CUMBERLAND -- Friends for Joseph Gerard Madden will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Monday at 11 a.m.
Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap, Flintstone.
THOMAS R. DOUGLAS
BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. -- Thomas Reece Douglas, 84, of Berkeley Springs, died Friday, June 22, 2001, at his home.
Born on July 22, 1916, in McKees Rocks, Pa., he was the son of the late Earl May and Harriet Garfield (Neat) Douglas. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Campbell Douglas in 1968.
He graduated from Penn Avenue High School, Cumberland, Md., where his family moved following his father's death in a train wreck in 1918. He worked at various jobs until joining the U.S. Army in World War II. He served with the 697th Field Artillery Battalion in North Africa and Italy, and was later part of a military police unit in Germany. He was recalled to the Army for the Korean Conflict.
He attended college on the G.I. Bill and graduated from Frostburg State University in 1954, later earning advanced degrees at the University of Maryland and other institutions. He taught English, Drama, and Social Studies in Baltimore County public schools from the mid-1950's until his retirement in 1979, primarily at Sudbrook Junior High School in the Pikesville area. He lived in Reisterstown for 40 years.
He was the set designer and lighting technician for numerous school and semi-professional theatrical productions in the Baltimore area, and also created exhibits for the Baltimore County Historical Society's museum.
Surviving are his son, John Thomas Douglas, Berkeley Springs; two grandchildren, John Campbell Douglas and Steven Michael Douglas, both of Berkeley Springs; and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Cumberland.
The Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, is in charge of the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Morgan County Public Library, 204 N. Washington St., Berkeley Springs, WV 25411.
ERMALINDA J. MCCULLOUGH
CUMBERLAND -- Friends for Ermalinda J. "Lena" McCullough will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

VERDA R. ROWE
CUMBERLAND -- Verda R. (Blank) Rowe, 54, of Cumberland, died Friday, June 22, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born on Jan. 15, 1947, in Mount Savage, she was the daughter of the late Francis Levi and Mary Catherine (Hunt) Blank. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Randy Blank and James Blank; and one sister, Gloria Redenbaugh.
Mrs. Rowe had been employed by the Western Maryland Health Systems. She had been a dietitian for 10 years at the St. Vincent dePaul Nursing Home.
She was Catholic by faith.
Survivors include three daughters, Cynthia Rosenberger, with whom she resided, Deborah Fleckenstein and Sharon Kessler, Cumberland; one son, Robert Fleckenstein, Cumberland; two brothers, Elmer Blank and wife Helen, Mount Savage, and Don Blank and wife Beverly, Barrelville; three sisters, Virginia Bury, Dundalk, Shirley Jenkins and Carolyn Monahan and husband Ed, all of Mount Savage; six grandchildren, Crystal, Melissa, Eric and Michael Rosenberger, Tim Kenney and Lauren Kessler; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Rowe's body is being cremated.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

LENA S. VANDEGRIFT
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- Lena S. Vandegrift, 85, of Berk Square Drive, Martinsburg, formerly of Cumberland, Md., died Friday, June 22, 2001, at City Hospital, Martinsburg.
Born on Jan. 16, 1916, in Hamilton, she was the daughter of the late William Shomo and Anna (Combs) Shomo. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ralph M. Vandegrift on April 5, 1993.
Mrs. Vandegrift was a retired cook at Memorial Hospital in Cumberland, and formerly worked at the Wilson Meat Co., in Cumberland. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by a stepson, Richard Vandegrift, Williamsport, Md.; three stepdaughters, Sherilyn Barnhart, Jones Spring, Annalee Vandegrift, Bettie Lou Elledge, Aberdeen, Md.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Kight Funeral Home, 309-311 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 12 noon until 1 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Edward R. Dickel officiating.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
WILLIAM J. BEADLING
HYNDMAN, Pa. -- William J. Beadling, 59, of 5th Ave., Hyndman, formerly of New Castle, died Saturday, June 23, 2001, at WMHS Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born on Jan. 5, 1942, in Pittsburgh, he was a son of Alice M. (Lewis) Beadling, New Castle, and the late Raymond H. Beadling.
Surviving are Eileen A. (Cwynar) Beadling, his wife of 35 years, whom he married
on June 18, 1966; one brother, Raymond H. Beadling Jr. and wife Jane, Upper Marlboro, Md.; three brothers-in-law, Walter Cwynar and wife Pat, Thomas Cwynar and wife Sue, and Robert Cwynar; three nieces, Gwendolyn and Brenda Beadling and Cheryl Garcia and husband Serafin; three great-nephews, Andrew Johnson and Serafin and Nicholas Garcia; one great-niece, Tina Garcia; and special Godson, Craig Weiss; and John Zorinich, his mother's special friend; step-niece, Angela Silvers; and step-nephews, Philip and Christopher Silvers.
He was also preceded in death by one hour by his mother-in-law, Helen Cwynar.
Mr. Beadling was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was proprietor of Hillbilly Haven, Fairhope. He was formerly a supervisor of the Kelly-Springfield Tire Company. He was active in the Hyndman Rod and Gun Club and the Kennells Mills Sportsmen's Club. He was a member of the Oscar Jordan Post VFW and the Berlin American Legion.
Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, 169 Clarence St., Hyndman, from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, June 26, 2001.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at 11 a.m.
Interment will be in Hyndman Cemetery.
Military honors will be conferred graveside by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard.
RUTH C. MCDOWELL
BLOOMINGTON -- Ruth Custer McDowell heard God's voice calling her "home" on June 22, 2001, and she went to rest with him eternally. She passed away after an extended illness at the home of her daughter, Esthermay Brooks.
Born on May 23, 1918, in Lonaconing, she was the daughter of the late John T. Wilkes and Alice (Myers) Wilkes Miller. She was also preceded in death by her stepfather, Harry E. Miller; a great-grandchild, Christopher; and her husband of 47 years, the Rev. Oliver T. Custer.
She is survived by two sisters, Florence Henderson of Cleburne, Texas, and Josephine Elsberg of Alexandria, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
Also surviving are her husband of 11 years, Donald H. McDowell of Bloomington. Ruth leaves three children, whom she adored and they loved and admired her very much. They are Ruthann Stokes and husband Clyde, Ronald Custer and wife Myrna, and Esthermay Brooks and husband Bill; seven grandchildren, Cheryl, Zanc, Candi, Steven, Tiffany, Rachelle, Marie, Jason and Christan; and five great-grandchildren, Joshua, Stephen, Joey, Robbie and Shane.
She was a Minister with the Assemblies of God along with her husband, Oliver. They attended Zion Bible Institute in East Providence, R.I., and graduated in 1952. Ruth had the honor of being Valedictorian of her class, as well as Class Historian. They remained at Zion four more years as faculty members and ministers in several churches in the New England area.
Upon their return to Maryland, they ministered together in the Western Md., and D.C. areas and in Martinsburg, W.Va. They pastored the Beth-Shan Assembly of God Church in Cumberland, for several years before returning to Zion in 1975. They remained there as faculty members, ministers and counselors until Oliver's death in 1985.
Ruth returned to Maryland and married
Don McDowell in 1990 and resided in Bloomington until her illness three years ago.
While in Bloomington, she attended the Bloomington Methodist Church, where she was an active participant and continued as an ordained minister with the Assemblies of God.
She knew from an early age she would be ministering to people of God's love and compassion. That call upon her life afforded her the opportunity to meet people from all nations and cultures including Kings, Prices, diplomats, politicians and anyone she came in contact with. Lifetime friends and family will miss her dearly, but rejoice in the knowledge that she is residing with God in Heaven. We love you Mother.
The family will receive friends at the Bloomington United Methodist Church, Bloomington, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted there on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Kris Newman and the Rev. Donald Nelson officiating.
Interment will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Moscow Mills.
