HARRY R. CAMPBELL
GRANTSVILLE -- Harry Ronald Campbell, 71, of 39 South Old Shade Hollow Rd., Grantsville, died Saturday, June 2, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born May 7, 1930, in Detroit, Mich., he was a son of the late James E. and Clara (Hoenshell) Campbell. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Leah Mae (Hetrick) Campbell, March 31, 1976; and one daughter, Bonita Self, Nov. 5, 1984.
Mr. Campbell was of the Mennonite faith. He was a retired kiln operator for Harbison-Walker Refractories with 41 years of service. He was also a U.S. Air Force veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Larna Rae (Bittinger) Campbell; three sons, Richard Lee Campbell, Jack Edward Campbell and wife Deborah, and Alan Dale Campbell and wife Margie, all of Grantsville; one brother, Dale Campbell, Akron, Ohio; six grandchildren, Bobbie Sebree, Jackie Fratz, Chad Campbell, Jason Campbell, Jessie Rollan, and Teri Smith and seven great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted in the funeral home on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Joseph Snodgrass officiating.
Interment will be in Grantsville Cemetery.
Expressions of sympathy may be directed to either the Heart Association, Diabetes Foundation, or to the charity of the donors choice.
ANNA LOUISE SMITH
ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- Anna Louise (Shober) Smith, 63, of 401 N. Armistead St. #510, Alexandria, died Friday, May 25, 2001, in Alexandria.
Born in Cumberland, she is the daughter of John William and the late Anna Louise (Edenhart) Shober. She was preceded in death by her husband, Reese Smith.
Ms. Smith was a member of St. Marks United Church of Christ and a 1955 graduate of Allegany High School in Cumberland.
She is survived by her daughter, Lisa S. Flynn, (same address); two sisters, Frances Lee Rinehart, Hagerstown, and Sharon Lynne Harvey, Virginia Beach; two nieces, Toni Rinehart and Tisha Harvey; a nephew, JR Harvey; a son-in-law, Christopher Flynn; and a grandchild, Nicholas Flynn.
Services and interment will be at Arlington National cemetery on Thursday, June 7, 2001, at 9 a.m.
EDITH M. CESSNA
CUMBERLAND -- Edith Mae Cessna, 88, of Cumberland, formerly of LaVale, died June 2, 2001, in her residence.
Born June 21, 1912, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late William and Della Pearl (Hill) Reynolds.
She was preceded in death by her husband Herbert Cessna Sr.; a daughter, Kathryn Lorraine Skinner; a granddaughter, Diane K. (Cessna) Mamich; sisters, Virginia Martz, Madeline Price, and Mary Smerick; and a brother, William Reynolds.
Mrs. Cessna was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Cumberland, and was a former member of Park Place United Methodist Church, LaVale. She was the past district representative for the United Methodist Churches, active in many activities at Park Place Church. She was a member and historian of the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary also a member and past president of the LaVale Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She handmade many craft dolls and teddy bears for the doll show. One of her greatest pleasures was sharing her camp in Springfield, W.Va., with her family and friends. She looked forward to her annual family reunion. She touched everyone's lives that knew her. She will be missed by all.
Surviving are two sons, Herbert "Buzz" Cessna Jr. and wife Delores of Frostburg, and Timothy Allen Cessna of Aberdeen; three daughters, Joan Reuschel and husband Carl of Newark, Del., Mary Heinrich and husband Ronald (Gus) of Oldtown, and Sue Holt and husband Alan of Baltimore; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great great-granddaughter.
Friends will be received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held in the Christ United Methodist Church 4th and Race Streets, Cumberland, on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Max Greenfield officiating. Friends will also be received one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Michael Heinrich, Daniel Heinrich, Carl (Dutch) Reuschel Jr., Mark Holt, Brian Cessna, and Edgar Bower.
Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mrs. Cessna to the Christ United Methodist Church, 4th and Race Street, Cumberland, MD 21502, Salvation Army, 701 E. First St., Cumberland, MD 21502, or to Western Maryland Health Systems Hospice Unit, 900 Seton Drive, Cumberland, MD 21502.
MICHAEL A. RINGLER
CUMBERLAND -- Michael Allen Ringler, 46, of Cumberland, formerly of Rockville, went to be with the Lord on Friday, June 1, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital
Born on Aug. 17, 1954, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of Lois (Fridley) Ringler, Cumberland, and the late Leon E. Ringler.
Mr. Ringler was a 1971 graduate of Rockville High School. He had 22 years of service with the U.S. Postal Service, where he retired as a supervisor. Following his retirement, Mr. Ringler entered Liberty University, where he earned his doctor of divinity degree. Mr. Ringler also had a degree in photography. He enjoyed photography as a hobby and was an accomplished guitarist. Mr. Ringler also enjoyed spending time at his condo in Ocean City. He attended Central Assembly of God Church.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Ringler is also survived by one daughter, Anna Marie Ringler, Baltimore.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m.
The funeral service will be conducted from the funeral home Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. William H. Bice officiating.
Interment will be in Fort Ashby Cemetery.
MARY L. (MURPHY) THOMAS
KEYSER, W.Va. -- Mary Louise (Murphy) Thomas, 92, of 22 E St., Keyser, died on Friday, June 1, 2001, at her residence.
Born on March 12, 1909, in Franklin, she was the daughter of the late Cain and Susan (Hedrick) Murphy. She also was preceded in death by her husband, John Ersel Thomas, Sr. in 1974, whom she married
on September 10, 1932; one sister Lena (Murphy) Shobe; and three brothers Samuel Murphy, Earl Murphy and Cletus Murphy.
Mrs. Thomas was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Surviving are her son, John E. Thomas Jr. and wife Janet of Keyser; daughter, Carolyn A. (Thomas) Shook and husband Clarence of Creasptown; three grandchildren, John Scott Thomas, Kelly Ann (Thomas) Stanislawczyk and husband Jay and Jennifer Louise Shook; and a great-grandson, Jacob Stanislawczyk.
Friends will be received at the Markwood Funeral Home, Keyser on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.
Funeral services will be held at the Markwood Funeral Home on Monday, June 4, 2001, at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Louise Nealis officiating.
Interment will be held in Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
HERBERT M. "HERB" CARPENTER
HYNDMAN, Pa. -- Herbert Michael "Herb" Carpenter, 92, of Hyndman Road, Hyndman, died Saturday, June 2, 2001, at his residence.
Born March 7, 1909, in Hyndman, he was a son of the late Virgil Wallace and Lillian B. (Shaffer) Carpenter.
Surviving are a son, Delos M. Carpenter and wife Wanda (Holler), McHenry, Md.; a daughter, Sylva Ann Willison and husband Robert "Bob", Hyndman; three brothers, Glen Carpenter, Hyndman, Carl Carpenter, Ala., and Dale Carpenter and wife Mary (Deaner), Martinsburg; a sister, Lucille Mowry, Hyndman; a daughter-in-law, Sumi Carpenter, Calif.; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by, Marguerite Alverna (Porter) Carpenter, his wife of 63 years, in 1997; a son, Harlan J. Carpenter; and two brothers, Edgar Carpenter and Reuel Carpenter.
Mr. Carpenter was a teacher for 40 years and had been principal of Londonderry Middle School prior to his retirement from the Bedford Area School District. He served as Hyndman PTA president and took a leadership role in raising money for the building of a new school cafeteria, the most ambitious PTA project in Pennsylvania in its time.
He was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church. He was a charter member of the Hyndman-Londonderry Lions Club and had served as a club officer. For many years, he was a member of the Airstream Club and among his greatest joys were the years he spent traveling the U.S. with his beloved wife.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, June 4, 2001, at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, 169 Clarence St., Hyndman.
Funeral services and committal will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 5, 2001, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Julie L. Applegate officiating.
Interment will be in Hyndman Cemetery.
