EVELYN M. COWGILL
CUMBERLAND -- Evelyn Marie Cowgill, 57, of East Greenbush, N.Y., formerly of Cumberland, died Monday, May 21, 2001, at the Medical facility for Special Care, Kingston, N.Y.
Born June 10, 1943 in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Delmer Cowgill and Hazel (Hockenberry) Cowgill. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Robert Cowgill.
Miss Cowgill was a member of the First Christian Church, Bedford Street, Cumberland.
Surviving are one sister, Carolyn Haines and husband Geoffrey, East Greenbush; one brother, Maynard Cowgill and wife Kim, Cumberland; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 11:30 a.m. with the Rev. Daniel G. Taylor officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland.
BARBARA J. SHEELEY
LONACONING -- Barbara J. Sheeley, 40, loving daughter of Leah S. Sheeley and the late Frederick H. Sheeley, of Port Charlotte, Fla. and summer residents of Lonaconing, passed away on May 22, 2001 in Port Charlotte, Fla.
She was born on Nov. 18, 1960 in Easton. She moved to Florida in 1976 with her family. Barbara graduated from Charlotte High School, Punta Gorda, in 1978 and received a degree in Business Administration from Edison College in Fort Myers. She was the executive secretary for Home Health Services of Charlotte County. Barbara was a member of San Antonio Roman Catholic Church and also worshipped with her family St. Charles Borromeo Roman Catholic Church in Port Charlotte.
She was the granddaughter of the late Peter F. Stakem and Bertha R. Stakem of Lonaconing. Barbara is survived by a brother, William Frederick Sheeley (Maureen) of Golden, Colo.; sisters, Carolyn Anne Sheeley and Mary Kay Stafford (Keith), of Port Charlotte; nephews, William Arthur Sheeley (Shelly) of Virginia Beach and Brandon Keith Stafford of Port Charlotte; niece, Kathryn Reed Perkinson (James) of Apex, N.C.; and two great nieces, Alicia Marie Sheeley of Virginia Beach and Ashlyn Reed Perkinson of Apex, N.C. Barbara will be missed by many other relatives and co-workers.
Visitation will take place on Friday, May 25, 2001 at the Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel from 7 to 9 p.m., with a Catholic Wake Service at 8 p.m. celebrated by Deacon Michael DiMeglio. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Saturday, May 26, 2001 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Roman Catholic Church by Father Nicholas McLoughlin.
Private inurnment will be at Royal Palm Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Barbara's name may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Boulevard, Sarasota, Fla. 34238. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
MAMIE M. (KESNER) LAYNE
SHORT GAP, W.Va. -- Mamie Marie (Kesner) Layne went to be with Jesus on Tuesday, May 22, 2001. She passed away in the home she shared with her daughter and family in Short Gap.
Mamie was born in Monongah, on July 27, 1903, and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was the daughter of Frances Belle (Cutty) Layne and William Layne, both of Monongah, and was the youngest sister of Daisy Layne Phillips, Adam "Buzz" Layne, Austin Layne, Harry "Shady" Layne, Charles "Cuke" Layne, and Johnny Layne.
Mamie was also preceded in death by an infant son, Jamie Layne Kesner, and a grandson, Phillip Wayne Peer.
She is survived by one daughter, Carolyn (Kesner-Peer) Myers and husband George; grandsons, Dale Peer and wife Suzanne, Tim Peer and wife Sue, David Peer and wife Chris; and a granddaughter, Sue Lynn (Peer) Mellon and husband Doug. She is also survived by grandsons, Will Myers and Jonathan Myers; granddaughters, Tricia (Myers) Fluharty and husband David, Chelsey Myers, and Bethie Myers; step-grandsons, Jeff Myers and Bill Myers; step-granddaughters, Resa (Myers) Shoemaker and husband Brent, Cindy (Myers) Senn, and Kim (Myers) Heffner. Mamie leaves nine great-grandchildren, Wendi, Jeanette, Jessica, Katrina, and Corlyss Peer, Charite Mellon, Phillip, Josh, and Alec Peer; step-great grandchildren, Tori (Smyth) Willis and husband Troy, Stacy and Beth Ann Heffner, Timmy Stevenson, Nicole, Ashly, and Shane Myers, Brent Lee and Brittney Shoemaker, Nicholas Myers, Quinton and Kayla Fluharty; and many nieces and nephews.
In the early 1900's, Mamie was a minister in the Assemblies of God. She began oil painting when she was 60 and continued that for many years.
At the age of 80, Mamie planted fruit trees in her yard in Short Gap, and canned fruit from those trees when she was in her 90's. She was blessed with wonderful neighbors for 32 years, Frank and Pearl Mace, Dick and Lola Brant, Ted and Kitty Brant, Wayne and Mary Feaster, Joseph and Cindy Hall, and Tim and Cara Malone, all who helped make it possible for her to remain in her own home until the age of 96.
For Mamie, the highlight of each year was the four day long Layne family reunion in Greenbank, hosted by her nephew, Bernard Layne and wife Ruth. There her own bedroom was always waiting and she was honored and pampered by all who attended.
While are hearts are heavy for our lose, we celebrate the successful completion of Mamie Marie Layne's long journey and her joyful reunion with her dear mommy that she lost on New Year's Eve when she was only 9 years old, and never stopped grieving for.
We know that all of us that know Jesus will join her soon, never to be parted again.
Friends may call at the Upchurch funeral Home, Inc., Rt. 28, Fort Ashby on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 10 a.m. by the Rev. Steve Schuessler.
Graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Bob Manning at 3:30 p.m.
Persons attending the graveside service will meet at 3 p.m., just across the Monongah Bridge.
CHARLYENE A. ADAMS
CRESAPTOWN -- Charlyene Ann Adams, 49, of 14101 Winchester Road, Cresaptown, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001 at Memorial Hospital.
Born Aug. 2, 1951, in Rahway, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Charles Leroy Barnhart and Frona Myrtle (Hunt) Barnhart.
She is survived by two daughters, Michelle Barnhart and husband Dale Weimer, Cresaptown, and Frona Cutter and husband Jeff Llewellyn, Midland; two sisters, Judy Cook and husband Gene, Colonia, N.J., and Francine Lambert and husband Larry, Newburg, W.Va.; and two grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m.
Services will be conducted on Thursday at 4 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Wayne R. Turner officiating.
Interment will be private.
EUGENE D. CRABTREE
CUMBERLAND -- Eugene Dale Crabtree, 90, of Dade City, Fla., formerly of Cumberland, died May 14, 2001.
Born Nov. 13, 1910, he was the son of the late John and Tracie Crabtree.
Mr. Crabtree was preceded in death by his wife, Stella; a son, John "Pete" Crabtree; three brothers, Bernard, Irvin "Mose" and Stanley "Babe" Crabtree.
Surviving are his son, Robert and wife, Sherri, Dade City; a sister, Clementine Whalley and husband, Joseph, of Cumberland; six grandchildren, Breanna, Robert, Michael, Michelle, Tracy and Tami; two step-grandchildren, Jenny and Billy.
Mr. Crabtree served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He was a glass blower all his life and is known from coast to coast for his famous glass paper weights.
Services and interment were held in Dade City.

CUMBERLAND -- Friends will be received for Lillian M. VanMeter at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. A Rosary Service will be held on Wednesday evening at 7:45 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Thursday at 11 a.m.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
