RICHARD T. BRANT
SHORT GAP, W.Va. -- Richard T. "Dick" Brant Sr., 74, of Short gap, died Sunday, July 22, 2001, while visiting Dayton, Ohio, due to the death of his brother.
Born Sept. 21, 1926, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Lloyd Brant Sr. and Ethel (Dietz) Brant Bell. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Crowder and Rosanell Hartman; one son, R. "Ted" Brant; and two brothers, Lloyd Brant Jr. and Harley Brant, who passed away four days prior to Dick's death.
Mr. Brant was a diesel mechanic by trade and a member of Teamsters and Chauffers Local 453. He retired from Stroehmann Brothers bakery in 1987. In his younger years, Mr. Brant enjoyed motorcycle riding and more recently "tinkering" in his workshop, gardening and yard work, especially mowing the grass on his John Deere tractor, on which all of his children and grandchildren learned to drive. He was an excellent mechanic and thrived on keeping everyone's vehicles in tip-top shape. He was an avid NASCAR fan, and more than anything, he loved his family, enjoyed family vacations and spending time with his grandchildren.
Dick was a long time member of Old Furnace Church of the Brethren, and a recently appointed deacon. He served in many capacities including ministerial board, trustee, usher, and Sunday School Class President. He initialed and saw to completion many projects at the church, one of which he was most proud of, a handicap ramp and entrance. He was also a member of the church choir and enjoyed playing his harmonica with his buddies. He enjoyed sharing his time in church services at the local nursing homes. He will be fondly remembered as the "candy man" to the children, having given lollipops and mints to kids of all ages for many years.
His greatest pleasure was in assisting others in need, and he will be greatly missed by his many friends and neighbors for whom he was always ready with a helping hand.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Lola N. (Hartman) Brant; one son, Robert E. Brant Sr. and wife Rhonda, Morgantown; two daughters, Cindy A. Hall and husband Joseph, Cara N. Malone and husband Tim; one daughter-in-law, Kathryn A. "Kitty" Brant, all of Short Gap; five grandchildren, Dr. Richard W. Brant and wife Jennifer, R. April Higginbottom and husband Phillip, Robert E. "J.R." Brant Jr., Alexandria J. Hall and Kylie N. Malone; five sisters, Clara Mae Bartram and husband Charles, Betty May and husband Herman, June "Bo" Baker and husband Dolph, Jeannette Hampton and husband Lewis, Barbara Sutton and husband George; one brother, Donnie Bell and wife Melede; two sisters-in-laws, Veda Brant and Bernice Brant; one uncle, Leroy Brant and wife Mary, Lonaconing; one aunt, Elsie Smith, Cumberland, numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.
Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Cresaptown, Tuesday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Old Furnace Church of the Brethren on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Paul Heisey and the Rev. Eric Hooks officiating. Friends will also be received at the church one hour prior to the services.
Interment will be in the Fort Ashby Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation or the Old Furnace Church Children's Department.
MARY JO DEVITT
CUMBERLAND -- Mary Jo Devitt, 54, of Cumberland Street, died Sunday, July 22, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born April 16, 1947 in Philadelphia, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Dr. Edward McNicholas and Josephine (Nalazek) McNicholas.
Mrs. Devitt was a nurse practitioner and a nursing instructor at Allegany Community College. She received her Bachelor's Degree from Chestnut Hill College, Chestnut Hill; her Master's Degree from DePaul University in Chicago, Ill.; a graduate of Ball State University School of Nursing and received her Master's in nursing from the University of Maryland. She was a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church and was active in the March of Dimes.
Surviving are her husband, Robert L. Devitt; one daughter, Nicole M. Devitt, Washington, D.C.; one son, Robert E. Devitt, at home; three sisters, Dr. Kathleen McNicholas, Wilmington, Del., Patricia A. McNicholas Thomas and husband Doug, Bernadette Travers and husband William, all of Blue Bell; one brother, Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Edward McNicholas and wife Gill, Newport News; an aunt, Albina Nalazek, Chicago, Ill.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Wednesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
A Christian Wake will be conducted Wednesday at 8:45 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Thursday at 10 a.m. with Father Senan Glass O.F.M., Cap. officiating.
At. Mrs. Devitt's request, her body will be cremated.
Inurnment will be in Philadelphia.
CLOYD O. OWENS
CUMBERLAND -- Cloyd O. Owens, 70, of LaVale, died Monday, July 23, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born May 11, 1931, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Cloyd V. and Dora (Smallwood) Owens. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Ann "Patsy" Owens, Aug. 3, 2000.
He was a 1949 graduate of Fort Hill High School, a 1950 graduate of Catherman's Business School. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean Conflict. He attended Naval Justice School in Providence, R.I., and was stationed in Norfolk, Va., Naval Shipyards. He was a clerk for the Western Maryland and Chessie System Railroads. He later became chief clerk for the CSX Transportation Cumberland Division, where he retired in April, 1990. He was a life member of Elks B.P.O.E. 63 and Knights of Columbus Council 5450. He was a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church. He loved to travel, was an avid fisherman, golfer, and bowler. He bowled for the Elks and K of C Bowling League. He participated in many bowling and golf tournaments. He was a loving father and was devoted to his children and grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by his family and all that knew him.
Surviving are one daughter, Karen Louise Miller, Mount Savage; two sons, Michael S. Owens and fiancee Tina L Adkins, Huntington, W.Va., Christopher L. Owens and wife Teresa, LaVale; six grandchildren, Jason M. Owens, Jennifer Rae Miller, Christopher G. Miller, Robyn Ann Miller, Jacob A. Owens, Seth C. Owens; two sisters, Katherine Bryant, Cumberland, Marion Linn and husband Warren, Cumberland; a brother-in-law, Joseph Webb and wife Colleen, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funnel Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
The B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge 63 will conduct a memorial service on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. A Rosary will be conducted Tuesday at 8:45 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with Father Roman Kozacheson, O.F.M., Cap. as celebrant.
Interment will be in Maryland State Veteran's cemetery at Rocky Gap, Flintstone.
Military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veteran's Honor Guard.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Heart Association.
GEORGE H. KNOTTS
CUMBERLAND -- George H. Knotts, 89, of Pennsylvania Ave., Cumberland, died Monday, July 23, 2001, in Memorial Hospital.
Born April 11, 1912, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Stephen and Lilly (Rice) Knotts. He was predeceased by his wife of 69 years M. Arline Knotts on June 2, 2001 and a son George Thomas Knotts.
Mr. Knotts was a member of the New Covenant United Methodist Church, he had 25 years of services with the Celanese Corporation and retired from Potomac Farms. He was a member of Fort Hill Gun and Rifle Club.. He was a Past Master and Treasurer of the Potomac Masonic Lodge 100 A.F. and A.M. Mr. Knotts served as a Grand Inspector for the Grand Masonic Lodge of Maryland for several years and also served as Deputy Grand Lector of the Grand Masonic Lodge for 16 years, as an honorary member of the Orh Masonic Lodge 131 A.F. and A.M., East Gate Masonic Lodge 216 A.F. and A.M., Fort Cumberland Masonic Lodge 211 A.F. and A.M., and the Kemp Masonic Lodge 154 A.F. and A.M. He was also a former member of the York Rite Bodies and a former member of the Ali Ghan Shrine.
Surviving are two grandchildren, George E. Knotts and wife Michele of Ellerslie and Regina A. Miller and husband J. Shawn of Frostburg; two great-grandchildren, George Lucas Knotts and Kristin Michele Knotts; and a daughter-in-law, Barbara Hebb and husband Charles of Corriganville.
Friends will be received in the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary. 1302 National Highway, LaVale on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Masonic Services will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m. by Potomac Lodge 100 A.F. and A.M.
Funeral services will be held in the funeral home chapel on Thursday, July 26, 2001, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Richard Jewell officiating.
Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.
MARION L. ROTH KIESOW
KEYSER, W.Va. -- Marion L. Roth Kiesow, 91, formerly of 500 Carskadon Lane, Keyser and Westwood, N.J., died Monday, July 23, 2001, at the Heartland of Keyser Nursing Home.
Born on Dec. 7, 1909 at Westwood, she was a daughter of the late William A. Scharr Sr. and Mamie (Hendel) Scharr. Twice married, she was preceded in death by both husbands, James A. Roth on April 5, 1957 and Fred H. Kiesow on March 20, 1999; a brother, Alwyn Scharr and a half brother, William A. Scharr Jr. also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Kiesow was retired as a sales clerk with the Sears Roebuck Company in New Jersey. She was affiliated with both St. Andrew's Roman Catholic Church in Westwood, and St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church in Tuckerton.
She is survived by one son, James A. Roth and wife Jean, West Milford; two daughters, Geraldyne R. Long and husband David E., Keyser, Marilyn M. Lauer and husband William, Woodland Park, Colo.; one half brother, Calvin Scharr, Eustis, Fla.; one half sister, Madeline Martin, Boca Raton; seven grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and four great great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m.
A Christian Wake Service will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Friends may also call at the Becker Funeral Home, Westwood, on Thursday from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m.
Graveside services will be conducted at St. Andrews Cemetery, RiverVale, on Thursday at 1 p.m.
Interment will follow.
The Smith Funeral Home, Keyser, is in charge of the arrangements.

FRIENDSVILLE -- A Memorial Service for Robert Alan Di Giacomo will be conducted at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
At Mr. Di Giacomo's request his body was cremated.
