OSCAR B. MORLEN
RIDGELEY, W.Va. -- Oscar Blake Mole Morlen, 72, of Ridgeley, died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, at the VA Medical Center, Martinsburg.
Born on April 20, 1929, in Job, he was the son of the late James Allen Mole and Maudie Clementine (Smith) Morlen. He was also preceded in death by one son, Philip Dewayne Morlen; two sisters, Elva Morlen and Sylvia Morlen; three brothers, Thomas Morlen, Hansel Morlen and Gilbert Morlen; six half-brothers, Joshua Smith, Stellman Carr, Stanley Carr, Bernie Mole, James Mole and Onnie Mole; and seven half-sisters, Mae White, Marie Donaldson, Elsie Carr, Grace Mole, Hattie Mole, Florence Mole and Rose Mole.
Mr. Morlen was a former employee of the Coca Cola Bottling Works, Cumberland. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, a member of the Central Assembly of God Church and the Ridgeley Post #6452, V.F.W.
Surviving are the mother of his children, Eleanore L. Smith; one son, Melvin B. Morlen and Judy Howell, Crothersville, Ind.; one daughter, Cindy L. Morlen and Armando Mustachio, Berkeley Springs; one sister, Frances Owens, Baltimore, Md.; one brother, Oras Morlen and wife Marvel, Wiley Ford; three grandchildren, Angelique Wyatt and husband Walter, Brandan Morlen and Misty Morlen; eight great-grandchildren, Walter, Angelique, Melissa, Jessica, Cheyenne Morlen Wyatt (Pop Pop's namesake), Kristen, Shelby and Kendra Morlen; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Robert Hymes officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland. Military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
Pallbearers will be Robert Smith Jr., Bret Aldridge, Dale Smith, Butch Smith, DeWayne Albert and James Myers. Honorary pallbearers will be Walter Wyatt, Richard McDonald Jr., Jason Smith, Jay Myers, Jimmy Morlen and Danny Morlen I.
BETTY L. SANDSBURY
CUMBERLAND -- Betty L. Sandsbury, 74, of Cumberland, died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, at Memorial Hospital.
Born on Oct. 26, 1926, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Earl E. "Duke" and Helen (Glantzer) Sandsbury.
Betty retired in 1984 from Lucent Technologies, where she had worked mainly in the Washington, D.C. area. She was a 1944 graduate of Fort Hill High School, a life member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, and a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.
Surviving are one brother, Earl W. Sandsbury, Bedford, Pa.; one sister, Shirley E. Collins and husband Merle, Cumberland; one niece, Kimberly Egelhoff, Cumberland; an aunt, Myrtle Carey and husband Fred, New Castle, Del.; and numerous cousins.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Mark C. Dill officiating.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

RUTH D. WEISE
SYKESVILLE -- Ruth D. Weise, 83, of 6160 Timdan Court, Sykesville, formerly of Cumberland, died on Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, in Carroll County Hospital.
She was the daughter of the late William P. and Pallie (Harmon) Lough. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Walter W. Weise Sr. and numerous siblings.
Mrs. Weise attended the Methodist Church. She had been employed at the Cumberland Nursing Home for 16 years.
Surviving are one son, Walter W. Weise Jr. and his wife Grace K. of Sykesville; three grandchildren, Walter W. Weise III, of Westminster, Curtis N. Weise of Sykesville, and Tracey L. Athey of Frederick; and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Gladys Cespedes of Ohio, and Blanche Witt and Florida; and one brother, Walter (Bud) Lough of North Carolina.
Friends will be received at the Hafer Funeral Home, Chapel of the Hills, 1302 National Hwy., LaVale, MD 21502, (301) 729-5000, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Monday at 1 p.m.
Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Cumberland.

MATTHEW F. GUILD
WINTER GARDEN, Fla. -- Matthew Frederick Guild, 39, died on Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, in Winter Garden.
Matthew was born Nov. 17, 1961, in Utica, N.Y. He was the younger son of Dr. and Mrs. Nelson P. Guild of Frostburg. He graduated from Beall High School in 1980, attended West Virginia Wesleyan College for two years, graduated with a B.S. degree in Psychology from Frostburg State College in 1984, and completed an M.S. in Gerontology at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond.
Ever the friend and helpmate of the elderly, Matthew was employed for most of his career at Genesis Counseling in Laconia, N.H., then at Riverbend Mental Health Center in Franklin, N.H.
Matthew is survived by his wife, the former Mary Lou Terry of Frostburg, his nine-year-old son, Nelson; his parents; and his brother, Douglas and family of Chapel Hill, N.C.
A Memorial Service is scheduled on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Frostburg United Methodist Church. The body has been cremated in accordance with Matthew's wishes. Matthew is now at peace in the arms of his God.

BEDFORD, Pa. -- Alton Francis Growden, 72, of Centreville, died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, at Bon Secours-Holy Family Hospital, Altoona.
Born March 4, 1929, in Bedford, he was the son of the late Francis Growden and Vera Mae (Boor) Growden. He was also preceded in death by a brother, John Growden.
Mr. Growden was a retired truck driver for Valley Lumber Company. He attended Centreville United Methodist Church, and a Navy veteran of the Korean War.
He is survived by a son, Michael Alton Growden and wife Kristine, Cumberland; two daughters, Elizabeth Swindell and husband Kent, Centreville, and Angela Francine Growden, Cumberland; three brothers, Eddie E. Growden and wife Bunnie, Cumberland Valley, Pa., Paul C. Growden and wife Nora, Cumberland, Roger "Peanut" Growden and wife Velma, Austin, Texas; a sister, Shirley L. Griffith, Cumberland Valley; and eight grandsons, Jared Growden, Alex Rossell, Michael Growden, Anthony Rossell, Jonathan Swindell, Dylan Growden, Seth Swindell and Kyle Swindell.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
