ARTHUR D. "BUBBY" REEL
MOOREFIELD, W.Va. -- Arthur D. "Bubby" Reel, 83, of Tannery Route, Moorefield, passed away quietly with his family Sunday evening, May 13, 2001.
Born on Feb. 11, 1918 in Petersburg, he was the son of the late Roy and Cora (Conrad) Reel. He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty years Bessie (Myers) Reel in March 1995, he was also preceded in death by one son, one granddaughter, one brother, and five sisters.
He was a member of the Old Fields Baptist Church and was a retired mechanic for the Montgomery County School Board in Maryland. Having lived alone since April 1995, the family appreciates the Hardy County Committee on Aging's Meals on Wheels Program during the last few months.
Surviving are four sons, Lester Hyre of Old Fields, Tom Reel of Manassas, Va., Robert Reel of Lancaster, Ohio, and Roy Reel of Cypress, Texas; one daughter, Esta Mae Mays of Stanford, Ky., and 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday at the Fraley Funeral Home in Moorefield.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 17, 2001 at the Fraley Funeral Home in Moorefield with the Rev. Ken Owens officiating.
Interment will follow at the Maple Hill cemetery in Petersburg.
After the committal service at the cemetery, the family will attend a dinner at the Old Fields Baptist Church.
Memorials may be directed to the Hardy County Committee on Aging, 409 Spring Ave., Moorefield, WV 26836.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Fraley Funeral Home of Moorefield.
JODY L. WHITACRE
LAVALE -- Jody Lee Whitacre, 28, of National Highway, LaVale, died Saturday, May 12, 2001, at Memorial Hospital Pediatric Unit.
Born on Feb. 22, 1973, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of Brenda D. Whitacre, LaVale.
Jody was a member of First Church of God, Cumberland, she was a student at Friends Aware, Cumberland Covenant Day Care and Ray of Hope.
Jody's tender smile and love, touched the lives and hearts of many people. She was the founding inspiration for the Ray of Hope agency, which provides residential and respite care services to a large number of the areas disabled children and adults. Ray of Hope currently supports 14 residential homes throughout the area and provides 24 hour assisted living care.
Besides her mother, she is survived by her maternal grandparents, Lester E. and Gertrude Porter, LaVale; she was surrounded by a very large and loving extended family. Jody was always blessed with many special friends and care givers.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Samuel Seletyn officiating.
Interment will be in Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be uncles, George W. Garlitz, Lester E. Porter Jr., Danny L. Porter and Robert L. Folk.
RUSSELL PAUL HOOPENGARNER
PIEDMONT, W.Va. -- Russell Paul Hoopengarner, 91, of Piedmont, died Sunday, May 13, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Dec. 8, 1909 in Elk Garden, he was the son of the late Samuel and Florence (Wallace) Hoopengarner. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Lucrecia (Hartman) Hoopengarner.
Mr. Hoopengarner retired from Kelly-Springfield Tire Company in 1973 as an engineer.
Surviving are four sons, Paul Hoopengarner and wife Kathy, Keymont, Harold Hoopengarner and wife Shirley, McCoole, Md., David Hoopengarner and wife Hanna, New Burn, N.C., and Richard Hoopengarner, Keyser; two daughters, Laurella Kimble, Cumberland and Betty Judy and husband Junior, Burlington; one sister, Frances Watts, Elk Garden; 24 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at Fredlock Funeral Home, Piedmont, Wednesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at Nethkin Hill Methodist Church, Elk Garden, Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Donald E. Marple and the Rev. Daniel Sears officiating. Friends will also be received at the church one hour prior to service.
Interment will be in Nethkin Hill Cemetery.
PAULINE S. KIDWELL
CUMBERLAND -- Pauline S. Kidwell, 94, resident of Cumberland from 1941-1971, died Aug. 20, 2000.
She worked at the Allegany County Library 10 years and was the widow of Courtney Kidwell, B&O YMCA General Secretary.
She is survived by her daughter, Jeanne and husband Leo T. Downey Jr., Boynton Beach, Fla., and four grandsons, Leo III and wife Rosemarie, Randalstown; Kevin and wife Janice, Shawnee, Kan.; Sean and wife Debbie, Harvey, La.; and Padraig and wife Lynn, Hobbs, N.M.; one great-granddaughter; and four great-grandsons.
Inurnment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park on Thursday at 1 p.m.
EVELYN GLADYS PORTER
CUMBERLAND -- Evelyn Gladys Porter, 93, a resident of St. Vincent de Paul Nursing Home, Frostburg for the past 4 1/2 years, formerly of Stewart Avenue and Fayette Street, Cumberland, died Sunday, May 13, 2001 at the nursing home.
Born June 20, 1907, in Cresaptown, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Mary Lula B. (Winters) Winterberg. She was preceded in death by her first husband Norbert B. O'Donnell; her second husband Frederick W. Porter; and one sister, Patricia R. Jacobs and her husband Albert. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Porter was a graduate of Allegany High School and Catherman's Business School. She was a former member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church. She was a member of Women's Civic Club and the Sacred Heart Auxiliary, where she had 4,800 volunteer hours in the gift shop. She was a frequent blood donor at the American Red Cross, where she was a member of the Gallon Club. She had a real estate license and assisted her husband in the real estate and insurance business with the firm of O'Donnell Real Estate and Insurance.
Surviving are two daughters, Lois J. McMullen and husband Hugh, Cumberland, and Carol L. Nagel, Virginia Beach; one step sister, Carol Miller and husband Gregory, Baltimore; seven grandchildren, Susan Jacobs Brewer and husband Regan, Issaquah, Wash, Betsy A. Sherrier and husband Stephen, Johnstown, Pa., Jack McMullen, Cumberland, Hugh A.McMullen and wife Carol, Silver Spring, Daniel F.McMullen, Baltimore County, Jamie Dickerhoof and husband John, Fayetteville, N.C., Kimberly Wilson and husband Gregory, Centerville; nine great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; step-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave. on Tuesday from 3 to 6 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated as SS Peter Paul Catholic Church on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. with Fr. William Moody as celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-laws. Honorary pallbearers will be Thomas Wigger, John McMullen Jr., Butch Ibanez, John F. Workmeister, and Lynn H. Workmeister.

ARNOLD GLEN "JOHN" FRIEND
MCHENRY -- Arnold Glen "John" Friend, 83, of 327 Kate's Mountain Road, McHenry, died Monday, May 14, 2001 at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born March 12, 1918, in Uniontown, Pa., he was the son of the late Wesley M. and Frances M. (Friend) Friend.
Mr. Friend was a member of Sang Run Christian Center and was a retired timberman. He served at a Pfc. with the 197th Field Artillery Battalion during World War II.
Survivors include seven sons, Arnold and Mark Friend, both of Pompano, Fla., Richard, James, Jackson, David, and Steven Friend, all of Uniontown; four daughters, Mary Uphold, Betty Wardle and Barbara Kulenovic, all of Uniontown; Ruth Hare, McHenry; one brother, Russell Friend, Oakland; one sister, Ruth Spiker, McHenry; one half brother, Ray Custer, Detroit, Mich.; 22 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 26722 Garrett Highway, McHenry, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Sang Run Christian Center with the Rev. Joseph Spiker officiating. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in the Sang Run Cemetery.
Military graveside rites will be accorded by area veteran's service organizations.
