CHARLES R. WALKER
CUMBERLAND -- Charles R. Walker, 77, of Devlin Manor Nursing Home, formerly of Mexico Farms, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001 at the nursing home.
Born on Jan. 29, 1924, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Lenwood and Irene (Grove) Walker. He was preceded in death by his wife Freda (Davis) Walker and two brothers Roland and Stanley Walker.
Mr. Walker was retired from the B & O Railroad. He was an U.S. Army veteran of W.W.II.
Surviving are two brothers, Wallace Walker and wife Leona, Mexico Farms, Dale Walker and wife Boots, Cumberland; two sisters-in-law. Emmadale Twigg and husband Clewell and Boots Walker; special friends, Chad and Jennifer Hamilton, Cumberland and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Robert Hymes officiating.
Interment will be in the Maryland State Veteran's cemetery at Rocky Gap, Flintstone.
Military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
ROBERT E. GETZ
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Robert E. Getz, 88, of Scottsdale, died April 22, 2001. He was born June 4, 1912, in Dry Fork, W.Va.
Survivors include his wife, Dianne; daughter and her husband, Julie and Robert Zimmerman; son and his wife, Robert and Lori Getz; sons of his wife, James, Anthony and Michael; daughters of his wife, Deborah and Gina; sister, Dorothy Tabler; 14 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 28, at 10 a.m. in St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 16245 North 60th Street, Scottsdale, AZ.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the American Lung Association or the Cancer Society.
RALPH N. WIMER
LaVale -- Ralph N. Wimer, 57, of LaVale died Tuesday at Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 25, 1943 in Parsons, W.Va., he was the son of the late Ralph P. and Irene C. (Currence) Wimer. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Don M. Wimer.
Mr. Wimer graduated from Allegany High School. He had been employed at Hill's Department Store, where his duties included custodial and stockroom work. Mr. Wimer was a member of the LaVale United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his aunt, Lucille Currence, with whom he resided with; a sister-in-law, Ruth Wimer, Coyahoga Falls, Ohio; four cousins, Dale Lacy and wife Shirley, LaVale, Robert Lacy and wife Nancy, LaVale, Juanita Wampler, Parsons, W.Va., and Jean Wilt; second cousins, Terry Lacy, Krista Grady and children, Chanel and Kaylynn, Becky and Eric Mann and son Jacob, Mike and Gwen Lacy and children Matt and Megan; Denise and Lisa Wilt; and six nieces, Susan, Deidre, Linda, Kathy, Tammy and Michelle.
The funeral service will be conducted by the Upchurch Funeral Home P.A., 202 Greene Street, Cumberland, on Thursday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Bernadette Ross officiating.
The family will then receive friends until 4 p.m. and again from 7 to 9 p.m.
The body will be taken to the Lohr-Barb-Vance Funeral Home, Elkins, W.Va., where friends will be received on Friday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. A graveside committal service will then be held at Maplewood Cemetery, with the Rev. Basil Hensley officiating.
Serving as pallbearers will be Dale Lacy, Robert Lacy, Jerry Grady, Bill Robinson, Kent Smith, and Jack Burkett.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bud Miller, Mike Miller, Mike Sakole, Bud Daniels and David Lindsay.
MARGARET L. CARTER
FROSTBURG -- Margaret Lavern Carter, 88, formerly of 100 Honeysuckle Lane, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at the Frostburg Village Nursing Care Center.
Born on Feb. 28, 1913, in Eckhart, she was the daughter of the late William and Katie (Barry) Nelson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harold E. Carter, in 1994; one brother, William Nelson; one sister, Beulah "Boody" Martz; and one nephew, Robert "Ozzie" Nelson.
Mrs. Carter was a homemaker and formerly a confectioner for many years at the McFarland Candy Shop on Main Street, Frostburg. She was a lifelong member of the Eckhart Methodist Church, member of the Mountain Chapter 15 Order of the Eastern Star and the Cedarettes.
Surviving are one daughter, Karen Delaney and husband Jerry, Frostburg.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m.
A funeral service will be held following the visitation at 7 p.m. with the Rev. George M. Harpold officiating.
A private interment will be held on Friday in the Eckhart Cemetery.
EARL R. HUFF
CUMBERLAND -- Earl R. Huff, Sr., 77, of Booth Towers, formerly of Bedford St., Cumberland, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001 at Memorial Hospital.
Born on March 6, 1924 in Cumberland, he was the son of the late George W. and Mary Cecelia (Hammersmith) Huff. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Virginia Huff, who died in 1977.
Mr. Huff was retired from the Kelly Springfield Tire Company after 40 years of service. A Roman Catholic by faith, Mr. Huff was a member of the American Legion Fort Cumberland Post 13 and the VFW Henry Hart Post 1411. A medic during W.W.II, Mr. Huff served under Gen. Douglas Mac Arthur in the South Pacific.
Mr. Huff is survived by a son, Earl "Rick" Huff Jr., wife Martha and granddaughter Beverly Ann Huff all of Clementon, NJ. Five sisters; Pauline Bridges and husband Marvin of Cumberland, Marie Rossi of Vineland, NJ., Emily White of Cumberland, Clara Henrietta Pfeiffer and husband Fred of Cresaptown, and Mary Elsa Welsh and husband Ralph of Cumberland; one brother, Edward Huff and wife Joyce of Cumberland.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 1 p.m. Burial will be conducted at the Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery.
Military Honors will be accorded at the gravesite by the members of the Combined Veterans Organizations.
IRWIN C. PHILLIPS
RAWLINGS -- Irwin Carl "Art" Phillips, 86, of Rawlings, died Monday, April 23, 2001, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law.
Born on Jan. 23, 1915, in Fog, W.Va., he was the son of the late Alba M. and Ersa M. (Hardman) Phillips. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Winona Thelma Phillips on Sept. 21, 1997; one brother, Hayden L. Phillips; and one sister, Aften V. Phillips.
Mr. Phillips was retired after 40 years of service from the Celanese Corporation. He was an avid coin collector and a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Cresaptown.
Surviving are one daughter, Judy Currence and husband Ken, Rawlings; one sister, Winifred Kolkhorst, Richmond, Va.; two brothers, Merrill Phillips and wife Margaret, Frostburg, and Richard Phillips and wife Rose, Rawlings; three granddaughters, Lauren Currence, Rawlings, Janet Wagoner and husband Marvin, Hanscom, Air Force Base, Mass., Kimberly Knott and husband Steve, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala.; and five great-grandchildren, Brandon Magnuson, Brittany Currence, Jonathan Knott, Samantha Knott and Zachary Wagoner.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Cresaptown, Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. David Kraft officiating.
Interment will be in Biertown Cemetery, Rawlings.
