SHIRLEY M. VANMETER
SUMMERSVILLE, W.Va. -- Shirley Marie VanMeter, 71, of Summerville, was called home Sunday, April 1, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Feb. 7, 1930, in Wiley Ford, she was the daughter of the late Emory C. and Thelma M. (Gordon) VanMeter. She also was preceded in death by three sisters, Ruth Shoemaker, Nora Stevens and Catherine VanMeter; and five brothers, Emory L. VanMeter, Charles K. VanMeter, Willie VanMeter, Richard VanMeter and Paul VanMeter.
Mrs. VanMeter was the owner of the Amish Barn and Gift Shop Rest in Intercourse, Pa. She was a 1966 graduate of Conestago Valley High School, Lancaster, Pa. She was Pentecostal and Baptist by faith; Past Matron three times of McKinley Chapter 12 Order of the Eastern Star, Cumberland; member of Ladies Shire of George Washington Shire Club, Alexandria, Va.; member of Prince Georges Cedarettes 139; and past president three times of the Homemakers Clubs in West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland. She played the piano and organ for 18 years in many local churches and was a choir member in many local churches.
Surviving are two sisters, Mary E. Benson and husband Thomas, Mount Holly Springs, Pa., and Barbara E. Winebrenner and husband Charles, Lonaconing; two brothers, Melvin VanMeter and wife Frances, Gardner, Pa., and John R. VanMeter and wife Janet, Clearville, Pa.; and 37 nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. McKinley Chapter 12 OES will conduct a memorial service on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. George R. Loar officiating.
Interment will be in the Oldtown Cemetery.
CALVIN E. ASHBY
MOSCOW -- Calvin Eugene Ashby, 50, of Bruton Parish Court, Apartment 203, Manassas, Va., formerly of Moscow, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at Prince William Hospital, Manassas.
Born June 8, 1950, at Moscow, he was a son of Donald E. Ashby and Louise (Barnes) Ashby, of Manassas.
Surviving are his wife, Linda Lou (Struck) Ashby; one son, Brian K. Ashby, Waynesboro, Va.; two daughters, Patricia Renee Chavez, San Antonio, Texas, and Tammy Yvonne Ashby, Sterling, Va.; five grandchildren; one sister, Krista Viering, Sterling, Va.; one brother, Michael Dodson, Sterling, Va.; and eight nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Major Ashby, Blanche Ashby, Raymond Barnes and Myrtle Barnes; and one brother, Ricky Ashby.
The body is at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing. Friends will be received there Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at the funeral home Thursday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Richard Mortimore officiating.
Interment will be in the Laurel Hill Cemetery, Moscow Mills.
MIRIAM E. JUNKINS
KEYSER, W.Va. -- Miriam E. Junkins, 84, a resident of Heartland of Keyser, formerly of 130 Chatham Road, Keyser, died on Monday, April 2, 2001, at Potomac Valley Hospital.
Born on Dec. 26, 1916, in Keyser, she was the daughter of the late Marques D. and Laura C. (Harman) Rice. She also was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Maurice B. "Junk" Junkins, on Dec. 12, 2000; and a grandson, Gene C. Clem II.
Mrs. Junkins was a member of the Keyser Presbyterian Church and the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Surviving are her sons, Donald L. Clem and wife Terri of Smith Mountain Lake, Va., Gene C. Clem and wife Janice of Keyser and Charles Thomas Junkins and wife Susan, Collinsville, Miss.; her seven grandchildren, Carla Richard, Tami Fries, Jeff Clem, Brian Clem, Steve Clem, Joe Clem and Joshua M. Junkins; and her 10 great-grandchildren, Eli, Gene, Justin, Natoshia, Jeremiah, Joshua, Jason, Meredith, Brandon and Cody.
Friends will be received at the Markwood Funeral Home, Keyser, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Markwood Funeral Home on Thursday, April 5, 2001, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Jack Sanders officiating.
Interment will be in Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.

MAUDE L. COPELAND
ELK GARDEN, W.Va. -- Maude L. Copeland, 94, of Elk Garden, died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at the Bay View Hospital in Baltimore.
Born June 11, 1906, at Wabash, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Mary A. (Davis) Green. Maude also was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence "Jake" Copeland.
Until her retirement, Mrs. Copeland served for many years as the postmaster of the Elk Garden post office. She also was a devoted member and supporter of the Elk Garden Methodist Church.
Surviving are a son, Donald Copeland, Elk Garden; a daughter, Kathryn Evans, Baltimore; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Maude was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Friends will be received at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Kitzmiller, Md., on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the Elk Garden Methodist Church on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Brenda Shreve officiating.
Interment will be in the IOOF Cemetery, Elk Garden.
GERALD RUCKMAN
RIDGELEY, W.Va. -- Gerald Ruckman, 75, of Ridgeley, went to be with his Lord on Monday, April 2, 2001.
Born March 24, 1926, in Cumberland, Md., he was the son of the late William E. and Estella V. (Gray) Ruckman. He also was preceded in death by his first wife, Dortha E. (Curry) Ruckman; five brothers, James, Roy, Charles, Raymond and William Ruckman; and one sister, Delores Strickland.
Mr. Ruckman was a driver for ATA. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and member of Moose Lodge 271; Eagles Aerie 245; Gold Star Post 6452 VFW; and Wiley Ford Church of the Brethren.
Surviving are his wife, Agnes Ruckman; two daughters, Karyn L. Ruckman, Hagerstown, Md., and Diane K. Winebrenner, Ridgeley; two stepdaughters, Deborah McKenzie, Maine, and Dawna Twigg, Ridgeley; three stepsons, James Hockaday, Ridgeley, Keith Northcraft, Wiley Ford, and Donald Longerbeam, Ridgeley; one brother, Richard Ruckman and wife Phyllis, Wiley Ford; three grandchildren, Jennifer A. Winebrenner, James R. Winebrenner and Jaclyn K. Winebrenner, all of Ridgeley; one great-grandchild, Corey N. Winebrenner; 16 step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren, Marcellus, Shania and Ali Hockaday.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Wiley Ford Church of the Brethren on Thursday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Paul Dietz and Pastor Benny Brakeall officiating. Friends will be received at the church from noon to 1 p.m.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be William A. Blacker II; and grandsons James R. Winebrenner Jr., Jimmy Lee Twigg, John Hockaday, Christopher Rhodes and Donald Longerbeam Jr.
Military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.

CUMBERLAND -- Military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard in the Rocky Gap Veterans cemetery on April 12, for Frank J. Sullivan, 83, of Cumberland, who died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001.
A short committal service will be held at the chapel at 10 a.m.
