JOSEPH G. MADDEN
CUMBERLAND -- Joseph Gerard Madden, 71, of Cumberland, died Thursday, June 21, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born on April 11, 1930, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Joseph Anthony and Kathleen Cecelia (Kenney) Madden.
Mr. Madden was a retired English Instructor at Allegany College and former employee of The Book Center. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran having served as a Navigator with the Strategic Air Command and a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
Surviving are one sister, Mary Rita Beck and husband Dan, Cumberland; two nephews, Jeffrey D. Beck and wife Judi, and David E. Beck; two nieces, Debra Ann Beck and Lori Gowans and husband Bryan; three great-nephews, Jeremy, Jesse and Andrew; and two great-nieces, Katie and Luci.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake service will be conducted on Sunday at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Monday at 11 a.m.
Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap, Flintstone.
Pallbearers will be Howard Hovatter, James Zamagias, Joseph McKay, Robert Madden, William Zapf and John Dougherty.
GLENDON E. NIXON
GRANTSVILLE -- Glendon Edward Nixon, 77, of 74 Stone Hill, Grantsville, died Friday, June 22, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born on Aug. 23, 1923, in Cumberland, he was a son of the late John and Agnes (Malone) Nixon.
Mr. Nixon attended St. Michael's Catholic Church, West Salisbury, Pa. He was a retired machine operator for Reynolds Metals Co., Richmond, Va. He was a U.S. Army/Air Corps veteran of World War II, and was a member of Grantsville Post 214, American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Kathryn J. (Resh) Nixon; one stepdaughter, Donna Lichliter, Salisbury; one brother, Bernard Nixon, and one sister, Melda Alderton, both of Cumberland; and two step-grandchildren, Brian and Melody Lichliter.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, on Monday, June 25, 2001, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Bernard White and the Rev. Connell Chaney officiating.
Interment will be in Grantsville Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be accorded by Grantsville Post 214, American Legion.
ERMALINDA J. MCCULLOUGH
CUMBERLAND -- Ermalinda J. "Lena" McCullough, 81, of Cumberland, went to be with the Lord on Friday, June 22, 2001, at her residence.
Born on Oct. 29, 1919, in Midland, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John A. and Aide (Grande) Divico. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Julia Bertone.
Mrs. McCullough was a homemaker and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. She had a very large family, who loved her very much, and she will be greatly missed.
Surviving are her husband, William H. McCullough; three daughters, Carol J. Clise, Vickie L. Hess and husband Greg, and Barbara Sue Lucas, all of Cumberland; two sons, William H. McCullough Jr. and wife Sandie, Warren, Ohio, John A. McCullough and wife Vicky, Wiley Ford, W.Va.; one sister, Anna Pannone, Cumberland; one brother, John J. Divico and wife Mildred, Cumberland; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Snyder, Short Gap, W.Va.; 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. There will be a Christian Wake Service conducted on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Monday at 9 a.m.
Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap, Flintstone.
Pallbearers will be grandsons.
MARYLEA LEATHERMAN
KEYSER, W.Va. -- Marylea Leatherman, 70, formerly of 33 N. Water St., Keyser, died Friday, June 22, 2001, at Harrisonburg, Va.
Born on Sept. 17, 1930, in Dorcas, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John Edward and Eula Ethel (Stewart) Thorn. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles G. Leatherman; a brother, Richard Thorn; and a sister, Ada Ditton.
Mrs. Leatherman was a homemaker. She was a member of the Keyser Church of the Brethren.
Surviving are two sons, the Rev. Charles "Chip" Leatherman and wife Rachel, Harrisonburg, Va., and Rodney L. Leatherman and wife Ruth, Antioch; three brothers, Henry Thorn, Burlington, Ernest Thorne, Burlington, and Otis Thorne, Antioch; five sisters, Idella Barr, Rig, Viola McAvoy, Burlington, Goldie Haggerty, Keyser, Shirley Cathell, Keyser, and Gladys Dodds, Fulks Run, Va.; six grandchildren, Renae Mitchell, Jennifer Biller, Cheryl Morris, Cindi Leatherman, Katie Leatherman and Jonathan Leatherman; and two great-grandchildren, Hannah Sager and Brooklyn Mitchell.
Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted in the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Monday at 2 p.m.
Interment will be in the Thrush Cemetery, Antioch.
HARRY D. SUTHERLAND
BARTON -- Harry Dale Sutherland, 70, of 19711 Old Miller Road, Barton, went to be with his Lord on June 22, 2001.
Born on June 7, 1931, in Barton, he was the son of the late Harry and Nina (Tasker) Sutherland.
He was a loving husband and father and faithful servant of God. He was kind, generous and loving always, even after being paralyzed by a stroke for 10 years.
Mr. Sutherland retired from Westvaco Corp., in 1991 after 40 years of service. He attended the Assembly of God Church, Lonaconing, and the Bethel Holiness Church, Lonaconing. He was a United States Navy veteran of the Korean War. He loved NASCAR racing and his family but, most of all he loved the Lord Jesus Christ.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Marlene (Linkswiler) Sutherland; a daughter, Dalene Ruhe and husband Mark of Barton; a son, Glenn Sutherland and special friend Karen Loar of Barton; three grandsons, Jeremy Smith of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Jordan Smith of Barton, and Joel Sutherland of Keyser, W.Va.; a sister, Helen Kyle and husband Reginald of Barton; one niece; one nephew; and three great-nephews. He had three faithful friends, Bill Bradley, who visited him every week since he had his stroke in 1991, Wayne Michaels of Westernport, and Bob Hardman of Barton.
Dale donated his body to the Robert C. Byrd Health Services Center in Morgantown, W.Va.
There will be no visitation.
Memorial services will be held at the Bethel Holiness Church, Lonaconing, on Monday at 3 p.m. with Pastor George Loar officiating.
Any contributions may be made to Tri-Towns Rescue Squad or Barton Fire Company. His favorite charity was Feed the Children.
Contribution cards can be picked up from Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, which is in charge of the arrangements, or at the church prior to the memorial service.
MARY K. ALLEN
CUMBERLAND -- Mary Katherine (McGowan) Allen, 78, of Potomac Park, died Thursday, June 21, 2001, at Memorial Hospital.
Born on Jan. 4, 1923, in Midland, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Jane (Manley) McGowan. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John S. Allen on July 23, 1999; and one brother, Francis McGowan.
Mrs. Allen was a homemaker. She was a graduate of Central High School, Lonaconing, a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Cresaptown, the Church Ladies Auxiliary, El Fidel Club and Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary.
Surviving are two daughters, Celeste Joyce and husband Fred, Gaithersburg, Mary Jane Neubeiser and husband Robert, Damascus; one sister, Margaret Brown, Shepherdstown, W.Va.; six grandchildren, James Joyce, Douglas Joyce, Michael Neubeiser, David Neubeiser, Kevin Neubeiser and Katie Neubeiser.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Cresaptown, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake Service will be conducted Friday at 8 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Marvin Justi, O.F.M., Cap., as celebrant.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
