VIRGINIA L. COFFMAN
CUMBERLAND -- Virginia L. Coffman, 84, of Cumberland, died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at the Cumberland Nursing Center.
Born on July 19, 1916, in Fairmont, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Lester C. and Gertrude A. Sherrard. She was also preceded in death by her husband, David C. Coffman Sr. on April 23, 1996.
Mrs. Coffman was a homemaker and a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
Surviving are one son, David C. Coffman Jr. and wife Evelyn, Cumberland; one daughter, Pamela Ann Yeager, LaVale; six grandchildren, Sheryl Lynn Burns, Cumberland, Frederick Lee Yeager, Georgia, William Wayde Yeager, Cumberland, Deborah Louise Stump, Ridgeley, W.Va., Amanda Kay Coffman, Cumberland, and Natalie Sue Coffman, Cumberland; 10 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
At Mrs. Coffman's request, her body will be cremated.
There will be graveside and inurnment services conducted at the Maryland State Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap on Tuesday at 12 noon with the Father Jerome Dunn, O.F.M., Cap., officiating.
The Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, is in charge of the arrangements.
RICHARD H. EDWARDS
RIDGELEY, W.Va. -- Richard H. Edwards, 94, of Ridgeley, died Friday, April 20, 2001, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Born on Jan. 27, 1907, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Stephen R. and Susan (Crabtree) Edwards. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Rose Catherine Edwards on Sept. 25, 1991; and a son, Richard E. Edwards.
Mr. Edwards was a retired B&O Railroad Engineer and was Protestant by faith. He was a World War II veteran who served in the Philippines with the U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers. He was a member of the Cumberland VFW Post #1411, Cumberland Goodfellowship Club and the UTU Local 06311.
Surviving are one daughter, Mary Lou Raley, Ridgeley; one sister, Nellie Rowzee; eight grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Oscar Ohler Sr. officiating.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
Military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
CLARE C. SHAFER
KEYSER, W.Va. -- Clare Cather Shafer, 84, of 5 S. Church St., Keyser, formerly of Valley View Avenue, died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, Md.
Born on April 24, 1916, at Keyser, she was a daughter of the late John R. and Anna (Byrne) Purdy. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Arthur E. Shafer on Feb. 19, 1992; and three brothers, John, Miles and Paul Purdy.
Mrs. Shafer was a retired supervising clerk with the former Cumberland and Allegany Gas Company, later know as Columbia Gas. She was a 1934 graduate of Keyser High School and was a member of the Church of the Assumption, Keyser. She was also a former member of both the Keyser Soroptomist Club and the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.
Surviving are one son, R. Scott Cather and wife Linda, Keyser; one sister, Mary C. Umstot, Keyser; and two grandchildren, Jennifer and Brian Cather.
Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, on Tuesday at 10 a.m. with Father Ivan M. Lebar, T.O.R., officiating.
Interment will be in the Queen's Point Cemetery, Keyser.

RAYMOND "DOC" MILLER
BARTON -- Raymond "Doc" Miller, 65, of 19015 Latrobe St., Barton, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at his residence.
Born in Barton on Aug. 26, 1935, he was the son of the late Edward and M. Della (O'Neil) Miller. A twin brother, Norman Miller; one sister, Mary Catherine Miller; and a grandson, Nicholas David Bradley also preceded him in death.
Mr. Miller was retired from Westvaco Corp., having been a fork truck driver. He was a member of the Barton United Methodist Church, member and past president of Barton Hose Co. 1, member of the Georges Creek Valley Lodge 161 AF and AM, a past Worshipful Master of the former Allegany Lodge 157, former board of directors member of Wepco Federal Credit Union, and a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies of Cumberland.
Surviving are his wife Doris (Ginevan) Miller; one son, Raymond Miller of Chesapeake, Va.; two daughters, Penny Weber and husband Bob of Cumberland and Donna Bradley and husband David of Barton; four brothers, Paul Miller and wife Doris of Barton, David Miller and wife Wilma of Barton, Calvin Miller and wife Madeline of Frostburg, and Jim Miller and wife Pat of Cumberland; one sister, Shirley Bosley and husband Bob of Bloomington; and five grandchildren, Zachary Miller, Misty Miller, Kayla Bradley, Seth Bradley and Cody Bradley.
The family will receive friends at the Boal Memorial Chapel, Barton, on Saturday, April 21, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral Services will be conducted at the Chapel on Sunday, April 22, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. John Park officiating.
Interment will be in the Laurel Hill Cemetery, Moscow Mills.
Barton Hose Co. will hold a memorial service at the Chapel on Saturday at 7:15 p.m., and Georges Creek Valley Lodge 161 will hold a memorial service on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
GLORIA P. WITT
AVON-BEND, W.Va. -- Gloria Pearl (Lancaster) Witt, 72, of Avon-Bend, formerly of Cumberland, died Friday, April 20, 2001, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital.
Born Dec. 12, 1928, in Cumberland, she was educated in Maryland Schools and graduated from Beall High School in 1946. She worked several years as a telephone operator for C&P Telephone Co. in Frederick, Md., and three years for Bechtel Corp. in Gaithersburg, Md.
She was a member of the Oakland United Methodist Church, the Emmaus Community, and Women's Aglow.
She was married
in 1946 to Kraymer Witt, who survives at home in Avon-Bend. She was preceded in death by both her parents, Frederick Lancaster in 1967 and Geraldine Weimer in 1980; and by her stepfather, Charles Weimer and stepmother, Emma Lancaster.
She is survived by four children, Gloria Jo Lum of Boonsboro, Md., Peggy Linger, residing at home, Marshall Witt of Quakertown, Pa., and Fred Witt of Martinsburg, W.Va.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She is survived by the following brothers and sisters, James Smith of Arlington, Wash., Charles Weimer of Apple Valley, Minn., Claude Weimer of Baltimore, Shirley Andrews of Hagerstown, Md., Bernice Huff of Frederick, Md., Ginney Griffin of Reisterstown, Md., Millie Basta of Glen Burnie, Md., and Lydia Birmingham of York, Pa.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Oakland United Methodist Building Fund, 26 Oakland Terrace, Charles Town, WV 25414.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, April 22, 2001, at 4 p.m. at the Oakland United Methodist Church, Charles Town, with the Rev. Joanne Alexander and the Rev. Kent Tice officiating.
The family will receive friends Saturday, April 21, 2001, from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Oakland United Methodist Church, Charles Town.

LILLIAN A. THORNTON
CUMBERLAND -- Lillian A. Thornton, 82, of 14512 Hazen Road., Cumberland, died Friday, April 20, 2001, at Allegany County Nursing Home.
Born Aug. 22, 1918, in Fayette Co., Pa., she was the daughter of the late Henry Beck Livingston and Mary Jane (Kellar) Livingston. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Russell Thornton Sr., in 1984 and a son, John R. Thornton Jr., in 1975.
Mrs. Thornton was a retired dietitian from the Northern Virginia Doctor's Hospital.
She is survived by four sons, Alexander Hamilton Thornton, Cumberland, Henry Beck Thornton and wife Victoria, Cumberland, Paul Lee Thornton and wife Linda, Gaithersburg, Randolph "Randy" Thornton, Cumberland; three sisters Evelyn Righetti, Cleveland, Ohio, Wilma Corfont, Parma, Ohio, Beatrice Foltin, Garfield Heights, Ohio; one daughter-in-law, Margaret Thornton-Martin; 13 grandchildren, H. Brent Thornton, Alexander Thornton III, Michael Thornton, Paul Thornton Jr., John Thornton III, Billy Thornton, Cody Thornton, Hidie Christiansen, Tara Thornton, Tracy Thornton, Kim Thornton, Sherry Taylor and Linda Anderson; and eight great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, PA., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland on Saturday from 2 to 4 and from 7 to 8 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 8 p.m. with the Rev. Tom Landaker officiating.
Committal services will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday at LaFayette Memorial Cemetery, Brier Hill, Pa. with the Rev. Al Mace officiating.
The family requests that memorials be made to the American Diabetes Association, or Elliot Memorial United Methodist Church to Women's Bible Study.
