RITA E. WHETZEL
PIEDMONT, W.Va. -- Rita Ellen (Hartman) Whetzel, 49, of 24 Jones St., Piedmont, died Tuesday, April 4, 2001, at Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser.
Born at Keyser, on June 6, 1951, she was the daughter of Anna Rita (Dawson) Hartman of Westernport, Md., and the late James D. Hartman Sr. She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert G. Hartman and her second husband, James "Fuzz" Whetzel.
Mrs. Whetzel was employed at the Tri Town News stand. She is Catholic by faith, a member of Petunia Council #10 and a member of Kelly Mansfield Post #52 American Legion.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by three sons, Shawn Wise and wife Ruth Ann, Jason Whetzel and Shannon Riggleman, all of Westernport; two daughters, Shanna Rae (Riggleman) Bowman and husband Russell and Trista Kaye Riggleman, all of Piedmont; three grandsons, Johnathon R. Kimble, Stephen P. Wise, Ryan A. Kimble; and one granddaughter, Jada L. Whetzel; two sisters, Sue Miller and husband Dale of Westernport, and Kay Barone and husband Russ of Tonawanda, N.Y.; one brother, James D. Hartman and wife Kim of Westernport. She also leaves behind a special friend and companion, Dale Meyers.
The family will receive friends at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Adam Parker officiating.
Interment will be in Philos Cemetery, Westernport.
RUTH L. DWINAL
MOOREFIELD, W.Va. -- Ruth Louise Dwinal "Ruthie", 91, a resident of the Pendleton County Nursing Home, formerly of Moorefield, passed this life Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Grant Memorial Hospital in Petersburg.
Born on Dec. 14, 1909, on Wolfe Mountain in Hardy County, she was the daughter of the late Columbus and Laura (Helmick) Wolfe. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by one daughter and three brothers. She was the last member of her immediate family.
Surviving are her son, Charles E. Dwinal Jr. of Chantilly, Va.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Ruthie was a homemaker and a member of the Moorefield Church of the Brethren, the Riverside Home Demonstration Club and was very active in the Hardy County Committee on Aging.
Friends may call any time after 8 a.m. Saturday at the Elmore-Chambers Funeral Home. The family will receive friends there from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, April 8, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Elmore-Chambers Funeral Home with the Rev. Harold Garber officiating.
Burial will follow at the Olivet Cemetery, Moorefield.

E. JUANITA WELSH
WESTERNPORT -- Mrs. E. Juanita Welsh, 68, of 129 Philos Ave., Westernport, died at her home on Wednesday, April 4, 2001. She was born on Sept. 4, 1932, in Piedmont, W.Va., and was the daughter of the late William E. Clark and Nellie Arnold Clark. Her husband, Bernard P. Welsh, who died on July 28, 1998, and a brother, Kenneth Clark, preceded her in death.
She was a graduate of Piedmont High School. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Westernport. She retired from Westvaco Corp. in January 1995. She was an Assistant Operator in the Automatic Finishing Dept. at the time of her retirement. She was a member of Luke Local 676 UPIU. She was a member of Victory Post #155 American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Westernport. She was an avid doll collector.
Four brothers, Joseph Clark and Charles "Chippy" Clark of Piedmont and Carl "Monk" Clark and Junior Clark and wife Frances of Keyser, also survive her. One sister, Kathleen Miller of Westernport. She is also survived by two special nieces, Diana Pampinto and Terri Newlin and numerous other nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Fredlock Funeral Home on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The Legion Auxiliary will hold a memorial service at the funeral home on Sunday at 7 p.m. Mass of a Christian Burial will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's, Ft. Ivan M. Lebar, T.O.R., officiating.
Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
ARETTA V. JOHNSON
CUMBERLAND -- Aretta Virginia Johnson, 84, of 821 Memorial Ave., Cumberland, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at her home.
Born on May 29, 1916, in Romney, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Harold Davis and Frona (Shank) Davis. She was also preceded by her husband, Ember D. Johnson in 1986.
Mrs. Johnson was employed at the Manhattan Mens Store. Prior to her retirement, she was very active in Girl Scouts, Parent Teachers Association as well as many other civic organizations.
She is survived by her son, Thomas W. Johnson, Cumberland; a daughter, Brenda J. Johnson, Manhattan, N.Y.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Diane Smith officiating.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Allegany County Animal Shelter.
EDWARD COCKRUM
OLDTOWN -- Edward "Ed" Cockrum, 86, of Oldtown, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at his residence.
Born Dec. 29, 1914, in Saint Francis, Arkansas, he was the son of the late Royal Clinton Cockrum and Isabelle (McMurray) Cockrum. He also was preceded in death by his first wife, Florence (Varner) Cockrum; one daughter, Gwendolyn Cockrum; four brothers; and one sister. Mr. Cockrum was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Mr. Cockrum was retired from Harry Diamond Laboratories, U.S. Army Command, Washington, D.C. He was a member of the Olivers Grove United Methodist Church, Oldtown; Cumberland Lodge 271 Loyal Order of Moose; and the National Retired Federal Employees Association.
Surviving are his wife, Anna "Mae" (Shoemaker-Evans) Cockrum; two daughters, Irene Chapman and husband Larry, Monteray, Va., and Susan Donovan and husband Mark, Newark, Del.; one son, Edward "Bud" Cockrum and wife Joyce, Cumberland; one stepdaughter, Tammy Portmess and husband Carl, Ridgeley, W.Va.; two stepsons, Thomas Evans and wife Terri, Winchester, Va., and Joseph Evans, Oldtown; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four step-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Olivers Grove United Methodist Church on Monday at 11:30 a.m. with Pastor Mike Henning officiating.
Interment will be in the Olivers Grove Cemetery, Oldtown.
REV. EVERT C. MILLARD
FINZEL -- The Rev. Evert C. Millard died April 5th at his home in Finzel, Md.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Roberta; daughter Lorelee and husband Robert Farrell, Frostburg; daughter Mary Kay and husband Mitchell Hauptman, Lakeport, Calif.; and three grandchildren, Jessica Farrell, Iven and Alyssa Hauptman.
Mr. Millard was a veteran of World War II, having served as a weather forecaster with the Air Force.
An ordained minister with the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, Mr. Millard has served in Jamaica, W.I., Kentucky, Missouri, Illinois, Maryland and Pennsylvania.
A memorial service will be held April 22 at 2 p.m. at the Hostetler Church of the Brethren in Pocohantas. Friends are invited to greet the family before and after the service.
