CHARLES R. MARTIN
CUMBERLAND -- Charles R. "Sam" Martin, 77, of Cumberland, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Feb. 11, 1924, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late William Thomas and Lucy Cecilia (Dressman) Martin. He was also preceded in death by five brothers, Walter Vincent Martin, Leonard W. Martin, Richard A. Martin, James E. Martin and John H. Martin; and three sisters, Mary E. Schriver, Dorothy C. Martin and Rita E. Martin.
Mr. Martin was a sanitary engineer for the Allegany County Board of Education. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Cumberland Council #586, American Legion Fort Cumberland Post #13, V.F.W. Henry Hart Post, and Fraternal Order of Eagles Cumberland Aerie #245.
Surviving are two brothers, Gerard T. Martin, and Paul S. Martin and wife Mary; two sisters-in-law, Mildred Martin and Dolores Martin, all of Cumberland; a very special and caring niece, Victoria E. Martin; his roommate, Fred Neely; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake Service will be conducted on Wednesday at 8:45 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Thursday at 9 a.m. with Monsignor Thomas R. Bevan as celebrant.
Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap, Flintstone. Military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
Pallbearers will be Buck Gephart, Bob Nines, Bernie Barbe, Patrick Connelly, Jim Collins and John Dougherty. Honorary pallbearers will be Mickey Clark and Richard McGann.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Patrick's Catholic Church Elevator Fund.
ROY J. MCCABE
KEYSER, W.Va. -- Friends will be received for Roy James McCabe at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m.
Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap, Flintstone, Md.
Pallbearers will be Bob Saville, Kevin Peterson, Ron Beals, Verle Blankenship, Tom Delawder and Keith Funkhouser.
ROBERT W. ROSSANO
CUMBERLAND -- Robert William Rossano, 49, of Cumberland, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at Memorial Hospital. Mr. Rossano moved to Cumberland a year ago, after being disabled by illness, because he loved the mountains.
He was born in Austria, Feb. 9, 1952, where his father was stationed with the U.S. Army. He lived in Germany and Italy, as well as many other foreign countries, before returning to North Carolina, where he lived until moving to Arlington, Va.
Mr. Rossano had been a building engineer for the Virginia Management Corporation. He had belonged to the National Association of Power Engineers.
He is survived by his beloved wife and soulmate, Patricia Ball Rossano. They were married
Sept. 15, 1984, in Centreville, Va.
Also surviving are his mother, Rose Rossano and sister, Lucy Carr, as well as nieces, Wendi and Stacey Carr, and nephew, Dave Carr.
Mr. Rossano was especially loved and close to his wife's family. Surviving are two sisters-in-law, Kathleen M. Ball, Centreville, Va., and Linda B. Rodeffer, Fairfax, Va.; two nieces, Deborah Szymanski and husband Eric, Cumberland, and Suzanne Rodeffer, Abingdon, Va.; two nephews, Richard Jones, Centreville, and Mark Rodeffer III, Fairfax, Va. One of his greatest joys in moving to Cumberland was being able to see his great-nephews, Edward and Eric, and great-niece, Elizabeth Szymanski, who also survive.
There will be a memorial service at Arlington Funeral Home, 3901 Fairfax Drive, Arlington, VA, on Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at 6 p.m.
Interment will be private.

MARY J. WEDDLE
FLINTSTONE -- Friends will be recieved for Mary Jane Weddle, 93, formerly of National Pike, Flintstone, then a resident of the Devlin Manor Nursing Home, at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Ervin Mason officiating.
Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.

FROSTBURG -- Mary Martha Cosgrove, 73, of Frostburg, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, at the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home, P.A., 60 W. Main St., Frostburg, Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael's Catholic Church on Thursday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Father Paul A. Byrnes as celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Michael's Cemetery.
GEORGIA A. VALENTINE
CUMBERLAND -- Georgia Ann Valentine, 70, of 12511 Valen Lane, NE, Cumberland, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born on June 30, 1931, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Young H. Carithers and Nattie (Isner) Carithers. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Young Hoyt Carithers Jr.
Mrs. Valentine was a devoted mother and homemaker and a member of the Women of the Moose Chapter #914.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth L. Valentine, Cumberland; three daughters, Pamela S. Rhodes and husband Sonny, Cumberland, Cindy L. Valentine, Cumberland, Jody A. Parrish and husband Billy, Cumberland; a brother, Gene Carithers; two sisters, Clara P. Hite and Betty J. Means; three grandchildren, Troy L. Siebert, Tina M. Ferrari and husband Marlon, Sierra N. Green and Brittney Parrish; and two great-grandchildren, Tatiana and Emilio Ferrari, all of Cumberland.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Cook officiating.
Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap.
JOSEPH E. STRICKLAND
LAVALE -- Joseph E. Strickland, 66, of 12310 Henry Drive SW, LaVale, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at his home.
Born on Feb. 10, 1935, in Loris, S.C., he was the son of the late Uriel B. and Amanda Eva (Williamson) Strickland. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Bruce Strickland.
Mr. Strickland graduated from The Citadel, Charleston, S.C., in 1957. He then served in the U.S. Army. He was a life member of the Cumberland Elks BPOE #63, and a member of the National Rifle Association. Mr. Strickland was a registered Professional Civil Engineer in Maryland and previously held certification in North Carolina. He was retired from the Allegany County Sanitary Commission, where he was Secretary Treasurer during the commission's building years for water and sewage service for the majority of county residents. Mr. Strickland was a Baptist by faith and a former member of Grace Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school and served as a deacon and a trustee.
Mr. Strickland was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was always involved in the many activities his children and grandchildren participated in. Joe always encouraged his children to strive to achieve anything that they wanted. He was a strong role model for his children and to others, and he touched the lives of many with his kindness and tender heart. He would do whatever he could to make things possible for his children and family.
Joe was often described as a soft-spoken true Southern gentleman. He was particularly interested in U.S. History, especially the Civil War era. He traveled to many battlefields and read much about the men who participated. He especially enjoyed the Civil War Weekend held annually at Virginia Tech. He collected books, prints and other war memorabilia.
Mr. Strickland enjoyed gardening and woodworking. He often designed and built furniture for his family. Because he was able to reuse and recycle items, the pieces always carried special memories. He designed and built a cradle used by his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Martha (Miller) Strickland; one son, Bennett Strickland and wife Aileen, Baltimore; and three daughters, Jo-Ellen Shannon and husband David, Baltimore, Jane Troutman and husband Richard, Herndon, Pa., and Amanda Kehoe and husband Tim, Richmond, Va.; three sisters, Pat Averett, Charleston, S.C., Azalea Franke and husband Chuck, Norman, Okla., and Sarah Tripp and husband Crafton, Cumming, Ga.; and one brother, Sam Strickland and wife Gerlene, Charlotte, N.C.; three grandchildren, Katie and Karl Troutman, Herndon, and Kyle Shannon, Baltimore; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Bernadette Ross officiating.
Interment will be in the Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Cash Valley Road, LaVale.
