MARY M. DOUGHERTY
CUMBERLAND -- Mary Margaret Dougherty, 89, of Cumberland, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born May 18, 1912 in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late John J. and Rose (Fleckenstein) Dougherty. She was also preceded in death by one brother, John Joseph Dougherty and one sister, Roseann Blake.
Miss Dougherty was a school teacher for the Allegany County Board of Education. She taught at Penn Avenue School and retired in 1985. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the church Sodality, the Ursuline Associates, the National Education Association, Retired Teachers Association of Maryland and the Cumberland Moose.
Surviving are one niece, Joanne Dougherty Vaughan and husband Joe, Dallas, Texas; great niece, Alexis Blake, Baltimore; and numerous cousins.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Rosary will be conducted at the funeral home Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Monday at 12 noon with Bishop Andrew J. McDonald, former Bishop of Little Rock Arkansas and the Rev. William Foley, Pastor of the Annunciation Church in Baltimore, as celebrants.
Interment will be in SS Peter Paul Cemetery, Cumberland.

BROTHER THOMAS TOMASUNAS
PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Brother Thomas Tomasunas, OFM Cap., 74, of Friar of the Augustine Province of the Capuchin Franciscan Order, died on Friday, June 15, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center, Pittsburgh, after a short illness.
Born on June 25, 1926 in Grand Rapids, Mich., he was the son of the late John and Helen (Zemaitis) Tomasunas. Given the name Edward at birth, he took the name of "Thomas" on professing vows of poverty, chastity and obedience in the Capuchin Franciscan Order on Feb. 28 1955.
Brother Thomas worked in fraternity service within the Capuchin Franciscan Order throughout his religious life. Noted as a generous and skilled tailor, cook, sacristan and instructor for the younger friars. Brother Thomas anticipated the needs of those he served and often performed the most humble tasks around the friary. He never ceased to offer a shining example of true brotherhood, love and grace.
His assignments ranged from the Capuchin Brothers Training Program in Cumberland, (1959-1965, 1968-1977), to service in other friaries across the Middle Atlantic Capuchin Province (Saint Mary, Herman, 1965-1968, 1978-1980, Saint Conrad Friary, Annapolis, 1977-1978). For the past 21 years (1980-2001). Brother Thomas worked among the friars at St. Augustine Friary, Lawrenceville, Pittsburgh.
Brother Thomas was a veteran of the U.S. Army which he served faithfully and commendably from Oct., 1944 through Feb., 1947.
He is survived by over 10, 000 Capuchin Franciscan brothers throughout the world and by his brothers, John (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and William (Newaygo, Mich.) and his sister, Mary Kumko (Grand Rapids, Mich.). He was preceded in death by his brothers Albert and Charles.
Viewing will take place of Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Saint Augustine Friary, 221 36th St., Pittsburgh, from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Saturday, June 17, 2001, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A wake service will be celebrated in the Friary at 8 p.m. The body will be transferred to Saint Augustine Church, 220-37th St., on Monday, June 18, 2001, where the Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. The Very Rev. Paul Kuppe, OFM Cap., Province of Saint Augustine, will preside.
Burial will follow in the friars' plot at Saint Augustine Cemetery, Millvale.

MEYERSDALE, Pa. -- Ottis D. Baer, 68, of Meyersdale, died June 14, 2001, at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, Johnstown.
Born Aug. 6, 1932 in Meyersdale, he was a son of the late George E. and Mary (Keefer) Baer.
Mr. Baer was a high school physics teacher at Somerset Senior High School for 37 years. A member of Amity United Church of Christ, Meyersdale. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Ottis enjoyed travel, trains, photography, teaching, wood working, home improvement, and computers.
He is survived by his wife, Manda L. Baer; three brothers, Glenn H., Westminster, Md., Leo E., Alexandria, Va., Allan J., Clarksville, Md.; a sister, Mary Ada, Clarksville; two step-sons, Albert C. Dively, Meyersdale and Richard Dively, Waverly, Ohio; a step-daughter, Suzanne M. Dively-Smith, Williamsport; and nephews, Gary L., Berlin, Md., Donald L. Alexandria, Va., and Wayne E. Washington, W.Va.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday at the Price Funeral Home, Meyersdale.
Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday at Amity United Church of Christ, Meyersdale, with the Rev. Bruce Ashlock officiating.

LINDA K. SWICKARD
CRESAPTOWN -- Linda Kay Swickard, 46, of Cresaptown, formerly of LaVale, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at her residence.
Born Feb. 28, 1955, in Cumberland, she was a daughter of Nellie L. (Weimer) Emerick, Wellersburg, Pa., and the late D. Donald Emerick.
Also surviving are her husband, Michael J. Swickard; two sons, Joseph Rice Jr., LaVale and Crispin M. Swickard, at home; two sisters, Crystal Emerick, LaVale, and Donna Emerick, Wellersburg.
Mrs. Swickard was a home maker and private adult home care provider. She was a former member of the LaVale Rescue Squad and she participated at Covenant House.
Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, 169 Clarence St., Hyndman, on Sunday, June 17, 2001, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 18, 2001, with the Rev. Roger A. Johnson officiating.
Interment will be in Cooks Cemetery, Wellersburg.
THE REV. JOSEPH L. MERCER
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- The Rev. Joseph L. Mercer, 57, of 2150 Martins Way, Martinsburg, died Thursday, June 14, 2001, at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Washington, D.C.
Born on July 20, 1943 at Keyser, he was the son of the late Guy Loran Mercer and Eleanor Lee (Smith) Mercer Green. He was also preceded in death by his step-father, Calvin D. Green Sr., and his father-in-law, The Rev. Leroy Imperio.
The Rev. Mercer was an ordained Bishop with the Church of God, headquartered in Cleveland, Tenn. His pastorates included the Churches of God in Paw Paw, Niles, Ohio, Peterstown, and Romney. He was also a pastor at Snyder's Bible Chapel in Hedgesville. He was a member of the Living Waters Family Worship Center, formerly known as Martinsburg Church of God. The Rev. Mercer was employed as a job trainer with the Eastern Panhandle Training Center, Martinsburg. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served from 1961 to 1964.
Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Flora Jean (Imperio) Mercer; one son, Joseph L. Mercer II and wife Tracy, Martinsburg; three daughters, Melanie Sue Mercer, Martinsburg, Laura Lynette Biser and husband James, Westernport, Md., Angela Dawn Mercer, Martinsburg; three brothers, Richard Green and wife Sandy, Keyser, Melvin Green and wife Marylee, Martinsburg, Calvin Green Jr., and wife Carla, Moorefield; two sisters, Mary Haggerty and husband Charles, Keyser, Sharon Linkswiler, Keyser; four grandchildren, Joseph Paul Mercer, Logan Patrick Mercer, Chelsea Paige Mercer, Bethany Lauren Biser, and he was eagerly awaiting the arrival of his 5th grandchild, Alyvia Ann Biser in Oct.; his mother-in-law, Maxine Imperio, Burlington; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, June 19, 2001 at 11 a.m. at the Inwood Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Dallas Waggle officiating.
Interment will be in the Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg.

JANET K. SHROUT
CUMBERLAND -- Janet Kay Shrout, 48, of 600 Wellington Lane, Cumberland, died Friday, June 15, 2001, at the Western Maryland Health System-Memorial Campus.
Born Jan. 8 1953 in Cumberland, she was the daughter of Charles Daniel "Buzz" Mathews and Ruth LaVerne (George) Mathews, Bedford Street, Cumberland.
Mrs. Shrout was Dean of Administration of Allegany College of Maryland. She was a graduate of Bishop Walsh High School, class of 1971, received her A.A. degree from Allegany Community College, a B.S. and her M.B.A. degrees from Frostburg State University. Mrs. Shrout began her career at Allegany Community College in Jan. 1976 as Supervisor of Clerical Services, promoted to Administration Secretary for Institute Research and Development and in 1983 she was promoted to Director of Institute Research and Development. In 1996, she was recognized by the Association of Higher Education's Outstanding Administrator Award. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
Besides her parents she is survived by her husband of 25 happy years, Donald G. Shrout Jr.; three sons, Timothy Ryan, Matthew Christopher and Christopher Daniel, all of Cumberland; seven brothers, Tom Mathews and wife Carolyn, Cumberland, Dave Mathews and wife Brenda, LaVale, Jerry Mathews and wife Teresa, Cumberland, John Mathews and wife Maureen, Frostburg, Marty Mathews and wife Vonda, Cumberland, Jim Mathews and wife Robin, Cumberland, Chris Mathews and wife Tracie, Cumberland; and a sister, Teresa M. Files and husband Walter "Buddy", Cresaptown. Her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Donald G. Sr. and Wanda Shrout, Cumberland; sisters-in-laws and their husbands, Diane and Dick Graham, Donna and Dave Phillips, Lorie and Craig Rummer, all of Cumberland. Janet will be sadly missed by her large and loving family as well as her happy smile and loving hugs for all nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Michael Murphy officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Janet's seven brothers and sister, Tom, Dave, Jerry, John, Marty, Jim, Chris, and Teresa Files.
