ERNEST A. LINDSAY
LAVALE -- Ernest A. Lindsay, 90, of Helman Drive, LaVale, died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at his residence.
Born on Nov. 12, 1910, in Williamsport, he was the son of the late Albert Lindsay and Leslie V. (Brewer) Lindsay. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Sara (Gearhart) Lindsay, who died on Jan. 19, 1998.
Mr. Lindsay was the Division Sales Manager for the Western Maryland Railway in Cumberland, retiring on Feb. 1, 1974, after 44 years of service. He was a member of Centre Street United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Men's Club. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge #601 A.F&A.M. of Lakewood, Ohio, and a 10-year member of Ohr Lodge #131 A.F.&A.M. of Cumberland, a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies and Antioch Commandery #6 Knights Templar York Rite, both of Cumberland, and the Ali Ghan Shrine Temple. He was a member of the Maryland and National Society Sons of the American Revolution, and a veteran of World War II, he served in the Navy as a Yeoman, Second Class.
Mr. Lindsay was the last surviving member of his immediate family and is survived by a number of cousins, nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Kight Funeral Home, 309-311 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Lloyd B. McCanna officiating.
Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap.
Pallbearers will be from the Centre Street United Methodist Men's Club.
Ohr Lodge #131 A.F.&A.M. will hold a memorial service at the funeral home on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
Military graveside honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
Mr. Lindsay has requested that donations take the form of contributions to Centre Street United Methodist Church, 217 N. Centre St., Cumberland, MD or the Ali Ghan Shrine Temple Transportation Fund, P.O. Box 1416, Cumberland, MD 21502.
HARRY R. CAMPBELL
GRANTSVILLE -- Harry Ronald Campbell, 71, of 39 S. Old Shade Hollow Road, Grantsville, died Saturday, June 2, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born May 7, 1930, in Detroit, Mich., he was a son of the late James E. and Clara (Hoenshell) Campbell. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Leah Mae (Hetrick) Campbell on March 31, 1976; and one daughter, Bonita Self on Nov. 5, 1984.
Mr. Campbell was of the Mennonite faith. He was a retired kiln operator for Harbison-Walker Refractories with 41 years of service and also served numerous terms as President of U.S.W. Local 14404. He was also a U.S. Air Force veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Larna Rae (Bittinger) Campbell; three sons, Richard Lee Campbell, Jack Edward Campbell and wife Deborah, and Alan Dale Campbell and wife Margie, all of Grantsville; one brother, Dale Campbell, Akron, Ohio; six grandchildren, Bobbie Sebree, Jackie Fratz, Chad Campbell, Jason Campbell, Jessie Rollan and Teri Smith; and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his father and mother-in-law, Orval and Thelma Bittinger, Lonaconing, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted in the funeral home on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Joseph Snodgrass officiating.
Interment will be in Grantsville Cemetery.
Expressions of sympathy may be directed to either the Heart Association, Diabetes Foundation or to the charity of the donors choice.
ESTA M. WILLISON
CUMBERLAND -- Esta Marie Willison, 70, of 15507 Winslow St., SW, Cumberland, and residing at Cumberland Nursing Home, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at Memorial Hospital Hospice Unit.
Born on Aug. 8, 1930, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late John Granville Kerns and Florine (Brookman) Kerns.
Mrs. Willison was the founder of Professional Business Service in 1977, she owned and operated the service until her retirement in 1992. She was a member of Cresaptown United Methodist Church. A 1948 graduate of Allegany High School, she was recognized for 12 years of perfect attendance. She also attended Catherman's Business School. Her career in the professional world began with the University of Maryland and Kelly Springfield Tire and Rubber Company.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by her husband, Frederick Allen Willison, with whom she celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary on May 5, 2001; a daughter, Leslie Ann Bowen and husband Dennis, York, Pa.; two granddaughters, Lara Marie Bowen, Charlottesville, Va., and Becky Lynn Bowen, York; and a great-grandson, Donavin Williams, York.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Harold R. McClay Jr. officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
The family requests that memorials be made to Cresaptown United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or a charity of the donors choice.
M. ARLINE KNOTTS
CUMBERLAND -- M. Arline Knotts, 86, of Penn Ave., Cumberland, died Saturday, June 2, 2001, in Memorial Hospital.
Born Dec. 28, 1914, in Vindex, she was the daughter of the late Asa and Ina (Conner) Harris. She was predeceased in death by a son, George Thomas Knotts.
Mrs. Knotts was a member of the New Covenant United Methodist Church and was retired after 24 years of service in the business office of Memorial Hospital.
Surviving are her husband of 69 years, George H. Knotts; grandchildren, George E. Knotts and wife Michele of Ellerslie, and Regina A. Miller and husband J. Shawn of Frostburg; two great-grandchildren, George Lucas Knotts and Kristin Michele Knotts; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Hebb and husband Charles of Corriganville; and three sisters, Lena Robinette of Cumberland, Bernice Baker and husband Ray of Cumberland, and Vivian Cifranic of Cleaveland, Ohio.
Friends will be received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held in the funeral home chapel on Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Richard Jewell officiating.
Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland.
Pallbearers will be Bart Deneen, Shawn Miller, Fred Higson, Ray Baker, Roy Knotts, and Charles Hebb.
JAMES E. CLARK
FROSTBURG -- James E. Clark, 86, of 136 West Main St., Frostburg, died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Potomac Valley Hospital, Keyser, W.Va.
Born Jan. 18, 1915 in Finzel, he was the son of the late James and Anna Pearl (Burdock) Clark. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Beulah K. (Crowe) Clark in 1991; one brother, Alan Clark; and two sisters, Helen Caton and Catherine Folk.
Mr. Clark was a former coal miner, a self employed timberman, and retired as owner/operator of Clarks Gas and Grocery, Finzel. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman.
He was a member of St. Michaels Catholic Church, Frostburg, and he was a charter member of the Eastern Garrett County Volunteer Fire Dept.
Mr. Clark is survived by three sons, Earl J. Clark and wife Carol, Oakland, Charles W. "Bill" Clark, Frostburg, and Robert A. Clark and wife Alma, Frostburg; one daughter, Rosemary P. Streets and husband Raymond, San Mateo, Fla.; one brother, Paul Clark, Finzel; three sisters, Charlotte Opal, Betty Housel, and Shirley Blank; 12 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Fr. Paul Byrnes officiating.
Interment will be in the Emmanuel United Methodist Cemetery, Finzel.
