HELEN SMITH
Helen Smith, 78, Ridgeley, W.Va., died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born May 22, 1921, in Grantsville, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Cora (Beechy) Duckworth. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Earl Clayton Smith, on Jan. 9, 1971; one sister, Grace Grahn; and three brothers, Harold, Roy, and Everett Duckworth. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She attended Calvary United Methodist Church in Ridgeley for approximately 40 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Women’s Society of the church.
Surviving are one daughter, Shirley E. Grogg, Cumberland; one son, Gary Smith, Martin’s Ferry, Ohio; and three grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, Cumberland, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, Thursday. A service will be conducted at the Calvary United Methodist Church on Friday, Aug. 27, at 1 p.m. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
MARY G. GARRETT
Mary G. 'Gerry' Garrett, 83, Accident, died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, at the Goodwill Mennonite Home, Grantsville.
Born Aug. 17, 1916, in Weston, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Fred O. Skidmore Sr. and Bertha D. (Spicer) Skidmore. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harold D. 'Sam' Garrett, in 1993.
She was a member of the Oakland Church of Christ. She taught elementary education in the Mt. Zion, Vindex, and Sunnyside schools, and retired as the cafeteria manager of the Accident Elementary School.
Survivors include one son, Danny R. Garrett, Woodsboro; one grandson; and one great-granddaughter.
Friends will be received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday. A service will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, Aug. 28, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Russell McConnell and the Rev. Randy Cook officiating. Interment will follow in Garrett County Memorial Gardens, Oakland.
ROBERT A. PARRISH
Robert 'Robbie' Anthony Parrish, 6, died Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va., after a battle with cancer.
Born Jan. 5, 1993, in Oakland, he was the son of Carroll Parrish and Kimberly McLaughlin.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two half-brothers, Samuel Parrish, Harmon, W.Va., and Christopher Kaminsky, New Creek, W.Va.; his maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Matthews, Baltimore; and his paternal grandparents, Lee and Dora Parrish, Mt. Storm, W.Va.
Friends were received at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Kitzmiller, where a service was conducted at 1 p.m. today, Aug. 19, with the Rev. Donald E. Marple officiating. Interment was in the Schwinabart Cemetery, Elk Garden.

CAROLINE B. GIBSON
Caroline Belle Gibson, 76, Oakland, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, at Monongalia General Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.
Born April 13, 1923, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Cecil W. and Nellie (Adams) Waugh. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Willard R. 'Zack' Gibson, in 1970.
She owned and operated the Crellin Service Center.
Survivors include four sons, Richard R. Gibson, Oakland, Kenneth L. Gibson, Martinsburg, W.Va., Dennis A. Gibson, McHenry, and Steven M. Gibson, Oakland; two daughters, Shirley A. Henline, Terra Alta, W.Va., and Carol E. Gibson, Oakland; three brothers, Dodson Waugh and Charles Waugh, both of Berkeley Springs, and Donald Waugh, Charles Town, W.Va.; and 15 grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, where a service was conducted Wednesday, Aug. 18, with the Rev. Charles Teets officiating. Interment was in Garrett County Memorial Gardens, Oakland.

CLIFFORD A. PALMER SR.
Clifford A. Palmer Sr., 54, Oakland, died Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born May 2, 1945, in Welch, W.Va., he was a son of the late Frank and S. Alice (King) Palmer.
He was a retired coal miner, having worked for the Allied Chemical Co., Welch.
Survivors include his wife, Loiyresa P. (Owens) Palmer; two daughters, Sally J. Wiles and Linda S. Cuppett, both of Moorefield, W.Va.; two sons, Clifford A. Palmer Jr., Kitzmiller, and Roy F. Palmer, Oakland; one brother, James Palmer, Coughlintown, W.Va.; and three grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, where a service was conducted at 2 p.m. today, Aug. 19, with the Rev. William McCallister officiating. Following the service, the body was cremated.
COL. ISAAC M. COPELAND JR.
Col. Isaac M. 'Mike' Copeland Jr., USAF retired, 72, Chesapeake, died Sunday, July 4, 1999, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
A graduate of Maury High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1945 and served as a cryptographer with Naval communications. He was released from active duty in 1946 and later received his bachelor of arts degree from Duke University. He later enrolled in Duke Divinity School where he received his graduate degree in 1953. He entered the military chaplaincy while serving his first pastorate at Scottsburg (Va.) Baptist Church, and was commissioned in the U.S. Air Force in February 1954.
During his 32 years of military service his tours of duty included Japan, Korea, Turkey, and the Azores. His awards include the Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, and the Air Force Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster. He was also a distinguished graduate of the Air War College at Maxwell AFB in Montgomery, Ala.
An active member of the Tidewater Chapter of the Air Force Association since his retirement in 1984, serving as treasurer and vice president, he also remained active in other community and parish affairs.
Survivors include his wife, Florence (Sisk) Copeland, a former resident of Loch Lynn; one daughter, Clarice C. West, Virginia Beach, Va.; one son, Col. John Michael Copeland, Alexandria, Va.; one sister, Marjorie C. Hanbury, Chesapeake; and two grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Kellum Funeral Home, Virginia Beach, where a service was conducted Wednesday, July 7, with Chaplain Lt. Col. William Cuthriell officiating. Interment was in Rosewood Memorial Park.

NORMA M. PAUGH
Norma Mae Paugh, 78, Mount Storm, W.Va., died Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, at her home.
Born March 30, 1921, in Shallmar, she was a daughter of the late Howard and Anna (Boyce) Lions. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James 'Bogus' Paugh.
Survivors include five sons, Donald Paugh and Michael Paugh, both of Elk Garden, W.Va., Robert Paugh and Larry Paugh, both of Mount Storm, and Clyde Paugh, New Creek, W.Va.; four daughters, Peggy Rohrbaugh, Goshen, Ind., Barbara Cianelli and Brenda Bercosky, both of Marianna, Pa., and Cindy Duckworth, Elk Garden; one brother, Howard Lions, Morgantown, W.Va.; one sister, Birdie Brooks, Kitzmiller; 10 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Kitzmiller, where a service was conducted Sunday, Aug. 15, with the Rev. Wesley Georg and the Rev. Leslie Hipp officiating. Interment was in the Kalbaugh Cemetery, Elk Garden.

ERVIN YUTZY
Ervin 'Ivan' Yutzy, Swanton, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born in Frostburg, he was a son of the late Elmer and Emma (Baker) Yutzy.
He had been employed as a truck driver for Fike’s Vault Co., and also at the Somerset Foundry, Diehl’s Exxon Station, and Clapper’s Building Supply Co.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict and served on board the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier.
Survivors include his wife, Agnes Viola (McKenzie) Yutzy; three sons, Ivan Julius Yutzy, Somerset, Pa., Thomas Yutzy, Florida, and Gerald Keith Yutzy, Grantsville; two brothers, Cobey Yutzy, Frostburg, and Harold Yutzy, Mount Savage; two sisters, Mae Margaret Hoover, Frostburg, and Rosella Lottig, Philadelphia, Pa.; and six grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, where a service was conducted Monday, Aug. 16, with the Rev. Duane Frederick officiating. Interment was in the Meadow Mountain Mennonite Cemetery.

ETHEL C. MAUST
Ethel Catharine Maust, 95, Springs, Pa., and more recently a resident of the Goodwill Mennonite Home, Grantsville, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, at the nursing home.
Born June 5, 1904, in Rawlings, she was a daughter of the late Christian A. and Mary Ann (Keim) Beachy. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Walter Maust; one brother, Clyde Beachy; one sister, Hester Margroff; and one grandson.
She was a member of the Maple Glen Church of the Brethren, Fort Hill, Pa., and was a retired school teacher for the Garrett County Board of Education. She established the weaving program at Penn Alps and was the weaving teacher. She was the last surviving member of the first graduating class of Grantsville in 1923.
Survivors include one daughter, Jean Durst, Grantsville; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home. A service was conducted at the Maple Glen Church of the Brethren on Sunday, Aug. 15, with the Rev. Daniel J. Whitacre officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

SHIRLEY H. MASON
Shirley Helena Mason, 64, Frostburg, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cum-berland.
Born Oct. 6, 1934, in Avilton, she was a daughter of the late William B. and Mary A. (McKenzie) Garlitz. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence L. Mason, on Sept. 22, 1981; one daughter, Norma Evans; and an infant son.
She was a member of Old St. Ann’s Catholic Shrine and was employed for 18 years as a cook at Frostburg State University.
Survivors include four daughters, Janet Mason, Donna Geary, and Julie Winters, all of Frostburg, and Paula Hetz, Cumberland; two brothers, Harry and Albert Garlitz, both of Avilton; two sisters, Freda Minick, Barton, and Beulah Hetz, Avilton; and seven grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville. A service was conducted at Old St. Ann’s Shrine, Avilton, on Monday, Aug. 16, with Sister Joan Minella officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.
