RUTH E. SMITH
CUMBERLAND -- Ruth E. Smith, 69, of Cumberland, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at Memorial Hospital.
Born on March 20, 1932, in Keyser, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Russell and Regina (Miller) Johnston. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Smith; and two sisters, Helen Chucci and Leona Dawson.
Mrs. Smith was a homemaker, who enjoyed baby-sitting her grandsons. She also enjoyed watching her grandsons sporting events.
Surviving are one son, Paul E. Smith and wife Darlene, LaVale; three grandsons, Eric R. Smith, Ryan E. Smith and Aaron N. Smith; two brothers, Charles "Sonny" Johnston and wife Margaret, North Carolina, Raymond Johnston, Keyser; two sisters, Mary Hanna and husband Junior, Westernport, and Margaret Fink, Cresaptown. She is also survived by several special nieces and nephews and their families, who allowed their Aunt Ruth to be an important part of their families.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Diane Smith officiating.
Interment will be in Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
ROBERT E. GETZ
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Robert E. Getz, 88, of Scottsdale, died April 22, 2001. He was born June 4, 1912, in Dry Fork, W.Va.
Survivors include his wife, Dianne; a daughter and her husband, Julie and Robert Zimmerman; a son and his wife, Robert and Lori Getz; sons of his wife, James, Anthony and Michael; daughters of his wife, Deborah and Gina; a sister, Dorothy Tabler; 14 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 28 at 10 a.m. in St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 16245 North 60th Street, Scottsdale.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the American Lung Association or the Cancer Society.
CHARLES R. WALKER
CUMBERLAND -- Charles Raymond Walker, 77, of Devlin Manor Nursing Home, formerly of Mexico Farms, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at the nursing home.
Born on Jan. 29, 1924, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Lenwood and Irene (Grove) Walker. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Freda (Davis) Walker; and two brothers, Roland and Stanley Walker.
Mr. Walker was retired from the B&O Railroad. He was a U.S. Army veteran of W.W.II.
Surviving are two brothers, Wallace Walker and wife Leona, Mexico Farms, Dale Walker and wife Boots, Cumberland; two sisters-in-law, Emmadale Twigg and husband Clewell and Boots Walker; special friends, Chad and Jennifer Hamilton, Cumberland; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Robert Hymes officiating.
Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap, Flintstone. Military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
SETH S. SHAFFER
HYNDMAN, Pa. -- Seth Steven Shaffer, 5, of River Drive, Hyndman, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at WMHS Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Born on Sept. 13, 1995, Seth was a son of Michael L. "Micky" and Dawn M. (Nolan) Shaffer, who survive.
Also surviving are a brother and best friend, Bryan M., at home, who thought the world of his little "bugman"; paternal grandparents, Linda K. (Minnick) and Claude "Jitter" Shaffer, Hyndman; maternal grandmother, Myra M. "Sissy" Nolan, Mount Savage, Md.; paternal grandmother, Louise Minnick, Hyndman; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Seth enjoyed playing soccer and hanging out with his big brother and neighborhood kids of all ages. He had a way of putting a smile on the faces of everyone he met-young and old. His family is thankful for the role everyone in the community took in sharing Seth's life.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, 2001, at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, 169 Clarence St., Hyndman.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday, April 29, 2001, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Steven L. Craft and the Rev. James Glass officiating.
Interment will be in Hyndman Cemetery.
Seth's uncles, Jerry Silver, Kenny Nolan and Rich Ingram will serve as pallbearers, along with Dave Wisnewski, a close friend of the Shaffer family.
RACHELL E. DEAL
OLDTOWN -- Rachell Elizabeth Deal, stillborn infant, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
She was the daughter of Tim and Allison (Smith) Deal, Teeter Hill Road, Oldtown. Maternal grandparents are Richard Smith and Carol Smith, Hagerstown; and paternal grandparents are Jerry Deal Sr. and Darlene Deal, Glen Burnie.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday at 9 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Mike Henning officiating.
Interment will be in the Frostburg Memorial Park.
The family requests that memorials in Rachell's memory be made to the March of Dimes of Allegany County, 111 S. George St., Cumberland, MD 21502.
NOEL S. COOK
COLUMBIA, MD. -- Noel S. Cook, an attorney and longtime member of the state legislature died at his home in Columbia, MD. on Monday.
Mr. Cook formerly of Frostburg, MD., graduated from Beall High School in 1922 and from Frostburg State University in 1924. He was a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity at the University of Maryland Law School where he graduated with honors in 1930.
In 1935, he married
the former Anna Ruddle who survives him.
He entered the Maryland House of Delegates in 1947 and served in that role until 1968 when he was selected by former Governor Spiro Agnew to serve as Senator. He left the legislature in 1970 having served under five Governers.
He was a member of the Allegheny and Maryland State Bar Associations and served for a time as the Frostburg City Attorney.
Active in many organizations, he was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the Elks. Eagles, Tall Cedars of Lebanon and the Ali Gahn Shriners of Cumberland.
Services will be held on Thursday April 26 at the Witzke Funeral Homes, Inc. of Columbia, MD., with entombment in Lakemont Cemetery, Davidsonville.
