GEORGE J. DAVIS
ROMNEY, W.Va. -- George Junior "Sam" Davis, 69, of Romney, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.
Born Jan. 15, 1932, in Romney, he was the son of the late George William and Thelma Louise (Shank) Davis. He also was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary V. (Swick) Davis; his second wife, Anna M. (Simmons) Davis; one son, George W. Davis; one infant son, one brother, Arlin W. "Bill" Davis; and four sisters, Vivian "Viv" Wolford, June Romero, Georgianna Grimsley and Julia Davis.
Mr. Davis was a bartender. He was Protestant by faith and was a life member of both the VFW Wappocomo Post 1101 and the American Legion Hampshire Post 91. He served his country in the Army from 1950 to 1953 during the Korean Conflict and also in Germany.
Surviving are one son, George Sammy Davis, Norfolk, Va.; one daughter, Linda Georgianna Puffinburger and husband, Michael, Romney; three sisters, Virginia Minshall, Keyser; Dorothy "Tillie" Payne, Albuquerque, N.M.; Betty L. Moreland, Romney; one grandson, Jonathan William Robert Puffinburger, Romney; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Shaffer Funeral Home, Romney, on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Brian Moreland officiating. Interment will be in Ebenezer Cemetery, Romney.
Military graveside rites will be accorded by the Veteran's Organizations of Hampshire County.
Memorial contributions may be to the American Cancer Society or the American Legion Post 91 Romney Rifle Squad.
WALTER F. FILES JR.
CUMBERLAND -- Walter Franklin "Rabbit" Files Jr., 76, of 741 Dale Ave., Cumberland, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at the Western Maryland Health System Memorial campus.
Born June 21, 1925, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Walter Franklin Files Sr. and Ida Viola (Shears) Files.
Rabbit was a retired electrician from Local 307. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he also was a life member of Henry Hart Post 1411, VFW, and a member of the Fort Cumberland Post 13 American Legion.
A loving husband, father and granddad, Rabbit's memories will always be cherished by all his family and friends, especially his grandchildren who considered him their best friend.
Surviving are his wife, Norma G. (Robinette) Files; one son, Walter F. "Buddy" Files III and wife, Teresa, Cumberland; three daughters, Diane L. Stakem and husband, Michael, Cumberland; Sharon K. Kessell and husband, James, Hyndman, Pa.; Sue E. Lewis and husband, Robert, Cumberland; two brothers, Bill Files, Cumberland; Ronald Files and wife, Barbara, Carpenters Addition, W.Va.; two sisters, Grace Frickey, Cumberland; Pat Noel and husband, Sam, Cumberland; 10 grandchildren, Suzanne Appel, Bryce Wallizer, Shauna Lewis, Shawn Stakem, Brett Files, Kelly Stakem, Christie Files, Jason Files, Leland Kessell and Garrett Kessell; and one great-granddaughter, Harper Sue Appel.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Lloyd B. McCanna officiating. Interment will be in the Maryland Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap.
Pallbearers will be Bryce Wallizer, Shauna Lewis, Shawn Stakem, Kelly Stakem, Brett Files, Christie Files, Jason Files and Todd Appel. Honorary pallbearers will be Suzanne Appel, Leland Wallizer and Garrett Wallizer.
Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
ERNEST D. SHILLINGBURG
BROOKHAVEN, W.Va. -- Ernest Dexter Shillingburg, 81, of Brookhaven, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at his home following a long battle with cancer.
Born April 10, 1920, in Dodson, Md., he was the son of the late William Rudolephus and Fannie Ellen Sollars Shillingburg.
Mr. Shillingburg was a retired section foreman with Consol Coal Company No. 3 with 40 years of service. He served with the Navy Cee Bees in the Pacific Theatre during World War II and was a life member of the VFW. He enjoyed camping, fishing and spending time with his family.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Pauline White Shillingburg; three daughters, Betty Hanlin and fiancé, Philip Colanero, Cassville; Kathy and Leroy Jencks, Morgantown; and Tammy Reeves and Robert McCleary, Salisbury, Pa.; two sons and spouses, Gary D. and Wendy Shillingburg, Beaufort, S.C.; and Ernest and Judy Shillingburg, Destin, Fla.; one son-in-law, Robert Penzes, Granville; three sisters, Katherine Dumire, Morgantown; Helen Menefee, Farmington; Virginia Liller, Monaca, Pa.; 11 grandchildren, Theresa, Scott, Gary, Michelle, Suzie, Jennifer, Paula, Stephanie, Daniel, Taylor and Hayden; two step grandchildren, Michael and Natasha; four great-grandchildren, Christopher, Christian, Heather and Harley; and four step great-grandchildren, Race, Tina, Brandon and Bret.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Ellen Grace Penzes, four brothers and three sisters.
Friends will be received at the McCulla Funeral Home on Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. service with Tom Sollars officiating. Interment will be at Beverly Hills cemetery with graveside military services conducted by the Westover VFW Post 9916.
KATHRYN R. HIXSON
CUMBERLAND -- Kathryn R. Hixson, 92, of Cumberland, died Monday, July 2, 2001, at New Hope II, Cumberland.
Born on Feb. 7, 1909, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late John P. and Lyda (Arnold) Knieriem. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Karl Hixson; two sisters, Marjorie Knieriem and Mary Weimer; and five brothers, Don, John, Henry, Brook and Arnold Knieriem.
Mrs. Hixson had been a secretary at the Celanese Corp. She had also worked at Hoschield-Kohn Department Store and Union Trust Bank.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Mrs. Hixson was a former member of the Cumberland Chapter #56, O.E.S., Ladies Auxiliary, Ft. Cumberland Post #13, American Legion and Ladies Auxiliary of the 40 & 8.
Survivors include one sister, Martha McNeil and husband Lloyd, Cumberland; and several nieces and nephews.
A private family funeral will be held with interment in Hillcrest Burial Park.
The Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., Cumberland, is in charge of the arrangements.
ALSTON M. TIMBROOK
KEYSER, W.Va. -- Alston M. Timbrook, 80, of Route 1, Box 161-F, Keyser departed this life on Saturday, June 30, 2001, at the Sacred Heart Hospital. He went home to spend eternity with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and to be with his beloved wife, Loretta, whom he has so sorely missed since her death.
Born on March 7, 1921 at Keyser, he was a son of the late Arthur and Beulah (Payne) Timbrook. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Loretta M. (Decker) Timbrook on Aug. 7, 1999.
Mr. Timbrook was retired as a heavy equipment operator with Local 37, Operating Engineers, Cumberland. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theatre of Operations. Alston was very well known in the community as a top notch mechanic, always willing to help his friends and neighbors in keeping their cars on the road. He also attended the former Mead Chapel United Methodist Church on Knobley Road.
He is survived by two sons, Michael S. Timbrook and wife Linda, Short Gap, G. Scott Timbrook and wife Connie, Keyser; one daughter, Vicki R. Klavuhn and husband Gary, Short Gap; one brother, Jim Timbrook and wife Talitha, Burlington; three grandsons, B. Chris Klavuhn, Timothy S. Klavuhn, and Matthew S. Timbrook; two granddaughters, Molly A. Laraway and Susan E. Klavuhn; and one great-grandson, Austin E. Laraway.
Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Tuesday from 1 to 2 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Tuesday at 2 p.m. with Gary Klavuhn officiating.
Interment will be in the Biser Cemetery, Knobley Road, Keyser.
Dad and Granddaddy, you will be greatly missed, you meant so much, but we rejoice that you are with Jesus and with Mom and Grandma.
BARBARA C. HANLIN
MOUNT STORM, W.Va. -- Barbara Catherine Hanlin, 95, died Sunday, July 1, 2001, in the Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home in Oakland, Md.
Born on Oct. 25, 1905, at Wilson, she was a daughter of the late Emory and Margaret (Cummings) Wimer. Barbara was also preceded in death by her husband, Homer C. Hanlin.
She is survived by a sister, Pansy Kent and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received on Thursday from 10:30 a.m. until 12 noon at the Bayard Church of God.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon in the church with the Rev. William McCallister officiating.
Interment will be in the Mount Storm Cemetery.
Arrangements are by the David A. Burdock Funeral Home in Kitzmiller, Md.
ERMA J. PERETTI
FROSTBURG -- Erma Jean Peretti, 72, of Albert Avenue, Frostburg, died Sunday, July 1, 2001, at her residence after a lengthy illness.
Born on April 28, 1929, in Frostburg, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Anna (Thomas) Lloyd. Mrs. Peretti was also preceded in death by one brother, Henry "Hank" Lloyd.
She was a graduate of Beall High School Class of 1946, and was a member of Saint Michael's Catholic Church, Frostburg.
Mrs. Peretti was employed at Griffiths of Frostburg as an interior decorator for 20 years. In 1977, she opened her own business, Cellarosa Ceramics, where she sold and taught classes for 20 years. She volunteered for 16 years in the Gift Shop at the Frostburg Village Nursing Home.
Erma had a natural talent for art. She enjoyed painting, sewing, flowers, crossword puzzles and square dancing. Her greatest joy was her husband, children and grandchildren.
Mrs. Peretti is survived by her husband, Augustine J. "Gus" Peretti; two sons, Robert Peretti and wife Sheri, Latrobe, Pa., and Ronald Peretti and wife Kim, Short Gap, W.Va.; one daughter, Patricia Kenney and husband Craig, Frostburg; seven grandchildren, Lauren, Katelyn and Nicholas Peretti, Adam and Adrianna Kenney, and Angela and Joseph Peretti; one sister, Nancy L. Connor and husband Donald, Frostburg; two sisters-in-law, Carolyn Miller and husband Jim, and Mary A. Peretti; one brother-in-law, Francis Peretti and wife Mary, Frostburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the Durst Funeral Home, P.A., 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. (including a Christian Wake service at 8:30 p.m. with the Rev. Father William Moody officiating) and Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Saint Michael's Church on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Father Doug Kenney, Baltimore, as celebrant.
Interment will be in Saint Michael's Cemetery.
