OKEY A. UPOLE
Okey A. Upole, 56, Accokeek, died earlier today, Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at his home.
Born July 11, 1943, in Oakland, he was a son of the late Raymond G. and E. Virginia (Hart) Upole. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Gary Gilbert Upole.
He was a member of the White Hall Baptist Church, Accokeek.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia L. (Ahern) Upole; one daughter, Conne Serbue, Accokeek; one stepdaughter, Tammi Gibbins, Manassas, Va.; one stepson, William Ahern, Dale City, Va.; one sister, S. Jill Warnick, Oakland; three brothers, L. Edward Upole, Warsaw, and Bradley D. 'Doc' Upole and David H. Upole, both of Oakland; one grandson; and three step-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday. A service will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday, Sept. 11, at 12:30 p.m., with the Rev. Michael Mudge and the Rev. Charles Teets officiating. Interment will follow in Garrett County Memorial Gardens, Oakland.
NORMAN S. LEWIS SR.
Norman S. Lewis Sr., 62, Oakland, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born Feb. 18, 1937, in Oakland, he was the son of the late Samuel H. and Bessie (Dumire) Lewis. He was also preceded in death by one son, Samuel Lewis.
Survivors include two daughters, Norma Lewis and Elizabeth Lewis, both of Oakland; three sons, Norman S. Lewis Jr., Sheldon, Ill., Robert Lewis, Bettendolf, Iowa, and Sean Lewis, Oakland; two sisters, Mabel Sisler, Oakland, and Esther Hiser, Cumberland; and seven grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Rocky Drean Assembly of God Church from 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2, time of the service, with the Rev. Gail Hixon and the Rev. William Skipper officiating. Interment will follow in the Friend Cemetery, Oakland.
The Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, is in charge of arrangements.
DOUGLAS L. SCHENK
Douglas L. Schenk, 57, McHenry, died Monday, Aug. 30, 1999, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born April 26, 1942, in McHenry, he was a son of Leo Fredlock Schenk and Kathleen (Mosser) Schenk, both of Oakland.
He was a welder and boilermaker, having worked out of Charleston Local 667. He was a member of the Garrett Bassers Association and the Mountain Top Hunting Club.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Kathryn (Campbell) Schenk; and two brothers, Larry F. Schenk, Oakland, and Milton E. 'Sam' Schenk, New Hampshire.
Friends were received at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, where a service was conducted earlier today, Sept. 2, with the Rev. Samuel Wachter officiating. Interment was in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials take the form of contributions to the Southern Garrett Rescue Squad.
ALVIN G. MURPHY
Alvin Glen Murphy, 61, Swanton, died Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999, at the Nursing Home Care Unit of the Veterans Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born in Garrett County, he was a son of the late Glen and Grace (Handwork) Murphy. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 19 years, Peggy Jean (Iser) Murphy.
He retired from Penn Ventilator in Keyser, W.Va. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include three daughters, Judy Murphy, Fredericksburg, Va., Joyce Resh, Stafford, Va., and Joy Sowers, Elkridge; one son, Jay Murphy, Sharpsburg; one sister, Thelma Brant, McHenry; one brother, Marvin Murphy, Grantsville; and six grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport. A service was conducted at the Dry Run Mennonite Church on Monday, Aug. 30, with the Rev. Alva Maust, the Rev. Sanford Bender, and the Rev. Leonard Orndorff officiating. Interment was in the Murphy Cemetery, Dry Run, where full military rites were accorded by members of American Legion Post 71, Oakland.
L. MAE DEBERRY
L. Mae DeBerry, 82, Oakland, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999, at the Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home, Oakland.
Born March 27, 1917, in Greenland Gap, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Harrison Evans and Maude (Lemon) Evans. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Walter C. DeBerry, in 12986.
She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Oakland, where in the past she served as a circle leader and Sunday School teacher. She was a bloodmobile volunteer and at one time managed the local volunteer service center.
Surviving are two sons, Walter F. DeBerry, Oakland, and James C. DeBerry, Arnold; and one daughter, Martha V. DeBerry, Oakland.
Friends were received at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, where a service was conducted Monday, Aug. 30, with the Rev. Roger Harrison officiating. Interment was in the DeBerry Family Cemetery.

ALONZO O. BUTLER
Alonzo Olean 'Lad' Butler, 71, Boynton, Pa., died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, at his home.
Born April 8, 1928, in Grantsville, he was the son of the late Truman and Clara Ellen (Wilt) Butler.
He was employed as a stock clerk for Bailey Controls, Willowick, Ohio, prior to his retirement. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving are one daughter, Yvonne McGlynn, Boynton; one stepdaughter, Debra Graves, Magnolia, Texas; two stepsons, Bill Pope, Willowick, and John Pope, Houston, Texas; one sister, Gladys Frazee, Oakland; and eight grandchildren.
Friends were received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, where a service was conducted Saturday, Aug. 28, with the Rev. Robert Furr officiating. Interment was in the New Germany Methodist Cemetery, Grantsville.
VICKIE J. LINDEMAN
Vickie Jane Lindeman, 51, Boynton, Pa., died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 1999, at the Meyersdale (Pa.) Medical Center.
Born Sept. 2, 1947, in Meyersdale, she was a daughter of Betty (Hochard) Lindeman, Boynton, with whom she resided, and the late Clyde Lindeman. She was also preceded in death by sister, Linda Lindeman.
She was employed as a textile worker at the Flushing Shirt Factory for 33 years, and was a member of the Boynton Church of God and the Salisbury (Pa.) Firemen’s Auxiliary.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by one sister, Penny Billmeyer, Grantsville.

ROBERT A. MERRILL
Robert A. Merrill, Canton, Ohio, formerly of Oakland, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999, at his home.
Born Jan. 4, 1939, in Garrett County, he was the son of Naomi C. (Moon) Merrill, Oakland, and the late Truman C. Merrill.
He was an inspector for Republic Steel, Canton, and was a member of the Republic Steelworkers Union.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by one sister, Emilie J. Hoye, Mtn. Lake Park.
Friends will be received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, Thursday. A service will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday, Sept. 3, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Mark Hickman officiating. Interment will follow in the Deer Park Cemetery.
ANNA L. POLCE
Anna Lawrence Polce, 81, Masontown, W.Va., died Monday, Sept. 1, 1999, at her home.
Born April 3, 1918, in Harding, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Maria and Cesido Giallorenzo Lawrence. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Americo Polce; two sons, Franklin Polce and Robert Polce; two sisters; three brothers; one half-brother; two step-brothers; and one half-sister.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Zita’s Catholic Church, Masontown. She was also a member of Columbian Federation Lodge Auxiliary of Morgantown, W.Va., and worked with the Masontown Volunteer Firemen’s Auxiliary.
Survivors include one son, James Polce, Masontown; one adopted son, Guido Polce, Masontown; one half-brother, Johnny Polce, Masontown; one step-brother, Vespucci Polce, Masontown; 13 grandchildren, including some from Garrett County; and seven great-grandchildren
Friends will be received at the Waldeck Funeral Home, Masontown, from to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, Thursday, and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday. A Christian Wake Service will be conducted at the funeral home at 8 p.m. on Friday.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Zita’s Catholic Church on Saturday, Sept. 4, at 10 a.m., with Father Jerome McKenna as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Masontown Cemetery.
The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to Hospice Care Corp. of Preston County.
THEODORE D. KITTLEBERGER
Theodore D. Kittleberger, 62, Mtn. Lake Park, died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, at the Cuppett-Weeks Nursing Home, Oakland.
Born May 6, 1937, in Clearfield, Pa., he was the son of the late Theodore B. and Vadna E. P)(Parks) Kittleberger.
He was a retired auto mechanic.
Surviving are one daughter, Karen Kittleberger, Florida; and two sisters, Iva M. Soepel, Odenton, and Sharon L. Sands, Taneytown.
At Mr. Kittleberger’s request, his body was cremated. There will be no viewing or service.
