CLAUDE H. HAINES
AUGUSTA, W.Va. -- Claude Haven Haines, 86, of Augusta, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Feb. 17, 1915, in Slanesville, a son of the late Elmer Lee Haines and Leona Shillingburg Haines. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Norma Luella Moreland, 1977; one son, Dennis Anthony Haines; one sister, Maxine Haines Tarpley; three brothers, Willis Lee Haines, Poe W. Haines and Keith Haines.
Mr. Haines was a retired school teacher in Hampshire County for 35 years. He started in a one room school house heated by fire that he split on his lunch. He was a graduate of Romney High School, Class of 1933, and received his bachelors of Arts in Elementary Education from Shepherd College on Aug. 25, 1950, and a former member of Slanesville Volunteer Fire Company.
Surviving are three sons, Robert N. Haines, Edmonds, Wash., William Ronald Haven Haines, Reno, Nev., William Lee Haines of Augusta; two daughters, Pamela Jean Bank, Vienna, Va., Patricia Ann Arnette, Augusta; six grandsons, Jason Bank, Edward Arnette, Paul Haines, William Haines Jr., Issac Haines, Luke Haines; six granddaughters, Kimberly Emerson, Deanna Haines, Amby Bronner, Emily Bank, Penny Pruett, Toni Rae Crawford; and 11 great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Monday evening, 7 to 9 p.m. at the McKee Funeral Home, Augusta.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2001, at 2 p.m. in the Salem United Methodist Church, Points, with Pastor Rita Beeman and Gary Edwards officiating.
Burial will be in Salem Cemetery, Points.
Memorials may be made to Ruth Scarborough Library Fund c/o Rachel Schipper Shepherd College, Shepherdstown.
GRACELEE W. ELLIOTT
LAVALE -- Gracelee W. Elliott, 82, of LaVale, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born on Oct. 29, 1918, in Hambleton, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Clyde and Ersa (Phillips) Westfall.
Mrs. Elliott was clerk/typist for the Social Security Administration. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Surviving are her husband, Lorring H. Elliott and a foster daughter, Rosalind McAllister, Queens, N.Y.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Monday from 6 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Bishop Steven Grow officiating.
Interment will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at National Memorial Park, Falls Church, Va.

OLDTOWN -- Friends for William Edwin Leasure will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Monday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 11 a.m.
Interment will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Oldtown.
Pallbearers will be John Carder, Leo Carder, Phillip Carder, William Kinser and James Lavin.
JAMES R. BROWN
EVERETT, Pa. -- James Raymond Brown, 68, of Everett, formerly of Cumberland, Md., died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at Connemaugh Memorial Medical Center, Johnstown.
Born on Sept. 20, 1932, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late William M. and Mary Cecelia (Trapp) Brown. He was also preceded in death by two infant sons; three brothers, Joseph, William and Edward Brown; four sisters, Gertrude Cook, Clara Powers, Mary Cunningham and Ruth Crowe; and a special friend, Ruth Holman.
Mr. Brown was a U.S. Marine veteran of the Korean Conflict, a retired construction worker and of the Catholic faith.
Surviving are one sister, Virginia L. Hipsley, Short Gap, W.Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
At Mr. Brown's request, his body will be cremated at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Crematorium.
There will be no visitation.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Tuesday at 9 a.m. with the Father Milton A. Hipsley as celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
The Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, is in charge of the arrangements.

CUMBERLAND -- Friends for Frederick Adam Smith will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. James Glass officiating.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Cumberland.
MARY F. SMITH
ROMNEY, W.Va. -- Mary Freda Smith, 89, a resident of Romney since 1981, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Cumberland, Md.
Born on Aug. 2, 1912, in Lantz Ridge, she was the daughter of the late Ernest R. Knotts and Minnie C. (Baker) Knotts. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Leslie M. Smith; and four brothers.
Mrs. Smith retired on May 8, 1979, as a dietician at Hopemont State Hospital. She was a member of O.E.S. #127 of Rowlesburg, and Romney First United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Business and Professional Womens Club of Rowlesburg.
Surviving are one son, Robert W. "Bob" Smith and wife Sue, Romney; and four grandchildren, Michael Smith, Romney, Mark Smith, Myrtle Beach, S.C., Jennie Adams, Romney, and Kelli Allen and husband Walt, Berkley Springs.
Friends will be received at the Shaffer Funeral Home in Romney, Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at the funeral home on Monday, Aug. 27, 2001, at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Douglas N. Sheperd and the Rev. Calvin McCutcheon officiating.
Interment will be in Mt. Olivet cemetery in Lantz Ridge, W.Va.
CHARLES MARTIN
MOUNTAIN LAKE PARK -- Charles "Junior" Martin, 84, of Pocahontas St., Mountain Lake Park, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, at the Monongalia General Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.
Born on Jan. 23, 1917, in Red House, he was the son of the late Owen U. and Leola (Schlossnagle) Martin. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Darrell O. Martin, Guy W. Martin and Edward L. Martin; and by one sister, Ruth A. Campbell.
He attended St. John's Lutheran Church, Red House. He was a lifelong farmer, a former truck driver for Southern States Oakland Cooperative and a former school bus contractor for the Garrett County Board of Education for 14 years.
He is survived by his wife, Olive B. (Blamble) Martin; five daughters, Barbara A. Shaffer and Linda J. Coddington, both of Mountain Lake Park, Peggy L. Kitzmiller, Deer Park, Shirley J. Fletcher, Woodstock, and Sheila Y. Shaffer, Oakland; two sisters, Hazel M. Kelley, Uniontown, Pa., and Gladys E. Warnick, Cresaptown; three brothers, Kenneth R. Martin, Mountain Lake Park, Billy R. Martin, Port Orange, Fla., and Harry L. Martin, Oakland; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Stewart Funeral Home, 32 S. Second St., Oakland, Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at the funeral home on Monday, Aug. 27, 2001, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. William Connelly officiating.
Interment will be in Red House Cemetery.
