OSCAR L. HAINES
OLDTOWN -- Oscar L. "John" Haines, 80, of Town Creek Road, Oldtown, was born in Keyser, W.Va., on Oct. 22, 1920, and left this world on Sunday, June 3, 2001.
He was the son of the late Walter L. Haines and Myrtle (Grapes) Haines. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Haines; brothers, Walter, Robert and Roy Haines; a son-in-law, John Packard Jr.; and a stepmother, Mary Bean Haines.
Mr. Haines was an avid hunter and trapper. He loved nature and the outdoors. He was a farmer in his early life. John retired from the B&O Railroad with 39 years of service. A 12-year Army veteran, he served during World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion Post 0013 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 09451.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Helen (Hartley) Haines; sons, John Haines and wife Elizabeth of Flintstone, Larry Haines and wife Judith of Potomac Park, and Randy Haines and wife Sherry of Wiley Ford, W.Va.; daughters, Myrtle Malone and husband Thomas of Cumberland, and Norma Packard of Oldtown; one sister, Mary Decker of Zephyrhills, Fla.; one brother, William "Bill' Haines of Frederick; grandchildren include, John Haines Jr., Brenda Hager, Kenneth Haines, Tina Bramble, Scott Haines, John E. Packard III, Lisa Marie Hynes, Kara Chastain, J.C. McDonald, Brent McDonald, Derek Haines and Marcus Haines, along with 21 great-grandchildren. John also had many special friends whom he loved dearly.
Friends will be received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Hwy., LaVale, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held in the funeral home chapel on Thursday, June 7, 2001, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Steve Landis officiating.
Interment will follow in Glendale Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded at graveside by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard. Mr. Chester "Dale" Burgess will present the flag.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Scott Haines, John Packard III, John Haines Jr., Ken Haines, Marcus Haines and Brent McDonald. Honorary pallbearers will be John Haines III, Derek Haines, J.C. McDonald and Terry Hagar.

HELEN G. WILSON
HAGERSTOWN -- Helen Gordon Wilson, 90, a resident of Ravenwood Lutheran Village, previously a resident of Jefferson Boulevard, Hagerstown, and formerly of Flintstone, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at the Washington County Hospital.
Born on Feb. 13, 1911, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Harry McClellan and Mary Ellen Wilson Gordon. Her husband, Marshall G. Wilson Jr. preceded her in death in 1956.
Her son, James M. and wife Yvonne of Hagerstown, survive her. Also surviving are grandsons, Seth E. Wilson of Hagerstown, and Nathan M. Wilson of Stanford, Calif.; one brother, Martin Gordon of Cumberland; and nieces and nephews.
She was a charter member of the Twiggtown Homemakers Club since 1948. She was also a member of the Greenhill Acres Homemakers Club, Chewsville Senior Citizens, and for many years was a volunteer at the Smithsburg Senior Nutrition facility.
A lifelong Methodist, she was a member of the Flintstone United Methodist Church. She attended Bethel United Methodist Church in Chewsville, and formerly was a member of the Murley's Branch United Methodist Church.
A viewing will be held at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 East Wilson Boulevard, Hagerstown, on Wednesday, June 6, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m.
The funeral will be Thursday, June 7, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the Murley's Branch Methodist Church, 18700 Williams Road, NE, Flintstone, MD 21530, with a viewing one hour prior to the service at the church. Pastor Thomas Landaker will officiate.
Interment will be in Green Meadow cemetery on Breakneck Road, Flintstone.
SARAH R. CLAAR
THOMAS, W.Va. -- Sarah Rebecca "Sally" Harrison Rohrbaugh Claar, 92, a resident of Cortland Acres Nursing Home, Thomas, formerly of Route 1, Box 132, Elk Garden, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, June 4, 2001.
Born on May 3, 1909, in Altamont, Md., she was the daughter of the late James W. and Sarah C. (Tasker) Harrison. After her mother died, she resided at the Burlington Orphanage until the age of seven, when she went to live with her loving and caring foster parents, Deburney L. and Anne A. (Stewart) Whitacre. She remained their loving daughter until the time of their deaths. Twice married, Mrs. Claar was preceded in death by her first husband, Burley L. Rohrbaugh in 1973, and her second husband, Ira G. Claar in 1992; two brothers, Forrest W. Harrison and Statton H. Harrison; two sisters, Otelia M. Thrush and Edith C. Doll; and a granddaughter, Sheila Sherwood. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Claar was a homemaker. She was Pentecostal by faith and attended the Piedmont Church of God and Keyser Church of God for many years.
Surviving are three daughters, Eloise M. Sherwood, Elk Garden, Betty J. Jairl, Keokuk, Iowa, and Elsie R. Getz, Lake City, Fla.; two sons, Glenn W. Rohrbaugh, Celina, Texas, and B. Dwight Rohrbaugh, Elk Garden; 15 grandchildren, Michael Sherwood, Elk Garden, Rebecca Spiker, Keyser, Sharon Brown, Steven Kline and John Kline, all of Keokuk, Vanessa Jairl Harl, Niota, Ill., Shelva Getz Mason, Hancock, Md., Andy Getz, Lake City, Robert Andrews, Seattle, Wash., Shirley Rohrbaugh Stuck, The Dalles, Ore., Connie Rohrbaugh Parsons, Fort Ashby, Janine Rohrbaugh, Leilani Rohrbaugh, Wendy Donahue and David Donahue, of Winchester, Va.; 23 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several stepchildren.
Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Friday at 2 p.m. with Pastor Brenda Shreve officiating.
Interment will be in the Thrush Cemetery, Antioch.
Serving as pallbearers will be Michael Sherwood, Ronald Spiker, Freddy Harrison, Richard Biser, Paul Adams and Galen Roberts.

ERNEST B. BILLMEYER SR.
CUMBERLAND -- Ernest B. Billmeyer Sr., 83, of the Cumberland Arms Apartments, formerly of Ridgeley, W.Va., died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born on March 10, 1918, in Gilmore, he was the son of the late George Billmeyer and Julia C. (Bennett) Billmeyer Bennett. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Jaunice Nadine Billmeyer on Dec. 11, 1991; his stepfather, Russell Bennett; one brother, George Jack Billmeyer; and one sister, Mary Bone.
Mr. Billmeyer was a retired salesman for Montgomery Wards. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Second Baptist Church, a former Lay Pastor of the First Brethren Church, member of the Gideons International, the Ridgeley Senior Citizens and the Cumberland Senior Citizens.
Surviving are three daughters, Carole "Nadine" James, Cumberland, Annafaye C. Hare and husband Ronald, Ridgeley, and Cynthia A. Corley and husband Dave, Corriganville; one son, Ernest B. Billmeyer Jr. and wife Laureen, Glen Burnie; one brother, Frederick Billmeyer and wife Josephine, Hagerstown; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at Second Baptist Church on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Sherrill A. Dillon officiating. Friends will be received at the church one hour prior to the service from 9 until 10 a.m.
Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap, Flintstone. Military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
Pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be great-grandsons.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the 4-H Scholarship Fund or the Second Baptist Youth Ministries Fund.
VIOLA M. HELFERSTAY
LONACONING -- Viola M. Whiteman Helferstay, 76, of Castle Hill, Lonaconing, died June 3, 2001, at Egle Nursing Home, Lonaconing.
Born in Lonaconing on April 18, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Jacob Getson and Leah (Duckworth) Getson. She was also preceded in death by her two husbands, James Whiteman in 1958, and Jake Helferstay in 1983; four brothers; and one sister.
Mrs. Helferstay was a member of First United Methodist Church, Lonaconing. She was a former employee of the Celanese Fibers Corp. and Home Health Care of Allegany County. She was a graduate of Central High School in 1943. She was a Blood Donor belonging to the Gallon Club. Mrs. Helferstay was formerly active with the George's Creek Ambulance Service, Lonaconing.
Surviving are one daughter, Jean Lynn Durst, Lonaconing; three sons, James F. Whiteman Jr., Tomsbrook, Va., Thomas Whiteman, San Antonio, Texas, and Jacob H. Whiteman, Cheyene, Wyo.; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Eline, Cumberland; one brother, Jake Getson, Conneaut, Ohio; one special niece, Leah Jo Harris, Jessep; and other numerous nieces and nephews.
Her body was donated to the Maryland Anatomy Board.
A Memorial Service will be held at Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing, on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Richard Mortimore officiating.
Friends will be received at the funeral home from 12 noon until the service time at 1 p.m.
Inurnment will follow at a later date in Frostburg Memorial Park, Frostburg.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be sent to First United Methodist Church, Lonaconing, or George's Creek Ambulance Service, Lonaconing.
