JAMES A. VANMETER SR.
WELLERSBURG -- James A. VanMeter Sr., 63, of Wellersburg, left us for a better place on May 27, 2001.
He was born on April 4, 1938, in Cumberland. He was predeceased by his mother, Lily Johns Porter; his father, James Garfield VanMeter; stepfather, Elmer Porter; a daughter, Tammy Michele VanMeter; sisters, Delores Knisely and Darlee Baker; a brother, George VanMeter; an uncle, Lloyd F. Lease, who left this world a day ahead of our Jim. They are together in heaven now and still looking out for their loved ones. He was a father figure and mentor to his nephews, whom he loved so much.
Mr. VanMeter was a member of the Apostolic Lighthouse Pentecostal Church. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was recently retired from CSX after 30 years of service and looked forward to spending his retirement with his family and friends. He loved to hunt and was an avid gardener.
Always a loving and devoted husband, father and friend, he left behind his wife of 36 years, Linda (Gerhart) VanMeter; a daughter, who adored him, Amy Long and husband Frank; his son, whose best friend was his father, James A. VanMeter Jr. and fiancee, Sara Shrewsberry; two brothers, Donald VanMeter and wife Sue, David VanMeter and wife Judy; sisters, Erma Parker and Yvonne Meyers; and numerous nieces and nephews, which he was a loyal father figure to.
Friends will be received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Joint Funeral Services of Mr. VanMeter and his uncle, Lloyd F. Lease will be held in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at 12 noon with Pastor James R. Glass officiating.
Interment will follow in the Zion Luthern Reform Church Cemetery, Wellersburg. Preceding his interment will be the interment of his uncle, Lloyd F. Lease in the Cook Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded at graveside by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
Pallbearers will be Joseph Parker, Ray Parker, Billy Knisely, Huck Backer, David VanMeter Jr. and Ralph Tressler Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Ralph Tressler Sr., William Twigg, Darrell Glass, John Lease, Herb Baker, Donald VanMeter and David VanMeter Sr.
Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Jim to the Apostolic Lighthouse Church, c/o Pastor James R. Glass, 12816 Mt. Savage Road, NW, Mount Savage, MD 21545.
The family invites friends to join them at the Barrellville Outdoor Club following the services at the cemetery to celebrate the life of James A. VanMeter and Lloyd F. Lease.
His time with us was short, but the love, laughter and the special way he touched our lives and hearts will remain with us forever. Your special sense of humor and the laughter you gave us will echo through and around us forever. Thank you beloved husband, dad and friend for being you.
WILLIAM B. MCKINLEY JR.
MIDLAND -- William B. McKinley Jr., 52, of Midland, died Friday, May 25, 2001, at Memorial Hospital.
Born on Aug. 28, 1948, in Frostburg, he was the son of the late William B. McKinley Sr. and Marie (Ricker) McKinley.
Mr. McKinley was a 1966 graduate of LaSalle High School, a 1971 graduate of West Penn Hospital, School of Respiratory Therapy and a 1988 graduate of Ottawa University, B.S. of Health Care Administration. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Midland. He was awarded the Archdiocese Medal of Honor in November 1996. Mr. McKinley was a 35 year employee of Sacred Heart Hospital, now a part of Western Maryland Health System. He was also the Systems Director of the Neurology, Pulmonary and Respiratory Departments and the Home Care Consultant for the Western Maryland Health System. He was the Advisory Committee Chairman at Allegany College School of Respiratory and a member of the Fore Sisters Golf Club.
Surviving are his wife of 29 years, Mary Rita (Burns) McKinley; one daughter, Molly McKinley, Owings Mills; one son, Michael McKinley, at home; mother-in-law, Rita Burns, Midland; two sisters, Jacqueline Marsh and husband Tom, Westernport, and Kathy Hast and husband Jim, Hagerstown; one brother, Greg McKinley and wife Heidi, Frostburg; nieces and nephews, Troy and Stacey Marsh, Atlanta, Ga., Adam Marsh, Denver, Colo., Maria Marsh, Westernport, James and Matthew Hast, Hagerstown, Jessie, Melissa and Nicholas McKinley, Frostburg.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Cresaptown, on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
Mass of a Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. with the Father Paul A. Byrnes as celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Midland.
Pallbearers will be Frank and Ed Buckley, Tom and Troy Marsh, Dr. Richard Schmitt and Joseph Lazorchak.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Respiratory Staff of the Western Maryland Health System and Jim Stakem, John Violante, Harry Devlin and Pat McMahon.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph's Church, Midland, or the William B. McKinley Jr. Respiratory Scholarship Fund at Allegany College.
BERNICE L. FRIEND
UNIONTOWN, Pa. -- Bernice Lucille Friend, 74, of Uniontown, died on Friday, May 25, 2001, at Montefiore Hospital in Pittsburgh.
She was born in San Run on April 24, 1927, and was the daughter of the late Charles R. Carr and Mary Alberta (DeWitt) Carr. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by four brothers, Thomas, Joseph, Charles Jr. and Donald Carr.
Surviving are seven sons, Arnold Friend and Mark Friend, both of Pompano, Fla., Richard Friend, James Friend, Jackson Friend, David Friend and Steven Friend, all of Uniontown; four daughters, Mary Uphold, Betty Wardle and Barbara Kulenovic, all of Uniontown, and Ruth Hare of McHenry; 22 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home in Oakland, Md., on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the Western Maryland Christian Center in Friendsville, Md., on Monday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Mike Robinson and the Rev. Dave Georg officiating.
Interment will be in the Sang Run Cemetery.
MARY E. MILLER
CUMBERLAND -- Mary E. Miller, 71, of 829 Columbia Ave., Cumberland, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, at Memorial Hospital.
Born on May 25, 1929, in Wellersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Ella (Conners) Petenbrink. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Raley and Rozella Piper.
Mrs. Miller was a retired seamstress for Undergarment Company. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. She was an avid bingo player, gardener, and flea market enthusiast. She loved her winter home in Florida. Mr. and Mrs. Miller celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on May 3, 2001.
Surviving are her husband of 50 years, Paul L. Miller; three daughters, Darlene Miller, Baltimore, Rosemary Scarpelli and husband James "Eddie" Scarpelli, LaVale, and Paulette Porter and husband Dave, LaVale; seven grandchildren, Paul, Ryan, Stacey and Bradley Norton, Andrew Scarpelli, and Raymond and Marshall Porter; two great-grandchildren, Samantha and Brandon; and four sisters, Vivian Krause and husband Robert, Homewood Addition, and Betty Harman, Rodella Swanger and husband Robert, and Loretta Hanekamp, all of Cumberland.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake will be conducted on Monday at 8 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at 9 a.m. with Monsignor Thomas R. Bevan as celebrant. Pastor Bernadette M. Ross, Pastor of LaVale United Methodist Church, will be present at the service.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be three grandsons, Raymond Porter, Paul Norton and Ryan Norton, and friends, Paul Lapp and Paul Lapp Jr.
The family requests contributions be made to St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
DOLORES M. MCCLAIN
HYNDMAN, Pa. -- Dolores M. McClain, 86, of 268 Hite Hollow Road, Hyndman, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, May 25, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born on April 28, 1915, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Henry Joseph Lindsay and Hilda Mary (Schlarb) Lindsay. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James H. McClain and a daughter, Lois J. McClain.
Mrs. McClain was a homemaker. She was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Cumberland.
She is survived by a daughter, Dottie Leister, Hyndman; a son, James McClain, Livonia, Mich.; a sister, Betty Dyer, Doylestown; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date.
Interment will be in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, Glenco.
