BLAIR J. BUCKEL
GRANTSVILLE -- Blair J. Buckel, 82, of 1139 North Park Road, Grantsville, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born April 18, 1918, in Bittinger, Md. he was a son of the late William Edward and Bertha Ellen (Wiley) Buckel. He also was preceded in death by four brothers, Robert, Richard and Blake Buckel and Vernon Wiley.
Mr. Buckel retired as a sergeant from the Maryland State Police, having served from 1941 to 1974. He was a member of the Maryland State Police Alumni Association, Fraternal Order of Police, and was a lifetime member of Elks Lodge 470, Frostburg, Md. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Grantsville.
Survivors include one son, William B. "Butch" Buckel and wife Hope, Grantsville; one daughter, Beverly J. Scott and husband Jack, Rock Hill, S.C.; two brothers, Max Buckel, Adelphi, Md., and David Buckel, Richmond, Va.; five sisters, Ferne Beachy and Beulah Moon, both of Bittinger, June Green and Ruby Orendorf, both of LaVale, Md., and Jo Ellen Graham, St. Albans, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, Md., on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted in the funeral home on Monday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Randy K. Meyer officiating.
Interment will be in the Bittinger Cemetery.
Expressions of sympathy may be directed to the Northern Garrett County Rescue Squad.
EDNA B. WRIGHT
ACCIDENT -- Edna Blanche Wright, 87, of 303 S. Main St., Accident, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland, Md.
Born Sept. 9, 1913, in Hazelton, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Tarleton and Alverta (Frazee) Humberson. She also was preceded in death by one grandson, Michael Wright; and one sister, Marie Sisler.
Mrs. Wright was a member of Hoyes United Methodist Church and was active in various capacities in the church. She was also an active member of the Homemaker's Club, Woodman of the World, Camp 45, Friendsville, and the Akron, Ohio Garden Club.
She is survived by her husband, Russell Wright; three sons, Gordon Wright, Hoyes, Md., Lambert Wright, New Castle, Pa., and Delmos Wright, Palm Harbor, Fla.; two daughters, Delores Shade, Frederick, Md., Elsie Rabago, Mountain View, Calif.; two brothers, Arnold Humberson, Hazelton, and Ralph Humberson, Selbysport, Md.; one sister, Ethel Frantz, Hazelton; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 943 Second Ave., Friendsville, Md., on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted in the funeral home on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Samuel Wachter and the Rev. Ross Glotfelty officiating.
Interment will be in the Blooming Rose Cemetery.
HOWARD F. DIEHL
CRESAPTOWN -- Howard F. Diehl, 67, loving husband, father and grandfather, of Cresaptown, went to be with the Lord and Savior, Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born on Oct. 5, 1933, in Ridgeley, W.Va., he was the son of the late Herman Oliver and Rose Cecelia (Ridgley) Diehl. He was married
to June Elaine Whiteman on March 9, 1952. They just celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary. June and Howard just reaffirmed their wedding vows in their 50th year of their marriage on April 2, 2001. He was preceded in death by one sister, Annabel Caldwell; and one brother, James Diehl.
Mr. Diehl was a retired sheet metal journeyman through Local 100 and was employed by Walter N. Yoder and Sons, for over 30 years. He was a member of Cresaptown United Methodist Church, and former trustee and usher for the church.
In addition to his wife, surviving are one son, Michael B. Diehl and wife Carla (Paupe), LaVale; one daughter, Dee Ann Diehl, Cresaptown; three grandchildren, Christopher Dignan, Sarah Diehl and Michael Diehl; one sister, Nancy Nemith and husband Bill, Oakland; and one sister-in-law, Elaine Diehl.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Cresaptown, on Monday from 12 to 1 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Harold R. McClay Jr. officiating.
Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Cresaptown United Methodist Church.
WALTER L. HAINES
GLENCOE, Pa. -- Walter Leo Haines, 77, of Glencoe Road, Glencoe, died April 6, 2001, near his home.
Born on Aug. 21, 1923, in Greenridge, Md., he was the son of the late Myrtle (Grapes) and Walter Lupton Haines. He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Debra; and two brothers.
Mr. Haines is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joan Elizabeth (McKenzie) Haines, whom he married
on Dec. 24, 1945; children, Walter D. and wife Carol Smith, Glencoe, Christopher and wife Priscilla (Foor), Somerset, Joan Mothersbaugh and husband William, Glencoe, and Joyce Shindledecker and husband Ronald, Glencoe; grandchildren, Jeff, Michele, Michael, Kayla, Hanna and Kayla; brothers, John and wife Helen, Flintstone, William, Frederick; and sister, Mary I. Decker, Florida.
Mr. Haines retired from Kelly-Springfield with 32 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he served with the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart. An avid bowler, hunter and fisherman, he was a member of the Kennells Mills Sportsman's Club.
Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, 169 Clarence St., Hyndman, on Monday, April 9, 2001, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Cresaptown, on April 10, 2001, at 10 a.m. with the Fr. William Moody officiating.
Interment will be in St. Ambrose Cemetery. Military honors will be conferred graveside by the Combined Veterans of Cumberland.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be directed to Mr. Haines' widow.
DAVID H. ACK
Keyser, W.Va. - David H. Ack, 46, of 63 G Street, Keyser, died on Friday, April 6, 2001, as the result of a vehicle accident.
Born on August 23, 1954, in Keyser, he was the son of Thelma B. (Nichol) Ack of Keyser, and the late Harry Edward Ack. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Linda K. Musgrove.
David was a Sheeter Operator at the Westvaco Finished Product Warehouse. He was a 1972 Graduate of Bruce High School, a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, Victory Post #155 American Legion, Westernport, and Black Hawk Tribe #131, Westernport. He also was a U.S. Navy Vietnam veteran.
Surviving in addition to his mother Thelma, are his wife, Debra Lynn (Metcalfe) Ack.; his sister, Judy Cox and husband Bob; his brother, Gary E. Ack, Sr. and wife Diane, all of Keyser. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Mark Edward Carder, Gary Edward Ack Jr., William K. Ack, Michelle Diane (Missy) Ack, Thomas J. Musgrove and Tammy S. Musgrove; great-nieces and nephews, Mariah P. Ack, William K. Ack, Alyassa Musgrove, Lance Musgrove and James T. Musgrove; his mother-in-law, Anne Haggerty of Keyser; and Uncle Heyl Ack and wife Eloise of McCoole.
Friends will be received at the Markwood Funeral Home, Keyser, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral Services will be conducted at the Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Sue C. Jarrett officiating.
Interment will be in Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser. Military graveside honors will be accorded by the Local Veteran Associations.
DOROTHY V. JEWELL
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Dorothy V. Jewell, 89, of San Jose, formerly of Cumberland, Md., died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at the Westgate Convalescent Home.
Born on Jan. 19, 1912, in Oakmont, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Floyd Arthur and Belva May (Welch) Dayton. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Boyd Owen Jewell in 1985.
Mrs. Jewell was retired from the Kelly-Springfield Tire Company, where she had been a production worker.
Survivors include her son, Greg Owen Jewell and wife Lorrie, San Jose.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Monday from 2 to 5 p.m.
The funeral service will be conducted from the funeral home on Tuesday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Charles Riggleman officiating.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.
