OLDTOWN -- Friends for Edward "Ed" Cockrum will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Olivers Grove United Methodist Church at 11:30 a.m.
Interment will be in Olivers Grove Cemetery, Oldtown.
DEBRA S. BYRNE
WOODSTOCK, Va. -- Debra S. (Haines) Byrne, 40, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, in Woodstock. A memorial service will be held Monday at 6 p.m. at the Fort Ashby Fire Department dining room with Pastor David Hattenfield officiating.
Born on Nov. 24, 1960, in Romney, W.Va., she was the daughter of Ruth Adams Haines, Keyser, and the late Arthur Haines. She was a 1978 graduate of Frankfort High School, Short Gap, W.Va., and worked at the Evergreen Golf Course, Haymarket.
Surviving are her son, James Aaron Byrne, Springfield; three sisters, Connie Murphy and husband Vic, Keyser, W.Va., Mary Jane Rockwell and husband Richard, Short Gap, and Cathy Wotring and husband Steve, Fort Ashby; four brothers, David Haines and wife Linda, Gettysburg, Pa., Donald Haines, Elkins, Larry Haines and wife Vicki, Keyser, and Michael Haines and wife Thersa, Keyser; foster mother, Barbara G. Simon, Woodstock; foster father, Lantz Simons of Herndon; three foster brothers, Steve Simons of Woodstock, Eric and Todd Simons of Haymarket; several nieces and nephews; and two great nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to M&T Bank, Fort Ashby, for funeral expenses.
Following the services, a dinner will be served.
EDITH E. CARTER
MOUNT SAVAGE -- Edith Elizabeth Carter, 90, formerly of 15705 Old Iron Rail St., died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at the Saint Vincent de Paul Nursing Center, Frostburg.
Born on Dec. 5, 1910, in Eckhart, she was the daughter of the late James Charles and Nellie (Connor) Carter. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Edward H. Carter in 1976; five brothers, Elmer J. Carter, Charles Carter, Edgar L. Carter, Joseph L. Carter and George Carter; and five sisters, Mary W. Sleeman, Lillian Burch, Ruth Carter, Esther May Carter, who was her twin, and Alice Carter.
Mrs. Carter was a homemaker. Her interests were in music, watching college basketball and politics.
She was a member of the Mount Savage United Methodist Church and the Western Maryland Republican Club, Cumberland.
Mrs. Carter is survived by two sons, Ronald E. Carter and wife Cora, Mount Savage, and James E. Carter and friend Carolyn Harold, Mount Savage; one daughter, Phyllis Harpold and husband the Rev. George Harpold, Frostburgh; eight grandchildren, Randy Carter and wife Andrea, Rhonda Frankenberry and husband Michael, Bradley Carter and wife Tessa, Esther Dee Blank and husband John, Lynn Harpold, Anita Harpold, Michael Harpold and wife Andrea and Justin Carter; 11 great-grandchildren, Curtis, Carrie and Rachel Carter, Christopher Frankenberry, Jill Frankenberry, Bailey, Lexi and Ava Lucero-Carter and Holly, Lori and Jamie Blank; one brother, Harold Richard Carter, Eckhart; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Richard Broome officiating, and the Rev. George Harpold assisting.
Interment will be the Saint Patrick's Catholic Church, Mount Savage.

BETTY C. WALTERS
CUMBERLAND -- On April 7, 2001, Betty C. Walters gallant battle with colon cancer concluded and her soul was conveyed unto heaven for posterity.
Born on Feb. 7, 1928, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Thomas N. and Emma L. (King) Atkins. She was the devoted wife of Buck Walters. She was the mother of four sons, Gary, Falls Church, Va., Jim, Carpendale, W.Va., Alan, Cumberland, and Denny, Cumberland; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She is also survived by a sister, Mary Louise Hamel, Yardley, Pa.
A graduate of Allegany High School, Betty was retired from the Allegany County Board of Education, where she was employed as a teachers assistant with the Special Education children and as a school health nurse.
Her love of family, unique outlook on life, and wonderful sense of humor will be missed by all who had the good fortune to know her, and those wonderful memories will be revisited time and time again.
There will be no visitation.
In Betty's final earthly act of kindness, she donated her body to The Anatomy Board of Maryland, so that health professionals may find answers and others may benefit from this gained wisdom in the future.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of personal choice.
ROSE TUTTLE
MOUNT SAVAGE -- Rose (Blank) Tuttle, 84, born June 13, 1916, in Mount Savage, passed away in her home on April 8, 2001, at her residence in Mount Storm, W.Va.
She is survived by a son; two daughters; 12 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Leona Bridges.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Grant Memorial Hospice, P.O. Box 1019, Petersburg, W.Va.
BERNADINE M. BITTINGER
LONACONING -- Bernadine Mildred Bittinger, 80, of Waterstation Run, Lonaconing, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at the residence of her daughter, Christina Elaine Poland, Hutton.
Born at Westernport, on April 17, 1920, a daughter of the late John W. Broadwater and Etta (Wilt) Broadwater Starkey.
Her husband, Carl Vernon Bittinger died on May 4, 1981. She was also preceded in death by one brother, William Starkey.
She was a member of Bethel Pentecostal Holiness Church, Lonaconing.
Surviving are five children, Carl Edward Bittinger and wife Ginny, Barton, Frances Mary Pratt and husband Milton, Angola, N.Y., Donna Lee McKenzie, Cumberland, Christina Elaine Poland and husband Samuel, Hutton, and Randel Vernon Bittinger and wife Kimberely, Lonaconing; 29 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Bittinger, Keyser, W.Va.; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing, Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at Bethel Pentecostal Holiness Church, Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. George Loar officiating. The body will be taken to the church by noon.
Interment will be in Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
Grandsons serve as pallbearers.
CHRISTINE B. SHANHOLTZ
THREE CHURCHES, W.Va. -- Christine B. Shanholtz, 77, of Three Churches, former resident of Ridgeley, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Born on Nov. 14, 1923, in Three Churches, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence W. Lewis and Mary E. Long Lewis. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Allen Junior Shanholtz in 1994; two sisters, Mary J. Cowgar and Juanita Ratliff; three brothers, William, Donald and John Lewis.
She was retired from Kinney Shoe Factory in 1985. She was a member of Zion Church of Christ, Augusta.
Surviving are one brother, Lawrence "Buck" Lewis and wife Wanda of Augusta; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the McKee Funeral Home, Augusta, Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held there Wednesday at 2 p.m. with John Ward, Minister, officiating.
Interment in Branch Mt. Cemetery, Three Churches.
