FRANCIS M. GLASS
SYKESVILLE -- Francis Melvin Glass, 82, of Sykesville, died on Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at Continuum Care, Sykesville.
Born Feb. 6, 1919, in Carroll County, he was the son of the late David and Ruth Esworthy Glass. He was the husband of Imogene Ruby Glass who died on May 29, 2001.
He had worked as a carpenter for most of his life.
He is survived by sons, Patrick Glass of Mt. Airy, Karl Glass of Mont., and Clarence Glass of Frostburg; daughters, Cecelia Jane Smith of Norfolk, Va., Diana Lynn McKenzie of Frostburg; brother, Eldridge Glass of Sykesville and sister, Margaret LaPrade of Sykesville. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Haight Funeral Home and Chapel (6416 Sykesville Road) Sykesville.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Officiating will be the Rev. Mark Massey.
Interment will in Lake View Memorial Park, Sykesville.
MARGARET S. FOLEY
LONACONING -- Margaret Smith Foley, 97, formerly of Douglas Avenue, Lonaconing, died Saturday Aug. 18, 2001, at the Egle Nursing Home, Lonaconing, where she had been a patient since Nov. 23, 1994.
Born June 18, 1904, in Lonaconing, she was the daughter of the late Hugh McMillan and Marie Susan (Clark) McMillan. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Christopher Hendra, married
Feb. 27, 1930, died 1957, and John Foley, married
Dec. 23, 1958, died May 11, 1972; one son, 11 days old, John H. Hendra, died 1930; two sisters, Elsie Ravenscroft and Edna Lange; three brothers, Hugh McMillan, Melvin McMillan and Oscar McMillan.
Mrs. Foley was a nurse's aid at the Old Sacred Heart Hospital, Decatur Street, Cumberland, the Lonaconing Silk Mill and The Celanese Fibers Corporation, Cumberland. She was a 50 year plus member of the First United Methodist Church, Lonaconing and the Lonaconing Republican Club.
Surviving is a special niece, Kim Vanderhout and husband Bruce, Frostburg; and a very special friend, Vivian Moore, Lonaconing; two sisters, Agnes Meyers, St. Vincent de Paul Nursing Home, Frostburg, (formerly of Midland) and Thelma Wiland and husband Charlie, Catonsville; one brother, Robert McMillan and wife Vergie, Pontiac, Mich.; numerous nieces and nephews; two step-sons, Melvin Foley, McHenry and John Patrick Foley, Chambersburg, Pa.; two step-granddaughters, Melanie Foley Rodney, McHenry, Janice Foley, New Jersey; step-grandson, Eddie Shinholt, Cumberland; and several step-great-grandchildren.
The body was cremated.
Friends will be received Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, one hour prior to the memorial service at 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, Church Hill, Lonaconing, with the Rev. Richard Mortimore and the Rev. Neva Leatherwood officiating.
Inurnment will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Lonaconing.
Friends are invited to the home of Kim Vanderhout, 17211 Old Country Road SW, Frostburg, following the service.

EVERETT I. SPIKER
LONACONING -- Everett I. Spiker, 89, formerly of Midland and Lonaconing, went to Heaven to be with his Lord, and joined his wife, Mary Rennie Spiker, on Aug. 18, 2001.
At the time, he was living with his daughter and son-in-law, Helen and William Wolf in Baden, Pa. He will be truly missed by many family members, friends, and business associates, all who were part of his life.
Born on Feb. 22, 1912, he was the son of the late Henry and Winifred Poland Spiker.
He attended Hill Street and Beall High Schools, worked various jobs in the coal mines, on the railroads, and the Celanese to care for his family. In 1947, he opened his auto mechanic shop in Midland, where his love of automobiles led to his successful Chrysler dealership at Lonaconing Motors in 1955. Following the next 40 years, he worked very hard winning many 5 star sales achievment awards from the Chrysler Corporation. (In 1959, a fire destroyed his complete business, but with God's help, he rebuilt to be even more successful.) He was a member of the Gospel Hall in Grahamtown for over 60 years, and was a 50 year Mason of Georges Creek Valley Lodge 161 A.F. and A.M.
Mr. Spiker leaves to mourn his passing, his three daughters and two sons-in-law whom he made his home with for the last six years, Dolores Kline, Washington, Mich., Betty Hoath and husband Ivan, Chico, Calif., Helen Wolf and husband William, Baden, Pa.; another daughter, Mary Rump, Fairborn, Ohio; three sons and three daughters-in-law, Everett A. (Ebb) and wife JoAnn, Midland, James R. and wife Jeannie, Elizabethtown, Pa., and Pastor Daniel T. and wife Jackie, Brunswick; 21 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Wilma Spiker, Frostburg; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Harry, Henry, and Raymond; one sister, Nancy Ritchey; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Friends will be received at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, P.A., 8 East Main St., Lonaconing, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 to 11 a.m.
Services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with Mr. John Mark Slabaugh and Mr. Ivan Hoath officiating.
Members of the Georges Creek Valley Lodge 161 A.F. and A.M. will hold a memorial service Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Interment will be at the Mt. View Cemetery, Moscow Mills.
In lieu of flowers, and at Mr. Spiker's request, memorial contributions be made, if desired to Forbes Hopsice, 320 E. North Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15212-9199, because of the excellent care and love shown him during his lasts months.
Grandson's will be pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Alkire, James Dunn, Ray Shingler, Earl Stafford, Ralph Race, and Reginald Kyle Jr.
LEO J. LAPORTA
ECKHART -- Leo Joseph LaPorta, 88, of Eckhart, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, at Frostburg Village Nursing Home.
Born June 17, 1913, in Frostburg, he was the son of the late Anthony and Sadie (Bollino) LaPorta. He was also preceded in death by his wife Mildred (Stewart) LaPorta. Four brothers, Ross LaPorta, Josie LaPorta, Sam LaPorta, Anthony LaPorta; three sisters, Mary LaPorta, Della Sapienza and Sadie Yeager.
Mr. LaPorta retired from the Celanese after 43 years. He was a member of St. Michael's Church. He was a loving grandfather and an avid gardener.
Surviving are his son, Alan (Mick) LaPorta and wife Jeanne, Frostburg; two grandchildren, Julie O'Connor and husband John, Frostburg, and Mick LaPorta and wife Theresa, Eckhart; and one sister, Helen Caldwell, Frostburg.
Friends will be received at Sowers Funeral Home, P.A., 60 W. Main St., Frostburg on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Father William E. Moody officiating.
Interment will be in Eckhart Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Frostburg Village Nursing Home.
DANIEL H. LAGRATTA
CUMBERLAND -- Family and Friends are mourning the sudden death of Daniel Herman LaGratta, 41, who passed away on Aug. 18, 2001.
Born Jan. 5, 1960, in Cumberland, he was the son of Geneva "Ginger" (Ketterman) LaGratta and the late Joseph LaGratta, his "best friend" who taught him what it was like to be Italian and who passed away on March 3, 1992.
Mr. LaGratta, an employee of the United States Post Office since 1983, was a window clerk at the main office on Park Street. He was a graduate of the Fort Hill High School Class of 1978, an active member of the Reunion Committee and he served in the United States Air Force. He was a member of the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans, the "F" Club and the Outdoor Club. He was President of the local 513 American Postal Workers Union. Mr. LaGratta was a frequent volunteer at the South Penn Elementary School and was the newly elected Vice President of the South Penn P.T.A.
Dan took great joy in coaching every sport his son Joel participated in. He was the head coach of both the South Cumberland Reds Pee Wee football team and the Dapper Dan Rockies baseball team. He also coached the St. John's Lutheran Church basketball team and helped coach youth basketball and floor hockey teams at the Cumberland YMCA. Last Monday, he helped coach his daughter, Jessie's first soccer practice. He encouraged and supported Jessie's participation in dance and acrobat class and was very proud of his daughter this past spring at her first dance revue. Although he had to display it from a distance. Mr. LaGratta was also very proud of his son Danny, currently serving in the United States Army, and the fine young man he has become.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Kay (Hensel) LaGratta, and by his three children, who gave his life purpose and were truly his pride and joy, Daniel Joseph LaGratta, Joel Anthony LaGratta and Jessie Anne LaGratta. Mr. LaGratta strove to follow his father Joe's example and be the best and most loving father possible. He is also survived by two brothers, Frederick Timbrook and wife Patricia, Ridgeley, W.Va., Joseph LaGratta, Cumberland; mother-in-law, Mary (Collins) Hensel; sisters-in-law, Susan Hensel, Melissa Hensel, Diane Hensel; brother-in-law, Rick Hensel; special nephew, Frederick J. Timbrook and wife Kristen and family; special niece, Ebony Martin, for whom he was a father figure; and close friends, Lawrence Cosner and son Cory, Greg Mackert and family, and Kevin and Kelly Steckman and sons. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, H. Kennneth Hensel on Oct. 27, 2000.
Filled with love for sports and children, Mr. LaGratta was an excellent coach who encouraged all his kids to "DO the best you can do, have fun, and stay safe!" In acknowledgment of Dan's unending support and pride in all of "his sports kids" in the Youth Pee Wee football league, an award has been established in his name for the "Coach With The Biggest Heart".
At Dan's request there will be no viewing and his body will be cremated at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Crematorium, Cresaptown.
Friends will be received at St. John's Lutheran Church, 406 Arch St., Cumberland, from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001.
A Memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at the church at 3 p.m. on Saturday, with the Rev. Mark C. Dill officiating,
The family request that memorials take the form to contributions to college trust funds for Joe and Jessie LaGratta through the Al-Gar Federal Credit Union, 316 Paca St., Cumberland, or the South Cumberland Reds Pee Wee football team, c/o Tim Kunis, 206 E. Elder St., Cumberland.
Dan's life revolved around his children and there was no greater joy for him than to spend time with Danny, Joel, and Jessie.
