; one brother, William E. Gulick Jr. and wife Sherry, Fort Ashby, W.Va.; two sisters, Susan A. May, Arlington, Va., and Susie Wallace and husband Wally, Norfolk, Va.; his stepmother, Lois Gulick, Cumberland; and many nieces and nephews, whom he took great delight.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The Christian Wake Service will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 8 p.m. followed with a eulogy by Don DeHaven.
Mass of a Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Saturday at 10 a.m. with Msgr. Thomas Bevan as celebrant.
Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Joe ended his daily prayer with these words "...Each and everyday, help up to be the very best people we can be. Amen."
HARRIET B. GRANET
CUMBERLAND -- Harriet B. Granet, 49, born and raised in Cumberland, died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at her home in Baltimore, after a long fight with cancer.
Ms. Granet was the daughter of Greta Granet and the late Dr. Milton Granet, both formerly of Cumberland, and was the sister and sister-in-law of Dr. Michael Granet and Dr. Carol Granet, also of Cumberland. Ms. Granet's mother now resides in Longboat Key, Fla.
At the time of her death, Ms. Granet served as principal counsel for the Maryland State Retirement System and, from time to time, appeared on behalf of the State in the Allegany County courts. She was qualified as a yoga instructor and was an outstanding golfer. She was educated in Allegany County schools and then went on to graduate from the National Cathedral School in Washington, D.C., the Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Maryland Law School. Before joining the State Law Department, Ms. Granet was a partner in the Baltimore firm of Steinmann and Granet. She is also survived by her husband, Thomas P. Perkins, a Baltimore attorney.
A celebration of the life of Harriet Granet will be held in the garden at her home, 101 East Highfield Road, Baltimore, at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 23.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the National Cathedral School, Mount St. Alban, Washington, D.C. 20016-5000.
CATHERINE C. BOCH
PITTSBURGH -- Catherine C. "Katie" Boch died at her residence in Pittsburgh on Sunday, March 18, 2001. She was born in Baltimore on July 5, 1925, daughter of James and Josephine Lang Fisher.
She was a homemaker and member of St. Sebastian Church, Ross Township.
She is survived by her husband, Richard A. Boch of Pittsburgh, Pa.; two daughters, Darlene Boch of North Side and Gail Hischar of McCandless; and one son, Richard K. Boch of Colonial Heights, Va. She is the grandmother of Daniel, Jeffrey, Matthew and Stephen Boch and Joshua Hischar. She also is survived by a brother, Kenneth Fisher of Columbus, Ga., and a sister, Dorothy Bittner of LaVale, Md.
Christian burial was held at Allegheny County Memorial Park. Contributions may be made to St. Sebastian Church, 311 Seibert Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15237.
RONALD N. MILLER
PAW PAW, W.Va. -- Ronald Neil Miller, 63, of Paw Paw, died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at his home.
He was born Nov. 21, 1937, at Paw Paw, and was the son of the late Rodney A. and Glenna (Sirbaugh) Miller.
As a youth, he was an orchard worker. He was later an apprentice for the Bolten Forge of the B&O Railroad. He also was a plumber and carpenter. He had worked at Cives Steel in Winchester and had retired from PPG Industries.
He was a member of the Lighthouse Assembly of God Church in Paw Paw, where he served as treasurer. He enjoyed woodworking and was an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman.
On July 23, 1956, he married
Sue C. (Kidwell) Miller, who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Karen S. Spencer, two sons, Jeffrey Miller and Travis Duke Miller, two sisters, Delores Lyons and Sue Ann Whitacre, and one brother, William K. Miller, all of Paw Paw; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Lighthouse Assembly of God Church on Sunday, March 25, 2001, at 2 p.m. with pastors Earl Travis, Norman Landis and J.B. Ellis officiating.
Burial will be in the Camp Hill Cemetery, Paw Paw.
The family will receive friends at the Lighthouse Assembly of God Church, Saturday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Kimble Funeral Home, Paw Paw.
ANTHONY J. RUSSELL JR.
LAVALE -- Anthony John "Jack" Russell Jr., 75, of National Highway, LaVale, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Aug. 6, 1925, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Anthony John and Mary Anna (Talley) Russell. He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert E. Russell and Kenneth M. Russell.
Mr. Russell was retired from the Celanese after 43 years of service. He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Pope John Council 5450, Cumberland Outdoor Club and Cumberland Moose 271.
Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Shirley (Hendrickson) Russell; a son, John Anthony Russell, LaVale; a daughter, Rosalind D. Morris and husband David, Cumberland; four grandchildren, Shauna Baker, Chad Baker, David A. Morris and Devin A. Morris; step-granddaughter, Krista Morris; three sisters, Mary B. Andrews and husband Donald, LaVale, Helen M. Mallow and husband Floyd, Cumberland, and Margaret L. "Peg" Eversole and husband Larry, Cumberland; a brother, Raymond N. Russell and wife Emily, Cumberland; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Monday, March 26, 2001, at 10 a.m.
Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
A Christian Wake Service will be held at the funeral home on Sunday at 8:45 p.m.
