MARY ELIZABETH "LIBBY" BRINKER SMITH
CUMBERLAND -- Mary Elizabeth "Libby" Brinker Smith, 89, of Cumberland, died Saturday, June 23, 2001, at Memorial Hospital.
Born on Oct. 3, 1911, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Henrey and Edith (Kraus) Rudolph. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Regis X. Brinker in 1981; her second husband, W. Clay Smith in 1997; and two brothers, Charles and William Rudolph.
Libby was a homemaker, an employee of Footers Dye Works, and Celanese, before her marriage. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the church choir, and the church sodality, the Mother's Club, Catholic Daughters of America, and a volunteer for the American Red Cross.
Surviving are one daughter, Blanche "Billie" Mahaney and husband Ralph E. "Skip" Mahaney Jr., Kensington; two sons, Robert R. "Bob" Brinker and wife Glenna, Hendersonville, N.C., Raymond F. "Ray" Brinker and wife Dianne, Raleigh, N.C.; one sister, Bertha Morey, Cumberland; several nieces and nephews, two of whom are very special, Dr. Rita Brinker and Victoria Moreland; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Saturday, June 30, 2001, from 4 to 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday, July 1, 2001, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Milton A. Hipsley officiating.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
RACHEL J. DAVIS
CUMBERLAND -- Rachel Jane Davis, 96, formerly of the Cumberland Arms Apartments, died Saturday, June 23, 2001, at the Lions Manor Nursing Home.
Born on June 21, 1905, in Cambria, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Oscar Hestand and Lillie Russell. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Elmer E. Davis in 1973.
Mrs. Davis was a homemaker. She was a member of the LaVale Baptist Church and the Leadbetter Sunday School Class.
Surviving are two sons, Donald E. Davis and wife Millie, LaVale, their daughter, Donna Higson, LaVale, and granddaughter, Lori VanPelt, Cumberland, Billy Joe Davis and wife Sara L. Davis, Cumberland, their daughter, Connie Jo Davis and son, James B. Davis, both of Gaithersburg; and one daughter, the late Barbara DeHaven and husband Eldridge, Atlanta, Ga., and their daughter, Dara DeHaven, Atlanta.
Funeral services and interment will be private.

M. DOUGLAS CALLIS
OAKLAND -- M. Douglas "Doug" Callis, 49, of Oakland, died Saturday, June 23, 2001, at his home.
Born on Oct. 6, 1951, in Alexandria, Va., he was a son of the late Melvin "Buss" Callis and Eloise (Friend) Callis. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Marsha (Sweitzer) Callis.
Mr. Callis was a self-employed excavating contractor. He taught school at one time and was the past Boy Scout leader of Troop 95.
Surviving are one son, Scott D. Callis, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; one daughter, Michelle L. Callis, Virginia Beach, Va.; and one brother, Brian E. Callis, Loch Lynn.
Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
A Memorial Service will be conducted at the Mountain Lake Independent Baptist Church, on Tuesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dennis Leatherman officiating.
Interment will be private.
MARSHALL A. MARAVELIS SR.
HANCOCK -- Marshall A. Maravelis Sr., 73, formerly of Hancock, and a resident of Valley View Nursing Home in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Saturday, June 23, 2001, at the Morgan County War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs.
Born on Feb. 8, 1928, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Harry L. and Audrey Odessa Hott Maravelis.
He owned and operated Marshall's Shoe Repair in Hancock for over 60 years. He attended the Hancock Assembly of God Church.
He is survived by five daughters, Lois Manfull of Falling Waters, W.Va., Marsha Bowers and Roseann Booth of Berkeley Springs, Karen Hensell of Warfordsburg, Pa., and Julie Hale of Everett, Pa.; two sons, Marshall Maravelis Jr. of Williamsport, and Michael Maravelis of Hedgesville, W.Va.; two sisters, Sadie Cunningham of Baltimore, and Rae White of Cumberland; two brothers, Royce Maravelis of Williamsport, and Virgil Maravelis of Westminster; and 15 grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by one brother, Harry Maravelis Jr.
A service will be held Wednesday, June 27 at 11 a.m. at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock, with the Rev. George Lashley officiating.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. For the convenience of family and friends, the funeral home will be open from 2 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday.
MARY P. JOHNSTON
BALTIMORE -- Mary Pearl (Brown) Johnston, 58, of Baltimore, passed away on Saturday evening, June 23, 2001, at her home in Baltimore.
She was the daughter of the late Warden and Mondell Brown.
Mary worked at Travelers Insurance Company as a claims clerk for 30 years. She attended Salem United Methodist Church in Highlandtown.
Surviving are her son, Tony Lee, Baltimore; two brothers, Eddie Brown, Clarksville, and George Brown, Eldersburg; four sisters, Katherine Wotring, Clarksville, Mildred O'Haver, Loch Lynn, Linda White, Baltimore, and Ima Thomas, Terra Alta, W.Va.; 14 nieces and nephews; and 13 great-nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mary's adopted charity, Garrett County Relay for Life. Checks can be made payable to the American Cancer Society, mailed to Doug Riley, Lyndal Road, Oakland, MD 21550.
Friends may call at the Arthur Wright Funeral Home in Terra Alta, W.Va., on Monday, June 25 from 3 to 9 p.m. where services will be held on Tuesday, June 26 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Michael Mudge officiating.
Interment will be in the Terra Alta Cemetery.
DORIS F. MCCREARY
CUMBERLAND -- Doris F. McCreary, 72, of Cumberland, died Friday, June 22, 2001, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Linda F. and Rick Stewart and their daughters, Christy and Jenny.
Born on Oct. 29, 1928, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late John and Maleta (Bennett) Hitchins. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Calvin R. McCreary in 1998.
Mrs. McCreary was retired from the housekeeping department of Sacred Heart Hospital, and she was a graduate of Allegany High School Class of 1945.
Mrs. McCreary attended Faith Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed gardening, doing crafts, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Doris will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
In addition to her daughter and her family, surviving are one son, Ronald R. McCreary and wife Doris, all of Cumberland; one grandson, Jeremy Jack; and one great-granddaughter, Katelyn Jack.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. only.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 12:30 p.m. with the Rev. LeRoy Capper officiating.
Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale.
Pallbearers will be Jessie Wilson, Jeremy Wilson, Dan Thompson, Larry Shewbridge, Dick Shewbridge and Jeremy Jack.
