CHESTER F. ERICKSON
CUMBERLAND -- Chester F. Erickson, 88, of Cumberland, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Dec. 19, 1912, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Broder and Zella M. (Huff) Erichsen. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edith Virginia (Brown) Erickson, 1984; 14 brothers and sisters. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Mr. Erickson was retired from the Celanese Corp., spinning department after 46 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, served in the Battle of the Bulge and received the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Paula (Settle) Erickson; one son, Robert L. Erickson and wife, Dorothy M., Columbus, Ohio; three grandchildren, Ali Wren Malley; Robin Marisa Erickson; Charis Kelvin Erickson, all of Columbus; six great-grandchildren, Jazmin, DeVaughn, Gabriel, Malik, Cameron, Meshach and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, PA, 108 Virginia Avenue, on Friday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Christ United Methodist Church on Saturday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Max Greenfield officiating. Friends will be received at the church from 12 to 1 p.m.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Christ United Methodist Church or the Emmanuel-Bethel United Methodist Church.
DAISY R. THOMAS
BARTON -- Daisy Rosella Thomas, 82, of Legislative Road, Barton, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born at Mill Run on June 29, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Mary Katherine (Clark) Custer. Her husband, James William Thomas, on Aug. 20, 1990, also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Thomas was a homemaker and Methodist by faith.
Surviving are three daughters, Karen Dill, Sharpsburg; Mary Boone, Capon Bridge, W.Va.; Patricia Usakowski, Clawson, Mich.; five sons, James W. Thomas Jr., Barton; Charles D. Thomas, Hagerstown; John Myers, Oxford, Mich.; Eugene Myers, Pontiac, Mich.; and Lester Myers, Attica, Mich.; one brother, Charles Custer, Barton; 19 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the Boal Memorial Chapel, Barton, on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the chapel on Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Harold Malone officiating.
Interment will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery, Moscow Mills.
LILLIAN V. GILFORD
CUMBERLAND -- Lillian Virginia Gilford, 89, of Allegany County Nursing Home, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at the nursing home.
Born July 15, 1911, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Cora (Twigg) Freeland. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Nelson Gilford, May 1994.
Mrs. Gilford was a homemaker. She was a member of First Christian Church, Frederick Street and the Cumberland Senior Citizens.
Surviving are two daughters, June Gilford May, Winston Salem, N.C.; Judith Loraine Gilford, Gaithersburg; one brother, Herman Freeland and wife, Lorean, Shepherdstown, W.Va.; one sister, Geraldine Brown, Wiley Ford, W.Va.; three grandchildren, Jennifer Leigh Moore and husband, Allen, Raleigh, N.C.; Stephen Keith May and wife, Frankie, Concord, N.C.; Julia S. May, Wilmington, N.C.; one great-granddaughter, Holly Marie May; two great-grandsons, Jonathan Taylor May and Asa May.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, PA, 108 Virginia Avenue, on Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Kay Barmoy officiating.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

CUMBERLAND -- Friends will be received for William F. "Pete" Conis at Scarpelli Funeral Home, PA, 108 Virginia Avenue, Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. There will be a Christian Wake conducted Thursday at 8:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 11 a.m.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
KASTNER SERVICES
CUMBERLAND -- Friends will be received for Mary Catherine Kastner at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A.,108 Virginia Avenue on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. There will be a Christian Wake service conducted Thursday at 8 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Friday at 1 p.m.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Cumberland.
LELAND W. MOSES
FROSTBURG -- Leland W. Moses, 81, of South Grant Street, Frostburg, died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born April 1, 1919, in Elkins, W.Va., he was the son of the late George and Ethel (Spiker) Moses. He also was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Jane (Krause) Moses.
Mr. Moses was retired from Carpenters Local Union 1024, Cumberland. During World War II, he courageously served in the Pacific with the U.S. Army.
He was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ, Frostburg, where he served as president of the church consistory for many years and was active in his church family. He also was a member and past master of Mountain Lodge 99, AF&AM, Frostburg; Royal Arch Masonry Antiock Commandery 6 Knights of Templer, Cumberland; Ali Ghan Shrine A.A.O.N.M.S., Cumberland; Ali Ghan Motor Corps; Mountain Chapter 15 Order of the Eastern Star; Salem A. Chapter 18, Cumberland and Farrady Post 24, American Legion, Frostburg.
Mr. Moses is survived by his wife, Clara (Meese-Footen) Moses; one daughter, Deborah Elizabeth Moses Chinault and friend, Jerry LeDoux, Birmingham, Ala.; one loving granddaughter, Kimberly Lauren Chinault and fiancee, Steven Martin Jr., Mechanicsville; one sister, Irene Schramm, Frostburg; five stepsons, Joseph A. Footen and wife, Avanelle, Tuscon, Arizona; John Footen and wife, Diane, Dawson; Daniel Footen and wife, Frances, Hancock; James Footen and wife, Jerry, Cumberland, and Francis X. Footen and wife, Judy, Charleston, W.Va.; four stepdaughters, Mary Beck and husband, Martin, Frederick; Katherine Ekstrom and friend, Ray Likin, Clarissa McKenzie and Patricia Chaney and husband, Pete, Hagerstown; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Middleton and Laverne Rendar and several nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.
"Moe" touched the hearts of many, and he will be missed by all that knew him.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Avenue, Frostburg, on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Members of Mountain Lodge 99 will hold a memorial service at the funeral home on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Zion United Church of Christ on Saturday at 10 a.m. with Pastor Diane Smith officiating.
Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park. The Farrady Post 24 Honor Guard will accord military honors at graveside. A luncheon will be held at the church following the committal services.
Rather than flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Zion United Church of Christ in Leland's name, 160 East Main Street, Frostburg, MD 21532.
