VERA A. ECKARD
Vera Alma (Breedlove) Eckard, 81, Ridgeley, W.Va., died Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999, at her home.
Born July 12, 1918, in Los Angeles, Calif., she was a daughter of the late Clyde W. and Aretta (Cosner) Breedlove. She was also preceded in death by her husband, George Eckard, in 1977.
She was a member of Gold Star Post 6542 Ladies Auxiliary, Ridgeley, where she served as chaplain for over 25 years.
Survivors include two sons, Ronald Eckard, North Carolina, and Donald Eckard, Short Gap, W.Va.; two daughters, Sandi Blubaugh, LaVale, and Carol Garlitz, Frostburg; one sister, Pearl Ross, New Cumberland, Ohio; a half-sister, Reva Thomas, Oakland; two half-brothers, Arlie Breedlove, Accident, and Larry Breedlove, Shardon, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, Cumberland, where a service was conducted Tuesday, Aug. 17, with the Rev. Ed Dickel officiating. Interment was in the Fort Ashby (W.Va.) Cemetery.

J. THOMAS MALADY
J. Thomas Malady, 76, Pittsburgh, died Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, at the Manor Care Nursing Home, Bethel Park, Pa.
Born Aug. 21, 1922, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late John A. and Florence (Hunt) Malady. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Malady Clark and Regina Malady Shunk.
He had been a sales engineer at Magnetek.
Survivors include his wife, Lois F. Malady; three daughters, Barbara Horner, Greensburg, Pa., Janice Shafer, Oakland, and Sharon Gawaldo, Coraopolis, Pa.; one son, Jack Malady, Pittsburgh; and 10 grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be at St. Sylvester Church, Pittsburgh (Brentwood), on Friday, Aug. 20, at 11 a.m. Inurnment will be in the Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to the Deer Park Volunteer Fire Department.
The John F. Slater Funeral Home, Pittsburgh, was in charge of arrangements.
PEARL I. SECRIST
Pearl Ida Secrist, 80, Elk Garden, W.Va., Elk Garden, W.Va., died Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999, at Grant County Hospital.
Born Feb. 1, 1919, in Gorman, she was a daughter of the late Harry A. and Lilly (Cosner) Brown. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Virgil A. Secrist.
Survivors include her stepmother, Ida Brown, Leadmine, W.Va.; five sons, William Secrist, Fort Ashby, W.Va., Andrew Secrist, Westernport, Roger Secrist, Petersburg, W.Va., Melvin Secrist, Kitzmiller, and Kenny Secrist, Meyersdale, Pa.; eight daughters, Wanda Coleman, Silver Spring, Martha Beavers, Western-port, Betty Kidwell, Laurel, Wilma Howdyshell, Kitzmiller, Lilly Moats, Crellin, Mary Harvey, Elk Garden, and Linda Moats, Horse Shoe Run, W.Va.; three half-sisters, Patty, Jackie, and Ida; 46 grandchildren; 67 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Friends were received at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Kitzmiller, where a service was conducted Monday, Aug. 16, with the Rev. Tom Brackett officiating. Interment was in the Kalbaugh Cemetery, Elk Garden.
ELMER E. FIKE
Elmer E. Fike, 63, Oakland, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, at his home.
Born Sept. 27, 1935, in Mt. Zion, he was a son of the late Walter G. and Nora F. (Knox) Fike. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, William Fike and Stuart Fike.
He was a retired truck driver for the Seagram’s Co., Baltimore, and attended the Gorman-Oak Grove Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Tammy Welling, Oakland; three sisters, Beulah Beeman, Oakland, Violet Helmick, Gormania, W.Va., and Janet Friend, Oakland; two brothers, Harold Fike, Mtn. Lake Park, and Dennis Fike, Oakland; and two grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, where a service was conducted Saturday, Aug. 14, with the Rev. D. Paul Goldizen and the Rev. Barbara Fike officiating. Interment was in the Deep Creek Baptist Cemetery.
MADELINE B. MASTERS
Madeline B. 'Dolly' Masters, 75, Oakland, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999, at her home.
Born July 6, 1924, in Lewis County, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late James S. and Pamela J. (Long) Messenger. She was also preceded in death by two husbands, Hubert Hefner Sr., in 1964, and Clifford Masters, in 1973; one son, Hubert Hefner Jr.; one daughter, Delores J. Hefner; two brothers, Gilbert Messenger and Sherman Messenger; one sister, Febie Butcher; and one great-grandchild.
She was a member of the Rocky Drean Assembly of God Church for 26 years.
Surviving are two daughters, Delane Donaldson, Weston, W.Va., and Evelyn Marsh, Bellevue, Ohio; two sons, Ray Hefner, Swanton, and James Masters, Oakland; two sisters, Stella Cole, Wooster, Ohio, and Martha Burkhammer, Bellefontaine, Ohio; three bro-thers, Clarence Messenger and Raymond Messenger, both of Smithville, Ohio, and Daniel Messenger, Alum Bridge, W.Va.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland. A service was conducted at the Rocky Drean Assembly of God Church on Monday, Aug. 16, with the Rev. William Skipper officiating. Interment was in the Friend Cemetery, Oakland.

RUTH BITTINGER
Ruth Bittinger, 85, Grantsville, died Thursday, Aug. 5, at the Meyersdale Medical Center, Meyersdale, Pa.
Born July 20, 1914, in Swanton, she was a daughter of the late James and Nancy (Burkholder) Bittinger. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Russell S. Bittinger, and a daughter, Gloria McKenzie.
Mrs. Bittinger was a member of the Jennings Church of God and a homemaker.
Survivors include two sons, Willard and David Bittinger, both of Grantsville; three daughters, Dorothy Hare, Salisbury, Pa., Doris Engle, Meyersdale, Pa., and Arlene Friend, Swallow Falls; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville. A service was conducted at the Jennings Church of God on Sunday, Aug. 8, with the Rev. George Plants officiating. Interment was in the Grantsville Cemetery.

ARTHUR E. RODEHEAVER
Arthur Eugene Rodeheaver, 77, Grantsville, died Friday, Aug. 6, 1999, at his home.
Born Nov. 25, 1921, in Garrett County, he was a son of the late Joshua A. Rodeheaver and Emily (Moon) Rodeheaver. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Alma Elizabeth Rodeheaver.
Mr. Rodeheaver was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired branch chief from the U.S. Government.
Survivors include his wife, Marian K. Rodeheaver; one son, Larry E. Rodeheaver, Stafford, Va.; one daughter, Faye D. Peacock, Rose Hill, Va.; one stepson, William E. Wright III, Baltimore; one stepdaughter, Mary W. Dodson, Baltimore; and six grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, where a service was conducted on Sunday, Aug. 8, with the Rev. David Martin and the Rev. Curtis Peacock officiating. Interment was in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Military rites were accorded at the cemetery by local veterans organizations.

NELSON THOMASSON III
Nelson Thomasson III, 86, Mtn. Lake Park, died Friday, Aug. 7, 1999, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born April 24, 1913, in Chicago, he was a son of the late Nelson Thomasson Jr. and Indie (Gardiner) Thomasson. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Betty (Cantrelle) Thomasson.
Mr. Thomasson was a retired executive of the Scott Paper Company.
Survivors include two daughters, Indie G. Cather, Alexandria, Va., and Mary Lee Nelson, Chino Valley, Ariz.; one son, Nelson Thomasson IV, Mtn. Lake Park; one brother, Norton Thomasson, Scottsdale, Ariz.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A service was held Sunday, Aug. 8, at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, Oakland, with the Rev. Chip Lee officiating. Interment was private.
The Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, was in charge of the arrangements.
KEITH R. WHEELER
Keith Ray Wheeler, 78, Kitzmiller, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born Feb. 2, 1921, in Brownsville, Pa., he was a son of the late Raymond and Edna (Mayhorn) Wheeler.
Mr. Wheeler was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and retired from the Patapsco and Back River Railroad.
Survivors include his wife, Betty (Diehl) Wheeler; one son, Mark Wheeler, Kitzmiller; one daughter, Claudia Yearick, Baltimore; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Friends were received at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Kitzmiller, where a service was conducted on Friday, Aug. 6, with the Rev. Donald Nelson officiating. At Mr. Wheeler’s request, his body was cremated.
EDWARD G. WHETZEL JR.
Edward G. Whetzel Jr., 72, Deep Creek Lake, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 1999, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born May 28, 1927, in Pittsburgh, Pa., he was a son of the late Edward G. Whetzel Sr. and Helen (Parker) Whetzel.
Mr. Whetzel was a retired business manager in the lumber industry. He was a member of the Deep Creek Yacht Club and a past master of Pittsburgh Lodge 45, A.F. & A.M.
Surviving are his wife, Ellen (Foley) Whetzel; one son, Edward G. Whetzel III, Allison Park, Pa.; and two grandchildren.
A service was held at the Deep Creek Yacht Club on Sunday, Aug. 8, with the Rev. Michael Robinson officiating. Interment was private.
Arrangements were handled by the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland.
