MSGT. CHARLES BOOKMAN FAIR
RIDGELEY, W.Va. -- MSgt. Charles Bookman Fair (retired), 81, of Ridgeley, died Sunday, May 6, 2001 at New Hope II.
Born Nov. 28. 1919 on Hay St., Cumberland, he was the son of the late Cecil Jacob Fair and Viola Ruth (Trent) Fair. Mr. Fair moved to Ridgeley with his family on 1921, where he remained a citizen for the rest of his life.
He was preceded in death by his son, Michael in Dec., 1976; his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" (Geoghan) Daly Fair in March, 1978; a sister, Elanora Dawson in July, 1993.
MSgt Fair retired from the U.S. Army in July 1965 after 22 years of service, more than 10 years of which were overseas. He was awarded a Bronze Arrowhead for taking part in the D-Day landing on Omaha Beach, Normandy as well as U. S. Presidential Unit Citation. He was later awarded the Purple Heart with Oakleaf cluster (2nd award) and the Bronze Star, the World War II Victory Medal, and three campaign stars on his European Theater of Operations Medal. Later, while serving in Korea, he received three campaign stars on his Korean Service Ribbon, the United Nations Medal, the Army Commendation Medal and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation. Prior to entering the Army he was employed at the Celanese Corporation and after Army retirement he was employed in the Accounting Department, Kelly-Springfield Tire Co., from which he retired after 13 years in 1978. After retiring from the Army, he became active again in Knobley Mount Post 136, American Legion, of which he was a charter member and first commander. He was a life member of Gold Star Post 6452, VFW, and a life member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. HE has been a member of Calvary United Methodist since 1935, serving in many positions there. He served 10 years on the Ridgeley Town Council an many years on the Audit Committee of the County Untied Way.
He is survived by two sisters, Ruth Fair, Main Street, Ridgeley and Jean Hoffmaster and her husband Charles, Carpendale; also two sisters-in-laws, Nancy Geoghan and Mary Parry, Wolverhampton, England and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews in the United States, England, Wales, Kenya and New Zealand.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
The funeral service will be conducted from the funeral home on Tuesday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Dan Taylor officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Military honors will be accorded by the local combined veterans honor guard.

LOIS MAE YOUNKER
SOMERSET, Pa. -- Lois Mae Younker, 73, of Somerset, died Saturday, May 5, 2001 at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, Johnstown.
Born Aug. 19, 1927 in Meyersdale, she was the daughter of the late John Sylvester Bowser and Lula Belle (Riley). She was also preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Glenn Younker who died Nov. 24, 1974; two brothers, John E. and Earl Bowser and a sister, Wilma Reed.
Surviving are her children Ms. Joyce A. Bowser, Somerset and Mr. Duane A. "Rudy" Younker married
to the former Sharon Soroka, Rices Landing; four grandchildren, Bryan Bowser, Somerset, Mrs. Wayne (Katrina) Flann, Somerset, Steven A. Younker, Listie, and Shawna R. Bowser, Somerset; five great-grandchildren, Ashley, Shayla and Haley Bowser, and Eric and Alyssa Flann. She was the sister of Mrs. Betty Kosic, Confluence, Harold Bowser, Sipesville, and Roy Bowser, Confluence. She also had a close friend and companion, Samuel F. Wiedner Sr., Somerset.
She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cumberland, VFW Post 554 Auxiliary, American Legion Post 181 Auxiliary, Disabled American Veterans of Connellsville Auxiliary.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home, Somerset.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 9, 2001 at Hauger-Zeigler Funeral Home, Somerset, Pa., with the Rev. Stephen C. Sweyko officiating.
Interment will be in Somerset County Memorial Park
Contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 328 North Center St., Cumberland MD 21502.

JOHN ROBERT "JACK" MACVEIGH
CUMBERLAND -- John R. "Jack" MacVeigh, 77, of Cumberland, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at Memorial Hospital.
Born on April 9, 1924, in Omaha, Neb., he was the son of the late John Gerald and Gertrude (Greene) MacVeigh.
Mr. MacVeigh was a 1942 graduate of Bethesda/Chevy Chase High School, and a 1946 graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park, where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Economics and Accounting, from the College of Business Management. While in college, he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, where he served as the organization's president. Throughout his lifetime, he was active in this organization.
Mr. MacVeigh was retired president of Sell and Company, Inc., Maryland, Sell and Company, Inc., West Virginia, and T and W Sales Inc., Elkins, W.Va. While at Sell and Company, a wholesale food distributorship located in South Cumberland, Mr. MacVeigh served on the board of directors for the Nuggett Distributors of America and the Baltimore-Washington Frozen Food Association.
Mr. MacVeigh was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the Cumberland Country Club, the Deep Creek Lake Yacht Club, the local and national Antique Automobile Associations, life member of the University of Maryland Alumni Association, the Allegany County Historical Society, the Allegany County Republican Party, and the United Commercial Travelers. At the time of his death, he was serving on the board of directors of the Western Maryland Train Station and Museum.
Mr. MacVeigh was a former member of the Cumberland Junior Chamber of Commerce. While in that organization, he served on its board of directors. He was also a former member of the Cumberland Rotary Club of Rotary International and the University of Maryland's College of Business Management Alumni Board.
Surviving are his wife, Phyllis (Sell) MacVeigh; two daughters, Bretta Reinhard and husband G. Douglas, Cumberland, and Melissa K. MacVeigh, Richmond, Va.; one son, J. David MacVeigh and wife Carol J. Stowell, York, Pa.; one brother, George E. MacVeigh and wife Ellen G., Bethesda; and one grandson, Robert MacVeigh Reinhard, who is named after his paternal and maternal grandfathers.
Friends were received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, Md., on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake service was conducted Friday at 8:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Vernon Busch, OFM, Cap., officiating.
Interment was in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Cumberland.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Mr. MacVeigh may direct memorial contributions to the John R. and Phyllis Sell MacVeigh Scholarship at Frostburg State University, Frostburg, MD, or SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Cumberland, MD.
Pallbearers were his son, J. David MacVeigh; his nephew, John P. MacVeigh, Howard A. Buchanan, Thomas B. Finan, The Honorable W. Timothy Finan, Edward G. Huber Jr., Joseph L. Rienhard, John M. Robb Jr., The Honorable J. Frederick Sharer and Lynn H. Workmeister.
One honorary pallbearer was his grandson, Robert MacVeigh Reinhard.
