OLIVE E. TURNER
CUMBERLAND -- Olive Ethel Virginia Turner, 101, of the Cumberland Nursing Home, formerly of Oak Street, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at Memorial Hospital.
Born on Dec. 13, 1899, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late George W. and Minnie Bell (Talley) Freeland. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Alfonso Turner; and two brothers, Earl Freeland and Lloyd R. Freeland.
Mrs. Turner was a homemaker. She was a member of Holy Cross Episcopal Church.
Surviving are one son, Thurl Edgar Turner and wife Harriett J.; one grandson, Timothy Thurl Turner; one great-grandson, Joshua Timothy Turner; one sister-in-law, Charlotte Freeland; two nieces, Eleanor Snider and Carol Andrew and husband Terry, all of Cumberland; four nephews, William Freeland, Havre de Grace, Robert Freeland and wife Julie, North Canton, Ohio, Ronald Freeland and wife Helen, Pottsville, Pa., and David Freeland and wife Andrea, Manassas, Va.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with Father Warren Frederick officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
STANLEY FRIEND
OAKLAND -- Stanley "Bud" Friend, 71, of Oakland, died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at the University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore.
Born on Jan. 1, 1930, in Turner Douglas, W.Va., he was the son of the late Bruner Friend and Edith (Sines) Friend. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Matthews and Ruby Fike; two brothers, Delbert Friend and Clarence Friend; and a half brother, Garland Friend.
Mr. Friend was retired from the Buffalo Coal Company, where he ran the warehouse for 23 years and mined coal for 17 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran, a member of the Shady Dell Chapel, where he served as a Deacon, and a member of the NRA.
Surviving are his wife, Wilma (Shreeve) Friend; one son, Steven B. Friend, Oakland; one daughter, Daisy Murray, Oakland; one brother, Donnie Friend, Charleston, W.Va.; one sister, Alice Moats, Terra Alta, W.Va.; and five grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the Shady Dell Chapel on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Ivan Ackerman and the Rev. Donald Upole officiating.
Interment will be in the Beckman Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded at graveside by members of local veterans organizations.
JOHN W. SWAN
LAVALE -- John W. Swan, 88, went to join his beloved wife, Catherine, on the evening of Friday, June 1st.
He was a longtime resident of LaVale. He died at Lions Manor.
John was born on the 6th of March, 1913, in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was the second youngest of 11 children raised by a wonderfully strong widowed mother. It was in these close family ties that he learned to cherish friendships and to enjoy the telling of a good story.
He served proudly in the Royal Air Force during WW II. Married Catherine Cormack in July 1938. He came to America in 1947 and worked 27 years for PEPCO, retiring in 1975. They lived in the Bethesda and Rockville area until moving to LaVale in 1986. John was widowed in 1990. He lovingly cared for his wife through her long illness.
John was a member of the Masonic Lodge and recently received recognition of his 50-year membership in the Order of the Eastern Star (Pentalpha Chapter 38).
John made friends wherever he went and loved to make people laugh. He liked to hike, camp and had a passion for golf. He worked hard and was a loving husband and father. He loved his church, family and all his friends. And they in turn were wonderful to him. He has now "traded in" his worn out body for a young and vibrant one and his twinkling humor will live on in our memories.
He is survived by his daughter Sylvia Vaught and her husband Lawrence of Pleasant Union, Pa., and his three grandsons, Kurt Gunlock, Chris Hoffman and Justin Hoffman.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Park Place United Methodist Church at 80 National Highway with Pastor Lee Brotemarkle presiding.
Reception for family and friends following the service.
OSCAR L. HAINES
OLDTOWN -- Oscar L. "John" Haines, 80, of Town Creek Road, Oldtown, was born in Keyser, W.Va., on Oct. 22, 1920, and left this world on Sunday, June 3, 2001.
He was the son of the late Walter L. Haines and Myrtle (Grapes) Haines. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Haines; brothers, Walter, Robert and Roy Haines; and a son-in-law, John Packard Jr.
Mr. Haines was an avid hunter and trapper. He loved nature and the outdoors. He was a farmer in his early life. John retired from the B&O Railroad with 39 years of service. A 12-year Army veteran, he served during World War II and the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion Post 0013 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 09451.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Helen (Hartley) Haines; sons, John Haines and wife Elizabeth of Flintstone, Larry Haines and wife Judith of Potomac Park, and Randy Haines and wife Sherry of Wiley Ford, W.Va.; daughters, Myrtle Malone and husband Thomas of Cumberland, and Norma Packard of Oldtown; one sister, Mary Decker of Zephyrhills, Fla.; one brother, William "Bill' Haines of Frederick; grandchildren include, John Haines Jr., Brenda Hager, Kenneth Haines, Tina Bramble, Scott Haines, John E. Packard III, Lisa Marie Hynes, Kara Chastain, J.C. McDonald, Brent McDonald, Derek Haines and Marcus Haines, along with 21 great-grandchildren. John also had many special friends whom he loved dearly.
Friends will be received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Hwy., LaVale, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held in the funeral home chapel on Thursday, June 7, 2001, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Steve Landis officiating.
Interment will follow in Glendale Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded at graveside by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard. Mr. Chester "Dale" Burgess will present the flag.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Scott Haines, John Packard III, John Haines Jr., Ken Haines, Marcus Haines and Brent McDonald. Honorary pallbearers will be John Haines III, Derek Haines, J.C. McDonald and Terry Hagar.

LOVANNA M. MCKENZIE
LONACONING -- Lovanna M. McKenzie, 89, formerly of 15 Island St., Lonaconing, died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at St. Vincent DePaul Nursing Home, Frostburg.
Born on May 19, 1912, in Lord (Klondike), she was the daughter of the late James and Christina (Patterson) Allen. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Ralph McKenzie in 1989; one daughter, Mary L. Alexander; one son, James H. McKenzie; two grandchildren, Mark E. Spiker and Dianne M. Grimes; a son-in-law, Gary L. Broadwater Sr.; five brothers; and two sisters.
Mrs. McKenzie was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Lonaconing, and the Sodality of the church. She was formerly employed by the Celanese Corp., and was a homemaker. Besides loving her family, she loved her church and cooking for everyone, especially Sunday dinners. All will miss her.
Surviving are three daughters, JoAnn Spiker and husband Everett of Midland, and Barbara McKenzie and Catherine Broadwater, both of Frostburg; one son, Melvin McKenzie of York, Pa.; one sister, Francine Yates; one brother, Harbart Allen; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the Boal Funeral Home, Lonaconing, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with Sister Joan Maenner officiating.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Lonaconing.
