JOHN R. MACVEIGH
CUMBERLAND -- John R. "Jack" MacVeigh, 77, of Cumberland, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at Memorial Hospital.
Born on April 9, 1924, in Omaha, Neb., he was the son of the late John Gerald and Gertrude (Greene) MacVeigh.
Mr. MacVeigh was a 1942 graduate of Bethesda/Chevy Chase High School, and a 1946 graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park, where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Economics and Accounting, from the College of Business Management. While in college, he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, where he served as the organization's president. Throughout his lifetime, he was active in this organization.
Mr. MacVeigh was retired president of Sell and Company, Inc., Maryland, Sell and Company, Inc., West Virginia, and T and W Sales Inc., Elkins, W.Va. While at Sell and Company, a wholesale food distributorship located in South Cumberland, Mr. MacVeigh served on the board of directors for the Nuggett Distributors of America and the Baltimore-Washington Frozen Food Association.
Mr. MacVeigh was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the Cumberland County Club, the Deep Creek Lake Yacht Club, the local and national Antique Automobile Associations, life member of the University of Maryland Alumni Association, the Allegany County Historical Society, the Allegany County Republican Party, and the United Commercial Travelers. At the time of his death, he was serving on the board of directors of the Western Maryland Train Station and Museum.
Mr. MacVeigh was a former member of the Cumberland Junior Chamber of Commerce. While in that organization, he served on its board of directors. He was also a former member of the Cumberland Rotary Club of Rotary International and the University of Maryland's College of Business Management Alumni Board.
Surviving are his wife, Phyllis (Sell) MacVeigh; two daughters, Bretta Reinhard and husband G. Douglas, Cumberland, and Melissa K. MacVeigh, Richmond, Va.; one son, J. David MacVeigh and wife Carol J. Stowell, York, Pa.; one brother, George E. MacVeigh and wife Ellen G., Bethesda; and one grandson, Robert MacVeigh Reinhard, who is named after his paternal and maternal grandfathers.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, Md., on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake service will be conducted Friday at 8:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Vernon Busch, OFM, Cap., officiating.
Interment will be in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Cumberland.

MILDRED M. SMITH
HYNDMAN, Pa. -- Mildred Marie "Mickey" Smith, 76, of Bedford Street, Hyndman, died Thursday, May 3, 2001, at WMHS Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Born on June 14, 1924, in Hyndman, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Ardelia (Divelbiss) Tharp.
Surviving are William R. Smith, her husband of 56 years, whom she married
on Sept. 1, 1944; one son, William R. Smith and wife Deborah (Logsdon), Hyndman; two daughters, Barbara Wertz and husband Anthony, Manns Choice, Pa., and Susan Shore, Cumberland; three sisters, Helen Turner and husband Sam, Hyndman, Shirley Robinson and husband Verle "Robbie", Cumberland, and Eleanor Waugerman and husband Harry, Buffalo Mills; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter.
Mrs. Smith was a homemaker who had worked for Celanese Fibers Corporation, Cumberland, for a time. She had also worked Ed's Grocery and Horner's Market in Hyndman. She attended Grace UMC, Hyndman, regularly. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star 41, Bedford.
Mrs. Smith's husband and children will receive visitors from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 4, 2001, at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, 169 Clarence St., Hyndman.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, May 5, 2001, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Julie L. Applegate officiating.
Interment will be in the Hyndman Cemetery.
MCDERMOTT SERVICE
CUMBERLAND -- A memorial chapel service and interment of the cremains of C. William "Pick" McDermott of Stamford, Conn., and formerly of Cumberland, will be held at the Rocky Gap Maryland State Veterans' cemetery on Friday, May 4, at 11 a.m.
FLOYD A. ROACH
CUMBERLAND -- Floyd A. Roach, 88, of Allegany County Nursing Home, formerly of Grand Avenue went to be with the Lord Tuesday, May 1, 2001 at the nursing home.
Born April 12, 1913 in Island Ford, Va., he was the son of the late Jesse James and Laura (Moubray) Roach. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor F. (Neary) Roach, 1974; one son, Floyd Roach Jr.; one sister, Evelyn Randall; two grandchildren, Christopher Lee Roach and John A. Wiley, III.
Mr. Roach was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II and was retired from the Celanese Corporation, Cumberland. He was a member of the Cresaptown Eagles 2883; the Cumberland V.F.W. 1411, the Cumberland American Legion Post 13 and the Good Fellowship Club. Mr. Roach was a kind, caring and loving father, grandfather and friend, who will be sadly and deeply missed.
Surviving are one daughter, Gloria J. Wiley and husband John, Bowling Green; one son, Ronald E. Roach, Cumberland; one sister, Madeline Long, Harrisonburg, Va.; two brothers, Charles Roach and wife Janet, Grottoes, Va., Randolph Roach, Nevada; 8 grandchildren, Ronald Roach Jr., David Roach, Steven Roach, Wendy Rice, Cristina Hare, Rebecca Wiley, Kami Wiley, and Heidi Wiley; 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave. on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 12 p.m. with the Rev. Mike Huskins officiating.
Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
Military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
MARY (WILLIAMS) ARNOLD
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. -- Services for Mary (Williams) Arnold, 49, Harpers Ferry, formerly of Cumberland, will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Oakland United Methodist Church, 26 Oakland Terrace, Charles Town, with the Rev. Kent Tice and the Rev. JoAnne Alexander officiating.
Friends will be received at the church Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
A graveside service will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Hillcrest Burial Park, Cumberland with the Rev. John Hollis officiating.
HAROLD PAUGH
SWANTON -- Harold Paugh, 71, of Mount Zion, died Tuesday, May 1, 2001, in the Garrett Co. Memorial Hospital.
Born June 21, 1929 in Vindex, he was the son of the late Earl and Stella (Bosley) Paugh. Harold was also preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Jean Paugh; a brother, Curtis Paugh and a sister Laverda Duckworth.
Surviving is his wife, Merry (Leeson) Paugh, a son; Richard E. Paugh of Dundalk, four daughters; Catherine Tasker, Judy Garcia and Betty Jane Phillips all of Cross Timbers, Mo., and Connie May Paugh of Baltimore, 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Kitzmiller, on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Mount Zion Methodist Church with the Rev. Donald Nelson officiating.
Interment will be in the Mount Zion Cemetery.
ROY W. CORBIN
BURLINGTON, W.Va. -- Roy W. Corbin, 78, of Rt. 1, Box 88-H, Burlington, died Tuesday, May 1, 2001 at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born on Feb. 16, 1923 at Green Spring, he was the son of the late Reuben H. and Catherine (Cosner) Corbin. He also was preceded in death by two sisters; Mary Riffle and Muriel Farris and one brother, William Corbin.
Mr. Corbin was retired as a rigger with the Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Mich. with 30 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 5th Engineers "C" Battalion from 1941-45.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Vivian A. (Gardiner) Corbin, whom he met during World War II in Oakridge, England, three daughters; Linda L. Springer, Burlington, Wanda V. Corbin, Inkster, Mich., and Marian Corbin-Rosa and husband Manuel, Montclair, N.J., two sons; Jim W. Corbin and wife Cynthia, Okemos, Mich. and Roy A. Corbin, Inkster, Mich., one sister; Helen Deverich, Romulus, Mich., three grandchildren; James Springer, Austin, Texas, Austin Corbin, Okemos, Mich. and Laura Corbin, Okemos, Mich.
