DANIEL G. O'BRIEN
SWANTON -- Daniel Glen O'Brien, 80, of Swanton, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 22, 2001, in a beautiful, peaceful place. He passed away at his home on a farm that was his life's work.
He was born in Swanton April 22, 1920, and was a son of the late Daniel T. O'Brien and Florence (Bernard) O'Brien. He also was preceded in death by two sisters, Ethel Simmons and Mary Ellen Bray.
Known as a pillar in his community, he was always there to lend a helping hand to a neighbor, a friend or even a stranger. He will be remembered in the community for his dedication to the Deer Park Community Volunteer Fire Department for more than 50 years, 17 of which he served as president. He was a retired school bus contractor for Garrett County and a member of the Deer Park United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Betty (Shank) O'Brien; five children, Carolyn S. Livengood and husband John, Rita E. Savage and husband Ronald, Robert G. O'Brien and wife Brenda, Y. Jane Roberson and husband Charles, and Ronald W. O'Brien and wife Kim, all of Swanton; eight grandchildren, Stephen H. Miller, Misty D. Moon, Jeffrey W. Droppleman, Heidi J. Harvey, Jason T. Miller, Jamie E. Droppleman, Danny W. O'Brien and Brandon W. Roberson; six great-granchildren, Christopher S. Miller, Sierra M. Miller, Cody S. Harvey, Lacey R. Miller, Cheyenne R. Harvey and Mariah D. Moon; and two sisters, Mona Dahlgren Scott of California and Myrtle Summerville, Columbus, Ohio.
Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the Deer Park United Methodist Church on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Neil Parsons officiating. Interment will be in the Deer Park Cemetery.
Friends may call at the church one half-hour prior to the services.
The family requests memorials take the form of contributions to the Deer Park Community Volunteer Fire Department or the Deer Park United Methodist Church Building Fund.
WILLIAM W. CONLEY
CUMBERLAND -- William W. Conley, 90, of Cumberland, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Memorial Hospital.
Born on Feb. 15, 1911, in Fairmont, W.Va., he was the son of the late Ellis and Marjorie (Waltz) Conley. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Lillian (Taylor) Conley in 1993; three brothers; and one sister.
Mr. Conley was retired from the A&P Tea Company, after 44 years of service, and he was Methodist by faith.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Ann McIntyre and husband Tom, Hurst, Ill., Nancy Jo Waddups and husband Guy, Clearfield, Utah; one sister, Lee Wayne LaRue and husband Guy, Latrobe, Pa.; a special first cousin, Mary E. Porter, Hyndman, Pa.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Wayne R. Turner officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
EDWARD R. RHODES
ROMNEY, W.Va. -- Edward "Pete" R. Rhodes, 70, of Romney, died March 23, 2001, in Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.
Born on Dec. 23, 1930, in Romney, he was the son of the late Carl Allen and Mary Magdalene (Wolford) Rhodes Sr. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Iris Lee Rhodes.
Mr. Rhodes was retired from the Davy Tree Company. He was a veteran of the Korean War, a member of the VFW Wappocomo Post 1101, and the American Legion Hampshire Post 91, both of Romney.
Surviving are one daughter, Diana L. Hinkle and husband William, Romney; one brother, Carl A. Rhodes, Romney; one sister, Agnes (Susie) L. Rhodes, Romney; two nieces, Carole S. Raines and husband Lee, Moorefield, and Brenda K. Rhodes, Romney; two nephews, Earl Thomas Rhodes and wife Nancy, Berkeley Springs, and Roger A. Rhodes, Romney; three grandchildren; one great niece; one great nephew; and a special friend and companion, Helen Berklite, Winchester.
The family will receive friends at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
The funeral will be held at the Shaffer Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 28 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Norman Landis officiating.
Interment will be in Malick Cemetery, Augusta. Military graveside rites will be accorded by the veterans organizations of Hampshire County.
LOUISE R. STURTZ
CUMBERLAND -- Louise Ruth Sturtz, 88, of Devlin Manor, formerly of Wellersburg, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at the manor.
Born on Oct. 31, 1912, in Boswell, she was a daughter of the late William Lawrence and Savilla Ellen (Croyle) Horner.
Surviving are her daughter, Virginia Lee Walls and husband Dale, Bedford Valley; granddaughter, Sandra Denise Fentress and husband Steven; great-grandson, Thomas John Neilson Jr., all of West Friendship; two step-grandchildren; brothers, Robert and wife Nancy, Boswell, Elmer and wife Jane, Hollsopple; and sister, Ellen F. Wolford, Hollsopple.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor Lewis Sturtz, who died in 1957; three brothers; and three sisters.
Mrs. Sturtz had worked in the tube production room and Kelly-Springfield Tire Company in Cumberland. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Wellersburg Volunteer Fire Company. She attended Wellersburg United Methodist Church.
Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, 169 Clarence St., Hyndman, on Sunday, March 25, 2001, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday, March 26, 2001, from at 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Hoffman Funeral Home, Route 403 and Church Road, Davidsville. A prayer service will be held at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Hyndman, on Sunday between 2 and 4 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Hoffman Funeral Home, Davidsville, on Tuesday, March 27 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Ken L. Korns officiating.
Interment will be in Thomas Mennonite Cemetery, Thomas Mills.

LAVALE -- Friends for Anthony John "Jack" Russell Jr., 75, of National Highway, LaVale, who died on Friday, March 23, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital, will be received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Monday, March 26, 2001, at 10 a.m.
Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
A Christian Wake Service will be held at the funeral home on Sunday at 8:45 p.m.
GEORGE H. KINSLEY SR.
CUMBERLAND -- George Harold Kinsley Sr., 80, formerly of The Kensington-Algonquin and residing at the Devlin Manor Nursing Home, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Devlin Manor.
Born on March 21, 1921, in Morgantown, W.Va., he was the son of the late William T. Kinsley and Lilly M. (Nicholson) Kinsley. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Harry M. Kinsley.
Mr. Kinsley was retired as a conductor on Baltimore & Ohio Railroad in 1972. He served in the United States Coast Guard from 1942 to 1943. He was a former member of many fraternal organizations, mostly notably the Masonic Temple, Fort Cumberland Post #13 American Legion, Disabled American Veterans Chapter #2, and the United Transportation Union.
He is survived by his wife, Esther J. (Catherman) Edwards, whom he married
on Nov. 18, 1970; a son, George "Tim" Kinsley and wife Darlene, Flushing, Mich.; a daughter, Shari Schewe, Cumberland; four grandchildren, Todd, Scott, Brian and Tammy; three stepdaughters, Eleanor Miller and husband Gene, Frostburg, Sandra Kanauf and husband Ray, Meyersville, and Ruth Taylor, Frostburg; two stepsons, Bob Edwards and wife Eileen, Frostburg, and Nick Edwards and wife Nanna, San Francisco; 18 step-grandchildren, Barbara, Eugene, Karen, Rhonda, Beth, Kenneth, Kevin, Diane, James, John, Thomas, Gary, Danny, Brenda, Becky, James, David and Kim; and numerous step-great-grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 a.m.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
