CUMBERLAND -- Friends for Mary Catherine Kastner will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. There will be a Christian Wake service conducted Thursday at 8 p.m.
Mass of a Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Friday at 1 p.m.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
PAUL E. FREELAND
CUMBERLAND -- Mr. Paul Edward Freeland, 85, of 425 Pennsylvania Ave., Cumberland, passed away on Monday evening, March 26, 2001, at Memorial Hospital.
Born in Cumberland, on Oct. 22, 1915, he was the son of the late Charles Freeland and Elizabeth (Leidinger) Freeland. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Celesta Agnes (Raso) Ralston Freeland in October 1994; three brothers, Joseph, Charles Phillip and Father Phillip O.M. Cap.; and sisters, Eleanor Grimes and Vernonica Long.
Mr. Freeland was a retired bartender at the American Legion. He was a veteran of World War II U.S. Army, member of VFW, American Legion Post #13, Catholic War veterans, 40 & 8 Club and St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Surviving are one daughter, K. Joanne McGown and husband Carroll R., Silver Springs; two grandsons, Michael L. McGown, Bedford, New Hampshire, and Paul R. McGown, San Jose, Calif.; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Grace M. Post, Cumberland, and Mary G. Insogna, Baltimore; two nieces; and one great-niece.
Mr. Freeland was cremated at the Cumberland Crematory, 404 Decatur St., Cumberland.
Mass of a Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Friday at 9 a.m. with Father Milton A. Hipsley as celebrant.
Inurnment will be in St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery, Frostburg. Military rites will be accorded graveside by the Local Veterans Organizations Combined.
In lieu of flowers, make contributions to St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland.
WILDA K. WINTERS
OAKLAND -- Wilda Kathryn Winters, 81, of Oakland, died Sunday, March 25, 2001, at her home.
Born on May 14, 1919, in Crellin, she was a daughter of the late Howard J. Weimer and Nellie (Zimmerman) Weimer. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harvey J. Winters Sr.; and one son, Harvey J. "Sonny" Winters Jr.
Mrs. Winters was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Oakland.
She is survived by one daughter, Patricia A. Light of Oakland; one son, Vaughn V. Winters of Oakland; one brother, Verl Weimer of Loch Lynn; two sisters, Geraldine Miller and Donna Buntrock, both of Fairfax, Va.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
At Mrs. Winters request, her body has been donated to medical science.
A memorial service will be conducted at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Michael Robinson officiating.
The family requests memorials take the form of contributions to Hospice of Garrett County or the Southern Garrett Rescue Squad.
The Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, is in charge of the arrangements.
ELLA H. RHODES
CUMBERLAND -- Ella Harrison (Burger) Rhodes, 93, of Cumberland Manor Apartments, Cumberland, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at the Cumberland Nursing Home.
Born on Feb. 21, 1908, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Samuel M. Burger and Bertha (Davis) Burger-Reynolds. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John H. Rhodes; and one brother, Frederick S. Burger.
Mrs. Rhodes was a lifelong member of the Metropolitan A.M.E. Church, and served as a Steward, Missionary Society, and sang on the Senior Choir.
She is survived by her daughter, Ethel Yates, Cumberland; her son, Edward T. Rhodes Sr., Silver Spring; two stepdaughters, Alpharetta Smith and Bettie Merritt, both of Cumberland; her sister, Alexina Davis, Cumberland; four grandsons, John J. "Perkey" Yates Sr., Franklin C. Yates, Edward T. Rhodes Jr., and Kevin Merritt; four granddaughters, Betty Washington, Susan Raiford, Delores Cooper and Shari Williams; three great-grandchildren, Bridget Ritchie, Kristal Yates and John J. "P.J." Yates Jr.; one great-great-granddaughter, Maria Suzanne Ritchie; numerous nieces and nephews; and one special niece, Margie Fisher.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
A memorial service will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Gary N. Curtis officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
JAMES R. CLOSE
HYNDMAN, Pa. -- James Richard "Dick" Close, 65, of Charles Street, Hyndman, died March 26, 2001, at his winter residence at Lazy Acres, Zolfo Springs, Fla.
Born on Dec. 27, 1935, in Cumberland, Md., he was the son of the late Iola Elizabeth (Close) Shaffer. He was raised by his maternal grandmother, Muriel Close, who also preceded him in death.
Mr. Close is survived by his wife of 45 years, Ruth Ellen (Chaney) Close, whom he married
August 27, 1955; children, Jerry L. and wife Debbie (Divelbiss), Hyndman, Mary "Peanut" Miller and husband Robert, Warminster, Pa.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers, Woodrow Shaffer and wife Peggy, Martinsburg, W.Va., and Kenny Shaffer, Meyersdale; sisters, Joyce Haller and husband James, Wiley Ford, W.Va., and Darlene Lowery and Elaine Shaffer, both of Hyndman.
Mr. Close was the owner/operator of Dick's Garage, Hyndman, from 1977 until 1991. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Hyndman. He was active in the Hyndman-Londonderry Lion's Club. He was also an avid bowler.
Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, 169 Clarence St., Hyndman, on Friday, March 30 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, March 31 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. David L. Klink officiating.
Interment will be in Hyndman Cemetery.
MARY L. KIMBLE
CUMBERLAND -- Mary Lou Kimble, 73, of 10200 Hillcrest Drive, Cumberland, died Monday, March 26, 2001, at Washington County Hospital.
Born on April 21, 1927, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Robert Ersom and Mary Ann (Fink) Ersom-Coberly. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Norman Kimble.
Mrs. Kimble was a homemaker.
She is survived by three daughters, Ruth Hornberger and husband Sonny, Altoona, Pa., Theora Beckman, Mount Savage, Barbara Phillips-Kline and husband Rick, Hagerstown; 18 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 11 a.m. with Pastor James Glass officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Pallbearers for Mrs. Kimble will be her grandsons, Kevin Phillips, Joe Phillips III, Jeremy Phillips, Joshua Phillips, Gregory Humbertson and Joe Humbertson.
